Si os preguntabais hasta dónde puede llegar La Estadea por cubrir una información, os encantará leer esto. No sólo somos adictos a los británicos Summers por su música, si no por sus entretenidos blogs, en los que relatan sus aventuras y desventuras en la noche británica. Esta vez se colaron en una de las giras más deseadas del año y nos contaron cómo la vivieron ellos como espectadores, así como los líos en los que se metieron y lo que hacían mientras tanto.
De acuerdo, vamos a empezar con la nota correcta: Steel Panther + Mötley Crüe + Def Leppard = un montón de tías buenas bajo un mismo techo. Rubias, morenas, pelirrojas, tatuadas… Bueno, Crash era en lo que más se estaba concentrando. Era como un niño en una tienda de caramelos. Tres bandas icónicas y se pasa el tiempo mirando en sentido opuesto al escenario, canturreando con una sonrisilla en su cara. Jase se fijaba en todo el equipo, qué guitarras se estaban usando para arrancar esos lengüetazos sudorosos, mientras escribía su carta para Santa Claus. Y luego Ricky se dedicaba simplemente a mirar a las bonitas luces y a la pirotecnia y a decir ‘guau’…
En fin, vamos a hablar del espectáculo, que ese es el motivo por el que estás leyendo esta crónica. Para nosotros esta tenía que ser una de las mejores alineaciones para una gira de rock.
Steel Panther abrieron con su habitual show excéntrico y sus payasadas combinando todas las virtudes de los 80 (con un poco de humor juguetón). O los amas o los odias y nosotros los AMAMOS. Si eres un fan del hair metal y no los has visto o no has oído hablar de ellos con anterioridad, asegúrate de que les echas un vistazo. Sus letras te harán partirte el culo pero su calidad como músicos te dejará con la boca abierta de par en par. Tocaron canciones de sus dos álbumes, entre ellas, nuestra preferida, ‘Community Property’. Esta canción realmente llegó a la gente. Salieron a las 18:30 y tocaron durante 40 minutos ante un Wembley Arena medio vacío, por lo que me dió pena por estos chicos. Sin embargo, la gente que estuvo presente no se sintió decepcionada. Cuando después del concierto hablamos con algunos de ellos, la mayoría les consideró la mejor banda de la noche.
Después de Panthers nos salió la oportunidad de tomar una cerveza con unos amigos (hubiera sido grosero no hacerlo) y literalmente acabábamos de volver del bar cuando un estruendo enorme hace que el estadio se quede muerto. ¡Fijaos si sería alto que a Andy se le derramó la cerveza y Crash dejó de mirar a las chicas de la fila z! Su utilidad era marcar el comienzo de la actuación de Motley. Estos tíos saben cómo captar la atención de la gente. Arrancaron con ‘Wild Side’ –del disco ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’-. Tan pronto como las luces iluminaron el estadio no podías evitar fijarte en la enorme montaña rusa sobre la batería de Tommy Lee y la palabra SIN (pecado) escrita en luces de neón. ¡Era demencial! Abundaron los fuegos artificiales, las llamas y las explosiones. Para entonces la sala estaba a rebosar y todos enloquecían por ellos.

Por desgracia, tuvieron unos cuantos y evidentes problemas técnicos durante algunas canciones, lo que no les detuvo de desembuchar sus éxitos. Y cuando tienes canciones como ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’ y ‘Kick Start My Heart’, tienes garantizado que la gente se va a poner por las nubes. Tommy Lee, con su larguísimo solo de batería, dio el mejor momento. Nadie se hubiera atrevido a irse al baño o irse al bar y arriesgarse a perderse esa vista tan espectacular. El elevador de la batería de Tommy estaba sujeto a un elemento de 360 grados que recordaba al famoso London Eye. Empezó yendo de lado a lado para acabar boca abajo. Échale un vistazo en You Tube, si todavía no lo has visto. Fue maravilloso ver a la banda en persona, pero lo único malo para nosotros fue que sólo tocaron hora y cuarto y sólo 13 canciones. Idealmente nos hubiera encantado escuchar más ya que estos chicos no visitan mucho Reino Unido.
Después de Motley, no cabía duda de que todos pensaban ‘¿cómo van a superar eso Def Leppard?’. Y lo que hizo la banda fue valerse de la sencillez. No usaron toda su pirotecnia. Usaron su extensivo catálogo de hits y dejaron que la música hablara por ellos. Tuvieron clase y se valieron de enormes pantallas de vídeo en las que proyectaban imágenes de la banda desde sus inicios hasta el presente. Tuvieron una iluminación estratégica y 3 diferentes escalones al escenario que cubrían todo el rato. Clavaron cada armonía tal y como fue originalmente grabada y colocaron las canciones en un orden que les permitió tener a la audiencia rendida a sus pies. Estuvo muy bien escuchar temas que no habían tocado antes, como ‘Undefeated’ –de su último álbum, ‘Mirrorball’-. Con honestidad, puedo decir que podían haber tocado durante otra hora y media con todas las canciones que no habían metido en el set list. ¡La muchedumbre estaba anonadada por la legendaria banda de rock!

Mientras estábamos en el kebab después del concierto, Summers tuvimos una discusión de borrachos. De hecho, fue más bien fue una pelea a gritos porque apenas podíamos oír mucho después de 4 horas de sólida música rock, pero decidimos al unísono que el paquete de las tres bandas había funcionado muy bien y aportaba algo para todos. Fue una gran noche de fiesta (especialmente para Andy al que sólo se le permite salir de su jaula para las galas y para ocasiones especiales).

If you were wondering how far La Estadea can go for covering information, you’ll enjoy reading this. We are not only addicted to the British Summers because of their music, but by their amusing blogs in which they tell their adventures and misfortunes in the British night. This time they gatecrashed in one of the most awaited tours of the year and told us how they lived it as spectators, as well as the mess they got into and what they where doing in the meanwhile.
OK, let’s start this off on the right note: Steel Panther + Mötley Crüe + Def Leppard = a lot of hot chicks under one roof. There were blondes, brunettes, red heads, chicks with tattoos… well this is what Crash was mostly concentrating on. It was like looking at a kid in a candy store. Three iconic bands and he spends his time looking in the opposite direction to the stage, singing along with a giant grin on his face. Jase is checking out all of the equipment, what guitars are being used to rip out those sweat licks, while writing his list for Santa. Then we have Ricky who is just looking looking at the pretty lights and pyrotechnics and going ‘wooo…’
Anyway! On to the actual show which is why you’re actually reading this article. In our eyes this has to be one of the best line-ups for a Rock tour in a long time. Steel Panther opened the show with their usual eccentric stage show and antics combining all the qualities of the 80’s rock era (will a little playful humour). Now you either love or hate these guys and we LOVE them. If you are a hair metal fan and have not seen or heard of them before then be sure to check them out. Their lyrics will have you in stitches but the musicianship will have you watching with your mouth wide open. They played songs from both albums to date and our personal favourite, ‘Community Property’. This track really got the crowd going.
They came on at 18:30 and performed a 40 minute set to a half empty Wembley arena so we felt for these guys. However the crowd that did manage to catch their show were NOT disappointed. When we spoke to a few people after the show, Panther were rated the best band of the night by most.
After Panthers set we went for a cheeky beer (it would be rude not too) and we had literally just got back from the bar when a HUGE bangbrings the arena to a standstill. Seriously this was loud enough for Andy to spill his pint and for Crash to stop checking out the girl in row z! It was to signify the start of Motley’s set. These dudes know how to get peoples attention. They kicked off with Wild side from the Girls, Girls, Girls album. As the lights illuminated the arena you couldn’t help but notice the large rollercoaster sat over Tommy Lee’s drum kit and the word SIN in neon lights. It was insane! The show was packed with Fireworks, Flames and Explosions on cue. At this point the venue was nearly packed and everyone was going wild for these guys!!
Sadly, Motley did have a few noticeable technical problems throughout some songs but that didn’t stop them belting out hits. And when you have songs like ‘Girls Girls Girls’ & ‘Kick Start My Heart’ your guaranteed to get the crowd going crazy. Tommy Lee defiantly provided the biggest spectacle with his larger than life drum solo. No one was going to make a trip to the toilet or bar and risk missing this spectacular sight. Tommy’s drum riser was attached to a 360 degree track which resembled the famous London Eye. It firstly started going from side to side until it ended upside down. Check it out on YouTube if you haven’t seen it already. It was amazing finally seeing this band in the flesh, but the only downside for us was that they were on stage for an hour and half and only played 13 songs. Ideally we would have loved to hear more music as these guys don’t tour the UK very often.
After Motley’s performance there was no doubt everyone was thinking ‘How is Def Leppard going to top that’!!! And….what they did was keep it simple. Def didn’t use all the pyrotechnics. They used their extensive back catalogue of hits and let the music do the talking. They just had class about them, and used huge video screens which projected pictures of the band from when they first started to now. They had clever lighting and 3 different tiers to the stage which they put to good effect covering it at all times. They nailed every harmony as originally recorded and ordered the songs so they had the crowd on their feet at all times. It was nice to hear tracks which they hadn’t played before like Undefeated from their latest album, ‘Mirrorball’. To be honest they could have played for another hour and a half with the tracks they couldn’t cram into the set list. The crowd were mesmerised by this legendary rock band!
While stood in the kebab shop after the show we all had a drunken discussion. In fact, it was more of a shouting match as we could barely hear much after 4 hours of solid Rock music but we all decided that the 3 band package really worked well and offered something for everyone. It was an awesome night out (well for Andy especially as he is only allowed out of his cage for gigs and special occasions).
