Veteranos de la escena underground sueca, Mama Kin nos sorprendieron el año pasado con un disco de debut de altura, con reminiscencias a KISS y estribillos que no puedes quitarte de la cabeza. Durante la preparación de su segundo disco, su cantante, Ward, nos hizo un hueco para adentrarnos en su mundo de hard rock sofisticado y comentarnos sus impresiones de su gira española.
Nacisteis en 2001, como una reacción de rabia a la música que se estaba pinchando en la radio. Diez años después, ¿pensáis que ha mejorado la programación?
La radio y la television están peor que nunca. Ahora hay un montón de reality shows como Teen Mon y Sweet 16. Sin embargo, hay un montón de gente más dedicándose a lo suyo para mejorar las cosas, como festivales, clubs, periódicos, etc.
Tomásteis prestado vuestro nombre de una canción de Aerosmith ‘Mama Kin’. ¿Qué representa esta canción para vosotros?
No representa tanto como pensarías. Escuchábamos esa canción cuando decidimos montar la banda y cuando tuvimos que pensar un nombre queríamos uno de tres sílabas para que fuera fácil de gritar: MA-MA KIN, MA-MA KIN. Todavía no tenemos ni idea de lo que significa.
Sonáis como unos KISS modernos. ¿Cuál es la mayor inspiración de esta banda? ¿Cuáles son los elementos claves de vuestro estilo, vuestra marca de fábrica?
Yo diría que la mayor inspiración de KISS para todos nosotros es Paul Stanley. La forma en la que canta y compone las melodías, en que toca la guitarra y en que escribe canciones. Él es con diferencia la mayor fuerza dentro de KISS. Creo que la gente que nos escucha podría responder a la segunda pregunta, es difícil hablar de tu propia música de esa manera. Creo que nuestra música es bastante grandilocuente.
El año pasado publicásteis vuestro debut ‘In The City’. ¿Cuáles son las canciones de las que estáis más orgullosos y por qué?
Nuestra preferida es Too Much porque es muy sólida de principio a fin y tiene bonitas armonías y melodías. Los riffs son maravillosos y el sentimiento general de la canción es como oscuro, lo que me encanta.
Grabásteis dos vídeos ‘In The City’ y ‘Superman’. ¿Qué es lo básico en vuestros vídeos, qué espíritu pervive?
¡No tengo ni idea! Quizá una especie de sentimiento de oscuro destino…
Uno de vuestros temas se llama ‘Champagne, Chicks&Rock’N’Roll’. ¿Encaja con vosotros mejor esta ecuación que el clásico Sex&Drugs&Rock’N’Roll?
No, pero hubiera sido cutre usar esa frase ya que se ha usado tantas veces antes… De hecho esta es la primera canción que escribimos como MAMA KIN, y la mantuvimos así sólo por diversión. Puedes percatarte cuando la escuchas de que es bastante diferente al resto de canciones.
En la portada del disco os encontramos dentro de una piscina –algo muy típico en los primeros 80-. ¿De dónde tomásteis la idea y qué quisisteis expresar con el diseño?
Queríamos algo que fuera divertido de mirar. El rock era más divertido en los 70 y en los 80. Las bandas de rock ahora suelen situarse frente a un fondo con un graffiti en alguna parte y tratar de parecer duros. Queríamos más lujo y alquilamos una suite con ventanas panorámicas para la sesión. La gente insiste en que tomamos la idea de la sesión de Motley Crue, pero se equivocan, ¡ellos están en un puto baño de espuma, no en una piscina sobre la ciudad!
Vuestro lp fue publicado en Estados Unisdos y girasteis allí con Asphalt Valentine. ¿Qué tal fue la experiencia?
¡Una gran aventura, muy guay! Nos hicimos buenos amigos y tuvimos algún que otro momento salvaje. Con un poco de suerte podremos conseguir que vengan y giren en Europa con nosotros. ¿Quizá por España?
Girasteis por España. ¿Qué recordáis de esa gira y del feedback de la audiencia? ¿Cuándo vais a regresar?
España fue una pasada y toda la gente que conocimos fueron muy guays y muy agradables con nosotros. Gran comida, grandes fiestas, y gente muy maja. ¡Decididamente vamos a volver cuanto antes para una gira más larga!
Comentaste que estáis preparando vuestro segundo álbum. ¿Qué diferencias vamos a encontrar con respecto al primero? ¿Cuándo va a publicarse?
Todavía no tenemos fecha de publicación. Queremos tomarnos nuestro tiempo con este álbum porque es importante crear una continuación mejor que la anterior. La mayor diferencia probablemente sea que va a ser más sólido y va a mantenerse determinada atmósfera a lo largo de todos los temas.
En una entrevista comentabas que la mayoría de las canciones de la banda son sobre las cosas que más os gustan, como las chicas. ¿Qué mensaje enviaríais a las lectoras femeninas de La Estadea?
Seguid escuchando a MAMA KIN, corred la voz y con un poco de suerte nos veremos cuando volvamos a España.

Veterans of the Swedish underground scene, Mama Kin surprised us last year with an awesome debut album, which brang KISS to mind and had catchy choruses you can’t get rid of. In the meantime of the writing of their second album, their singer, Ward, made room for La Estadea for getting us deep into their world of sophisticated hard rock and telling about their feelings in their Spanish tour.
You started the band in 2001, as a reaction of rage to the music that was being played on the radio at the time. Ten years later, do you think it has improved?
Radio and TV is crappier than ever. MTV is hardly showing any music videos anymore. Now it’s Teen Mom, Sweet 16 and loads of other reality shows. There are, however, a lot more people doing their own thing to make things better, like festivals, clubs, newspapers etc.
You are named after an Aerosmith’s song ‘Mama Kin’. What does this song mean to you?
Not as much as you would think. We listened to the song when we decided to start the band and when it was time to think of a name we wanted three syllables so that our name would be easy to shout. MA-MA KIN, MA-MA KIN. We still have no idea what it means…
You sound like some modern KISS. What’s the greatest inspiration from this band? Which are the key elements of your style, your trade mark?
I’d say the biggest inspiration with KISS for all of us is Paul Stanley. The way he sings and does melodies, plays guitar and write songs. He is by far the biggest force in KISS. I think people who listens to us could answer that question better, it’s hard to talk about your own music in that way. I think our music is pretty bombastic.
Last year you released your debut ‘In The City’. Which are the songs you are most proud of and why?
Our personal favourite on that album is Too Much cause it’s such a solid song from the beginning to the end with awesome harmonies and melodies. The riffs are awesome and the general feeling of the song is kind of dark which I like.
You recorded two videos ‘In The City’ and ‘Superman’. What’s the basic that any of your videos share, the spirit?
I have no idea! Maybe a dark destiny kind of feeling…
One of your songs it’s called Champagne, Chicks&Rock’N’Roll. Does that equation fit better for you than the classic Sex&Drugs&Rock’N’Roll?
No, but it would have been cheesy to use that line since it has been used so many times before.. That was actually the first song we ever wrote in MAMA KIN, and we kept it the same way on the album just for fun. You can hear when you listen to it that it’s a bit different from the rest of the songs.
In the cover of the album we find you inside a pool, -very typical in the early 80s-. Where did the idea come from and what did you want to express with the artwork?
We wanted something that would be fun to look at. Rock was more fun back in the 70’s and 80’s. Rock bands now usually stand in front of a graffitti wall somewhere and try to look tough. We wanted more luxury and rented a suite with panorama windows for the shoot. People insist that we got the idea from a Motley Crüe shoot but, that’s all wrong – they’re in a fucking bubble bath, not a pool overlooking the city!
Your album was released in USA and you were touring there with Asphalt Valentine. How was the experience like?
An awesome adventure and a very cool experience! We became good friends and we had some wild times over there. Hopefully we can get them to come over here and tour europe with us. Maybe Spain?
You toured Spain. Which are your memories of that tour and the feedback of the audience? When are you coming back?
Spain was a blast and everybody we met were so cool and nice to us. Good food, great parties and awesome people. We’re definitely coming back as soon as possible for a longer tour!
You commented you are preparing your second album. Which differences are we going to find with your debut? When it’s going to be released?
We have no release date yet. We want to take our time with this album cause it’s important to make the follow up better than the first one. The biggest difference is probably gonna be that it’s going to be more solid and more of a certain feeling throughout the entire album.
In an interview you told that the songs of the band are about the things you enjoy the most, as girls. Which message would you send to the female readers of La Estadea?
