De la mano de Krea Film y de Vicalvarock nos llegó la primera edición del Rockfest, un festival de AOR y de rock melódico celebrado en Madrid. Desde La Estadea cubrimos el día fuerte, con Houston y Reckless Love. Y es de agradecer que en los tiempos que corren y tratándose de una nueva iniciativa la gente acudiera en masa.
Comenzamos la tarde con los británicos Serpentine, que presentaron los temas de su debut, ‘A Touch Of Heaven’, y algún tema del reciente. Sonaron bien, pero hay una gran diferencia vocal entre Tony Mills y Matt Black: el primero es aguardentoso mientras que el segundo suena a algodón de azúcar; el primero tiene una presencia en el escenario, mientras que el segundo es un tanto frío. Considerando el estilo musical de la banda, las monerías del bajista distraían bastante y no venían mucho a cuento. Con un par de reajustes podrían ganar mucho.
A las 18h comenzó Rafa Martín, el otro artista español de la jornada –junto a Airless-, y arrancó con una fuerza que no le abandonó en todo el concierto. Independientemente de que conocieras su discografía o no, llegó a lo más hondo con su rock sincero y cargado de sentimiento, como el que se hacía en la España de los 80. Y con toneladas de calidad.
A los británicos Vega les costó tres canciones entrar en calor y fue cuando endurecieron las guitarras y tendieron al hard rock cuando empezaron a destacar. La complicidad entre los músicos fue buena, -sobre todo entre el cantante y el bajista-, también lo fue el feedback con el público, pero la voz de Nick Workman en directo no da para más: sonó baja y con poca fuerza. Entre canciones monótonas vinieron las grandes: ‘Kiss Of Life’, ‘Into The Wild’, y ‘One Of A Kind’.
Houston fueron para mí la sorpresa de la noche. La audiencia no se equivocó al votarles para que participaran en este festival, porque rompieron. Es un grupo con buena imagen, con buen sonido, y con una calidez interpretativa que engancha desde que salta a escena. Lástima su tendencia a descuidar los coros- como nos recuerda nuestro redactor Txapito- y de dejarle a Hank todo el peso vocal, aunque él no necesitó ninguna ayuda para salvar el concierto. Sus canciones pueden volverse tan clásicas como las de los mitos de los 80. Yo no los perdería de vista.

Si Houston fueron la sorpresa, para mí Reckless Love fueron la decepción, pese a que me esperaba un concierto peor. Tocaron bien, Olliver Herman sacó a relucir todas sus triquiñuelas a lo David Lee Roth e interaccionó perfectamente con el público, pero fue la voz la que no funcionó, como si careciera de control sobre ella. Cabe decir que ha mejorado desde su estancia en Crashdiet, que no soltó ningún gallo, pero fue como si cantara a trozos, sin nexo de unión entre las líneas y cuando le parecía, se ponía a gritar. Obviamente, un grupo cabeza de cartel no puede permitirse eso, y menos encabezando un festival. Porque voz, tiene.
Fueron 16 temas, con dos jams: una del guitarrista Pepe, antes de ‘Back To Paradise’, y una del batería Hessu después de ‘Wild Touch’. Se prodigaron más con el segundo álbum que con el primero y se dejaron fuera dos efectivos temas como ‘Love Machine’ y ‘So Yeah’. Incluso anunciaron cuál sería el tercer single –’Sex On The Radio’-, del que ya están grabando su vídeo.
En definitiva, podría decirse que quedó claro que el Rockfest es un festival que merece una segunda entrega, con bandas más fuertes el viernes.

From the joining forcers of promoters Krea Film and Vicalvarock came first edition of Rockfest, an AOR and melodic rock festival, celebrated in Madrid. La Estadea covered the most important day, with Houston and Reckless Love. And it’s thankful considering the rough times we are going through that the ticket selling was good.
We started the afternoon with the British Serpentine, who introduced their debut album, A Touch Of Heaven, and some tracks of their just released second one. They played well, but there’s a world of difference as frontman between Tony Mills and Matt Black: the vocals of the first sound like whisky and the seconds, like candy floss; first has a presence on stage, but the second it’s quite cold yet. Considering their musical style, the poses of the bassist were out of place and were a distraction. With some changes they could improve lots.
At 18h came Rafa Martín, the other Spanish artist of the day –with Airless-, and kickstarted with a speed that didn’t lowered down in the full concert. Not considering if you knew his discography or not, he got into deep with his sincere and all feeling rock, like the one of Spain in the 80s. And he gives the value for money.
To the British Vega took them three songs to warm up and it was when they went harder that they revived. The vibe between musicians was good –mostly between the singer and the bassist- the feedback with the audience was good, but the voice of Nick Workman, live, can’t go much further: it sounded low and weak. Between monotonous songs came highlights like: ‘Kiss Of Life’, ‘Into The Wild’, and ‘One Of A Kind’.
Houston were for me the big surprise. Audience didn’t make a mistake when they voted them to be in this festival, because they rocked. It’s a band with a good image, a good sound, and a vocal warmness that catches you since they jump on stage. It’s a pity their tendency to neglect the chorus –as our staff writer Txapito remarks- and to leave Hank all the vocal work. However, he didn’t need any help to bring the concert ahead. Their songs can become as classic as the ones of the myths of 80s. I wouldn’t keep my eyes out of them.
If Houston were a big surprise, for me Reckless Love was the big disappointment, though I was expecting something worse. They played well, Olliver Herman used every of his David Lee Roth tricks and worked effectively on the feedback, but it was vocals that didn’t work, as if he couldn’t handle them. It’s necessary to remind that he has improved since his Spanish tour with Crashdiet, didn’t came out of tune, but he seemed to sing as he spoke, without a link, and when felt like to, he started to scream. Obviously, a headliner can’t allow themselves to do that and in the less being on the head of a festival. Because he has the vocal skills.
It was 16 songs, with two jams: one of the guitarist Pepe, before ‘Back To Paradise’, and one of drummer Hessu after ‘Wild Touch’. They spent more time with the second album than with the first and let out two rocking songs as ‘Love Machine’ and ‘So Yeah’. Even they announced third single –’On The Radio’-, from which they are recording the video.
In short, it could be said that Rockfest it’s a festival that it’s woth a second edition, with bigger bands on Friday.
