Los conocimos escuchando su primer single – ‘Kiša’ – y viendo el espectacular videoclip que grabaron para la ocasión. Automáticamente nos llamaron la atención tres cosas, su estilo personal, su nivel de calidad y su país de procedencia; la frondosa Croacia. No hace mucho pudimos conocer a otro excelente grupo también de allí – Omega Lithium – los cuales después de esta entrevista íbamos a descubrir que tenían más cosas en común de las que parecía. De todo eso y más hablamos con su batería, Andrea Kert.
Antes de empezar me gustaría agradecer vuestra atención y que por favor, os presentéis a nuestros lectores, ¿Quien son Manntra?
Manntra es un grupo formado por tres personas que decidieron hacer algo constructivo con su [in]habilidad para tocar. En orden alfabético son: Andrea, Marko y Zoltan.
Tengo mucha curiosidad, ¿Por qué ese nombre, qué significa para vosotros?
En los diccionarios ‘mantra’ viene explicado como: ‘un sonido, sílaba, palabra o grupo de palabras con la capacidad de transformar’. Pero mientras esperamos hasta que podamos transformar algo, decidimos cambiar la palabra añadiéndole una ‘n’ a mayores, y por así decirlo, indicar que aun no lo hemos conseguido… Todavía.
¿Cuando y como comenzó este proyecto?
Pues después de algún tiempo decidimos comenzar a tocar juntos, hace como algo menos de tres años. Teníamos algo de experiencia, pegándole a los cubos de la basura, rompiendo la guitarra y tratando de asfixiar a la gente con cuerdas de bajo, así que intentamos poner todo eso en marcha.
Muy pronto vamos a terminar la gira de promoción de ‘Kiša’, y después de unos cuantos festivales este verano comenzaremos la gira presentación del disco.
Ambientación industrial, muchísimo groove, estética oscura… ¿por que elegisteis este camino?
Es nuestra visión de la nueva era de la música. Directa, en toda la cara, intercalada con un toque étnico de nuestra tierra y base electrónica.
Os descubrimos viendo vuestro nuevo vídeo, ‘Kiša’. ¿Cual es la historia detrás de esta canción?, ¿qué significa?
‘Kiša’ significa ‘lluvia’ en croata. La historia habla sobre un amor prohibido, temas taboo, y también sobre el rencor que siente alguna gente todavía sobre determinadas parejas. Pero también habla sobre la estupidez y las consecuencias de los actos carnales. Pero que aún así, a pesar de todo, llega la lluvia y lo lava todo, llevándose la sangre y el veneno con ella.
¿Quien tuvo la idea de esos impresionantes efectos especiales que se incluyen en el vídeo?
El vídeo fue dirigido por nuestro buen amigo Dražen Željković, le contamos lo que queríamos conseguir y lo hizo posible. Y, como podéis comprobar, lo hizo a la perfección.
Debo reconocer que encontré el vídeo a través de un link que vi puesto en el facebook del grupo Omega Lithium, que también son de Croacia, y con un estilo muy similar al vuestro, ¿os conocéis?, ¿cual sería vuestra relación exactamente con ellos?
Ahora mismo tanto Marko (nuestro guitarra) como Zoltan (bajo) también tocan en Omega Lithium. En realidad, y a nivel creativo, Marko es el que está detrás de ambos proyectos, así que las similitudes entre los dos se trata de algo evidentemente natural.
Hablando ahora de tocar en directo, he visto que os encontráis de gira en estos momentos, ¿qué tal está saliendo?
Genial! Muy pronto vamos a terminar la gira de promoción de ‘Kiša’, y después de unos cuantos festivales este verano comenzaremos la gira presentación del disco.
[Sobre su estilo] Es nuestra visión de la nueva era de la música. Directa, en toda la cara, intercalada con un toque étnico de nuestra tierra y base electrónica.
¿Qué me puedes contar del setlist? ¿qué canción dirías que está causando más estragos entre el público?, ¿hay alguna favorita…?
Es un cliché, pero para nosotros realmente todas son nuestras favoritas. La respuesta de la gente es muy buena, se pueden sentir identificados con varias canciones, así que no podría señalar ninguna en particular.
¿Cuando podremos escuchar más canciones nuevas? Algún plan para los próximos meses…
Pues justo acabamos de sacar una nueva que se llama ‘Gorki San’ (‘Bitter Dream’), que podéis escuchar aquí. Y mientras tanto estamos preparando el disco, que esperamos tener listo para otoño.

We first met through their first single – ‘Kiša‘ – and watching the awesome clip that was released with it. Instantly, we were shocked by their personal style, refined skills, and their croatian roots. A few weeks before, we also found another croatian band – Omega Lithium – and, after this interview, we’ll gonna see that both of them have a lot of things in common. They are the new industrial-gothic revolution from Croatia.
Before we start, thank you for your attention and on your own words, please introduce yourself to our readers. Who are Manntra?
Manntra is a band, made by 3 people who decided to something constructive out of their (in)ability to play instruments. They are, in alfabetic order, Andrea, Marko and Zoltan
I feel curious. Why this name? What it means for you?
In dictionaries, word ‘mantra’ is explained as ‘a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that is considered capable of ‘creating transformation’ ‘ – But, since we can only hope to transform anything, we decided to change the word by adding an extra ‘n’, thus signalizing we’re not quite there… yet.
When and how start this project?
Well, we finally decided to start playing together little less than year ago. We had some musical expirience (banging on the thrash cans, kicking the guitars and trying to smother people with bass strings) so we tried to put all that to work.
We’re soon finishing the ‘Kiša’ promo tour, and after couple of festivals this summer, we’re embarking on the promo tour for the album release.
Industrial landscapes, very powerful groove, dark aesthetics… why did you choose this path?
Well, it’s our vision of the new era of the music. Direct, in-your-face music, intertwined with etno music from our lands and electronic background.
We discovered your work watching your new video, ‘Kiša’. What it means?, What’s the story behind this song?
‘Kiša’ means ‘rain’ on croatian. The story describes the forbidden love, taboo themes, and grudges some people still hold against the young lovers. But it also speaks about mindlessness and consequences of carnal acts. But still, rain always comes, and washes the blood and venom away.
Who had the idea for the awesome visuals featured on the clip?
The video was directed by our good friend Dražen Željković, and we described what we wanted to him, and he delivered. And, as you can see, he delivered it perfectly.
I recognize that I found this video following a link posted from Omega Lithium on their facebook, another croatian metal band which features similar style to yours… Do you know them? What’s your relationship with them?
Actually, both Marko (guitars) and Zoltan (bass) also play in Omega Lithium, while Marko is the mastermind and main creative force behind the both projects, so it’s only natural there are some similarities.
Talking about live performance. I saw that you are actually on tour. How it is going on?
It’s great! We’re soon finishing the ‘Kiša’ promo tour, and after couple of festivals this summer, we’re embarking on the promo tour for the album release.

What about the set list? What song did you say that can blow out the listeners?, is there any favourite on stage?
It’s a cliche, but we really favour all of our songs. And the audience feedback is great; they can find theirselves in various songs, so we can’t single out any in particular.
When we will hear more songs from Manntra? Any plans for the future….
Well, we recently released new song called ‘Gorki San’ (Bitter Dream) and you can listen to it here. In the meantime, we’re preparing the album, which should be released in autumn.
