Les conocimos hace más o menos un año gracias al espectacular vídeo que grabaron de su ‘Madman‘ para promocionar el primer LP del grupo. A partir de entonces no quisimos perderles la pista, y ahora mismo tuvimos la suerte de pillarles entre su paso por el Hellfest francés y sus próximas fechas en España con Ministry.
Para hablar de estos conciertos tan destacados, así como algunos detalles curiosos sobre el núcleo del grupo, nos pusimos directamente en contacto con su poderosa vocalista, Agnete Kjølsrud.
Antes de empezar me gustaría agradecer la oportunidad de hablar contigo, además precisamente en medio de un momento tan ocupado para vosotros. Gracias de verdad, pero comenzando ya con las preguntas, cuéntanos, ¿quienes son Djerv en vuestras propias palabras?
Nada por favor, faltaría más. Djerv somos Erlend Gjerde a la batería, Stian Kårstad a la guitarra y yo, Agnete Kjølsrud a la voz. Somos un grupo noruego de hard rock.
Tras haber sacado el EP ‘Headstone’, ahora mismo estáis promocionando vuestro primer LP, que por otra parte está obteniendo muy buenas críticas por todo el mundo. ¿Qué significa para vosotros mismos ese recibimiento tan bueno?
Pues la verdad es que ha sido muy abrumador. Es algo que me hace sentir humilde y orgullosa al mismo tiempo. Lo bueno es que nos están llegando tanto de un público rockero como metalero. Estamos muy contentos con eso, y es también muy satisfactorio cuando realmente ves que los críticos pillan nuestra música, nuestras intenciones y nuestro propósito elogiando las canciones y el disco. Solo puedo decir “gracias!”.

Particularmente creo que sonáis de una forma única y remarcabe. Recuerdo quedarme impresionado viendo el vídeo de ‘Madman’. La afinación y distorsión de las guitarras, tu potente voz, o la intensidad de la batería… ¿Qué me podrías contar tú misma del disco?, ¿como fue también trabajar con Daniel y Matt en el estudio?
¡Gracias por el comentario! Bueno, estuvimos tres semanas en Oslo y una en Los Angeles. Nos trajimos desde Suecia para Oslo a Daniel Bergstrand y trabajamos muuuchos días. De hecho Stian tuvo que trabajar por las noches, porque al poco de empezar con todo nos dimos cuenta que tres semanas eran algo justas. Después Erlend y yo nos fuimos a los estudios Hyde de Matt en Los Angeles para trabajar allí en la mezcla. Habría mucho que contar sobre este disco. Intentamos que fuera intenso, melódico, movido y con influencia black metalera. Es oscuro y puede que incluso un poco terrorífico. Para nosotros el sonido quedó perfecto, y también creo que la gente con la que contamos hizo un trabajo increíble. Nos involucramos mucho en el trabajo de estudio, y también creo que nadie conoce nuestra música mejor que nosotros. Solo puedo añadir que la cooperación entre todos fue realmente bien.
Por lo que me estás contando imagino que tuvo que ser agotador, y a nivel de acabado, ¿qué dirías que le han aportado al grupo ellos como técnicos?
Teníamos una idea muy clara de como debería sonar el disco. Queríamos que sonase rockero, pero también nos gustaba que tuviera algo de frialdad y oscuridad, más que nada por por el detalle de nuestro país de procedencia. Fuimos trabajando sobre la marcha con ese criterio. Tanto Erlend como yo ya habíamos trabajado con Bergstrand y conocíamos su habilidad. La verdad es que nos entendemos muy bien para trabajar juntos. La razón por la que les elegimos y contactamos con ellos fue porque tienen muchísima experiencia y destreza en lo suyo. Con todo, uno tampoco debe perder nunca la visión y concepto que tenga de su proyecto. Nadie conoce Djerv mejor que Djerv.

Estáis en plena gira por Europa, y ahora mismo os pillamos en el marco de un festival gigantesco como Hellfest. ¿Qué expectativas tenéis para ese fin de semana?
Pues ahora mismo nos estamos preparando para ese directo, y estamos muy emocionados. Vamos a hacer todo lo posible para que sea un gran concierto, para nuestros seguidores y bueno – en realidad – todo el mundo. Se que voy a estar un poco nerviosa, pero después de tocar [espero que, un concierto cojonudo] nos encontraremos con nuestro colega Victor Brandt de Entombed, saldremos por ahí, beberemos unas cervezas y veremos al resto de grupos. Victor tocó el bajo con nosotros hace un año y medio, y la verdad es que me apetece mucho volver a verle. Creo que esa noche va a ser genial, pero solo si estamos al máximo en el escenario!
Sabemos que nos visitaréis el mes que viene [Julio] con un grupo tan importante además como Ministry. ¿Cómo os sentís sobre este concierto?, ¿qué podemos encontrarnos con vosotros dos juntos en directo?
Pues no estoy muy segura. Nunca he visto a Ministry en directo, pero creo que los dos grupos hacemos una buena mezcla. Nosotros por lo menos nos entregaremos al máximo como en cada uno de nuestros conciertos; tocando con la máxima energía, headbangueando, pogueando y por supuesto repartiendo nuestra música de la mejor forma posible. Somos un grupo que te empuja a moverte, sólido y contundente, y eso es lo que aspiramos ser todas las noches. Aunque tampoco puedes dejar de lado algo de diversión entre toda esa locura, así que supongo que al mismo tiempo también puedrás sentir algo de buen rollo. Creo que un concierto nuestro es de lo más divertido que te puede pasar en la vida.
Pues estoy de acuerdo, y creo que ambos vais a dar un concierto excelente….

¿Y algo sobre el setlist?, ¿qué canción dirías que hace estallar más al público?, ¿tenéis vosotros alguna favorita?
Cada uno tenemos nuestras propias favoritas, pero creo que empezamos con las que más molan de todas. Aunque al mismo tiempo el final es también genial y muy enérgico.

Pero cambiando de paisaje, ¿qué me puedes contar de vosotros fuera del escenario?, ¿qué dirías que le aporta la personalidad de cada uno al grupo?
¿Realmente quieres que te diga que si me cabreas te arrancaré la nariz de un mordisco, te la escupiré, y me escojonaré justo después? (se ríe por lo bajo). Bueno, todo depende de como sea la historia ¿no?. Los chicos son los mejores, y nos llevamos realmente bien. Cada uno sabemos cosas distintas y nos caemos bien, y creo que eso es un buen pre-requisito para tocar juntos en un grupo. Es bastante complicado decirte como es nuestra personalidad, lo cierto es que somos muy distintos unos de otros, y también muy diferentes en persona que en directo.
¿Donde crees que sería el mejor lugar entonces para veros? ¿Festival, sala…?
Creo que podemos funcionar en los dos sitios, pero siempre es divertido estar cerca del público y sentir su energía en la cara. Lo más importante es conseguir algo de magia entre los dos. Quizá sea más sencillo conseguirla en locales más pequeños, pero claro también molan los escenarios grandes. Más parque [para jugar] por así decirlo.
¿Quien está detrás del diseño y la estética del grupo? Creo que son fantásticos…
¡Muchas gracias! Hemos contado con varias personas, para el disco tuvimos a Martin Kvamme (Mike Patton etc). Para los vídeos y las fotografías encontramos a un gran amigo en Jørn Veberg. Pero tanto para esto como para grabar el disco, siempre hemos tenido una idea clara de lo que queríamos. Fue muy importante la buena comunicación que tuvimos con todo el mundo. Igual suena como si fuésemos unos revienta-pelotas, y siempre quisiéramos todo a NUESTRA manera… pero bueno, ese no es el caso.
¿Cuando podremos escuchar canciones nuevas? Algún plan para los próximos meses….
Hemos empezado a componer canciones nuevas, y si todo va bien podremos tener algo para principios del 2012. PERO ahora estamos hasta arriba con la gira y todo eso, así que puede que se retrase todo un poco. Estamos haciendo planes constantemente.

We met them about a year ago when they released their ‘Madman‘ video to promote the band’s first LP. From these point we were following their moves, and we were lucky to talk to them between their Hellfest’s performance and their current tour headlining with Ministry.
We contacted directly with their powerful vocalist, Agnete Kjølsrud, to talk about some personal details of the band, and also about this important dates.
Before we start, thank you for your attention and on your own words, please introduce yourself to our readers. Who are Djerv?
You are very welcome. Djerv is Erlend Gjerde on drums, Stian Kårstad on guitar and me, Agnete Kjølsrud on vocals. We are a norvegian hard rock band.
Right now, and after the release of ‘Headstone’, you are promoting your first LP, that is getting very high scores all over the world. What does it means to you guys receive this kind words?
It has really been overwelming. I feel humble and proud at the same time. The cool thing is that we get this from both rock people and the metal people. We are so happy about this and it is also very satisfying when you can really see that the reviewer understand our music, our intentions and our thoughts regarding the songs and the album. I have to say “thank you!”.

I think it sounds unique and remarkable. I remember feeling myself amazed watching the ‘Madman’ video. The particular guitar tuning, your powerful vocals and intense drums… But, what can you tell me about the whole album? How it was the recording process with Daniel and Matt?
Thank you for kind words! Well, we were 3 weeks in Oslo and 1 week in LA. We had Swedich Daniel Bergstrand to come to Oslo and we worked looong days. Actually Stian had to work nights cause we could see pretty early in the prosess that three weeks was a bit tight. Then Erlend and I went to LA to Matt Hyde’s studio and worked on the mix there. There is a lot to say about this album. We have tried to make a groovy, intence and melodic album with black metal influences. It is dark and maybe a bit creepy. We think the sound is perfect for Djerv, and we think the people we choose to work with, did a really great job with us. We are very hands on, so we might be much in studio, but we know that nobody knows the music better than we do. The cooperation went very well, I must say.
Uff, must have been and exhausting work…. but, what do you think they bring to Djerv as technicians?
We had a good idea of how the Djerv album was going to sound. We wantet it to be a rock’n roll sound, but we wanted to add some coldness and darkness, in terms of the country we are from. It was an ungoing process and we had a vision. Both me and Erlend had worked with Bergstrand ealier and new his qualitys allready. Me and him had f eksemple a really good way of working together.
Let’s say there is a reason why we contacted these guys and wanted to work with them. They have a lot of experience and possess a lot of special skills. However, one should not forget his own vision and own thoughts about one’s project. No one knows Djerv better than Djerv.
At this moment you are touring Europe, and right now, we are talking a few days before your show at Clisson’s huge Hellfest. What do you expect about this important date?
We are preparing the show these days, and we are very excited! We will do our very best to make this a great show for our audience and to be honest with you, I know I will get a bit nervous. But after playing (hopefully a kick-ass show), we will meet our friend Victor Brandt from Entombed, hang out, drink beer and watch other bands. Victor played the bass in Djerv 1,5 years ago and I am really really looking forward seeing him. I think this night will rock, but it only will if we do our best on stage!

We know that you are gonna visit Spain next month [July] with such an important band like Ministry… How do you feel about it? What can we expect from both of you performing together?
I don’t know really. I have never seen Ministry live, but I think the two bands go really well together music-wise. Djerv will at least do our very best every single night performing with raw energy, head-banging, stage-diving and of course the best delivery of our music. We are a tight, hard-hitting and groovy band and that is what we will aim to be every night. But you should never forget to have fun in all the madness, so I guess you also can sense a good vibe in the audience as well. I think being on stage with Djerv is the most fun and rewarding thing life can offer!
I think that both of you will do a great performance live…

What about the set list? What song did you say that can blow out the listeners?, is there any favourite on stage?
We all have different favorites, but I think we start with the coolest songs of them all. Also I think the end is awsome and really energetic.

How are you outside the stage? What do you think that brings [related to your personality] the three of you to the band?
Don’t you want me to say that I am really mean outside stage, and if you piss me off I will bite off your nose, spit it out and laugh the next moment? He he he. Well. It all depends on who we deal with, does’nt it? The guys are the best and we go really great together. We posess different knowledge and we like each other and that is a good prerequisite for playing in a band together. It is pretty difficult to tell how our personalities are, but let’s say we are very different from each other and also very different from what we are on stage.
Where do you think that will be the best place to see Djerv? Open Air fest or smaller auditorium?
I think we can do both stages, but it is allways fun to be close to the audience and feel their energy right in your face. The important thing is to get the magic moment for both us and the crowd. I guess this is easier on small stages, all though I think the bigger stages is cool aswell. Bigger playground, so to speak.
Who are behind all the artwork/aesthetics in the band? I think it looks awesome…
Thank you very much! We have used different people, but for the album, we used Martin Kvamme (Mike Patton etc). For the videos and pictures, we have found a great friend in Jørn Veberg. But it is here as in making the record; Djerv has always an idea of what we want. Therefor it is very important that we have a good dialog with the people we work with. It sound like we are a pain in the ass, and allways want it OUR way… well, that is not really the case, I hope We know their qualitys and know what they can. We are just hands on.
When we will hear more songs from Djerv? Any plans for the future….
We have started to make new songs now, and hopefully we will get something out the beguinning of 2013. BUT we are very occupied with touring and stuff, so it might be a bit later. We make plans every day.
