A los tiernos 15 añitos y después de seis meses como banda, estos atrevidos chicos de Ostersünd (centro de Suecia) grabaron su primer EP y el single ‘Our Time Now’ (escucharlo en Spotify) resonó en las radios locales. Dos años después siguen con las mismas ganas y la misma hambre de directo y acaban de dar su primer concierto en Noruega. Entrevistamos a la banda al completo, que prometió que oiremos mucho de ellos en el futuro.
Os llamáis Pure Faith, ¿de dónde viene y qué cuenta sobre la banda?
Josef Wiktorsson (bajo): El nombre me vino a la cabeza cuando íbamos a participar en una competición musical. No teníamos un nombre, por lo que todos empezamos a soltar lo primero que se nos ocurría y yo dije: Pure Faith. Lo pensamos y nos pareció bien, por lo que lo adoptamos como algo temporal, ¡pero no lo hemos cambiado!
Jesper Lindgren (guitarrista): Pure Faith no significa nada especial, salvo quizá que creemos en nuestra música.
Comenzásteis en diciembre de 2009. ¿Cómo os juntáis y cómo decidís el tipo de banda que tenéis en mente?
J.F: Fuimos todos al mismo instituto. Andreas y yo habíamos tocado juntos antes. Cuando Jesper, Erik, y yo comenzamos a tocar, nos hizo falta un cantante, por lo que sugerí a Andreas.
J.L: Sucedió en una cena de profesores. Necesitaban a alguien que tocara, por lo que aprovechamos la oportunidad y esa misma noche formamos la banda.
Erik Hammarberg (batería): Creo que no sabíamos que tipo de música queríamos tocar porque escuchamos todo tipo de rock, ¡y míranos ahora!
Habéis grabado un EP de cinco canciones. ¿Qué queríais reflejar en él y cómo pensáis que la audiencia está respondiendo?
J.L: Grabamos nuestro ep seis meses después de empezar a funcionar como banda. Demostramos a la gente que éramos cuatro chicos de 15 años que vamos hacia delante por toda nuestra fuerza de voluntad.
J.F: Quería que se distribuyera nuestra música y pensé que grabar un EP era una buena forma. En concreto no he oído lo que piensa la audiencia, pero parece que les gusta.
E.H: Estoy de acuerdo con Josef, todavía no hemos recibido mucho feedback, ni bueno ni malo, pero nos lo pasamos muy bien durante la grabación.
Vuestro primer single es ‘Our Time Now’ y habéis comentado que os fue bien en la radio local. ¿Qué pensáis que les gusta a la gente?
Andreas Karlstrand (cantante): ‘Our Time Now’ es una canción de tiempo alto, con energía y con actitud. Prueba que estamos aquí. Tiene un riff molón, y un gran coro con una fuerte melodía, es decir, en mi opinión, todo lo que debería tener una gran canción.
E.H: ¡Es una canción que la gente recuerda!
J.L: Es una de mis favoritas para tocar en vivo y es una perfecta canción de apertura. ¡Sitúa a la audiencia exactamente donde quieres ponerlos!
Demostramos a la gente que éramos cuatro chicos de 15 años que vamos hacia delante por toda nuestra fuerza de voluntad.
Pronto váis a hacer vuestro primer concierto fuera de Suecia, en Noruega. ¿Qué podéis contarnos al respecto? ¿Qué otras bandas van a tocar?
J.F: Es una competición local para bandas noruegas.
E.H: Vamos a ser los artistas invitados. ¡Allí va a haber un montón de bandas jóvenes!
Habéis dicho: “lo que mejor se nos da en tocar en vivo en frente de una audiencia entusiasta y si no muestran entusiasmo, les haremos mostrarlo”. ¿Cuál es la clave de vuestros conciertos?
A.K: Tenemos un tempo muy alto en nuestras canciones y creo que la multitud puede sentirlo. Además si se percatan de que nos lo pasamos bien, ellos también se lo pasarán bien. Se lo damos todo a la audiencia, por lo que ellos se divierten y nos recuerdan. ¡No importa cuál sea el tamaño de la audiencia, siempre lo damos todo!
J.W: Nuestro guitarrista –Jesper Lindgren- es fantástico sobre el escenario porque trasmite mucha energía y presencia. Y nosotros tratamos de que la audiencia se convierta en uno de nosotros porque les hacemos cantar con nosotros y tenemos una conexión con ellos.
También habéis comentado que se os dan bien los conciertos en acústico. ¿Qué os aportan los acústicos?
E.H: Cuando tocamos en acústico la atmósfera es completamente diferente, como si el sentimiento fuera mayor que en los conciertos normales, que son más sobre hacerlo eléctrico saltando y demás.
A.K: Puede que a la gente no le gustemos por los temas más cañeros, pero que podamos llegarles con las canciones acústicas, por lo que los acústicos son una buena idea para llegar a una audiencia más grande.
¿Habéis grabado un video del single? Si no es así, ¿váis a grabar alguno?
J.L: No lo hemos grabado, pero nos gustaría grabar alguno cuando podamos.
A la hora de componer, ¿qué temas os inspiran? ¿Y cuáles son vuestras influencias?
A.K: Mi inspiración viene de cosas que he experimentado,como puede ser el enamoramiento o una mala ruptura. Pero también puede venir de un periódico porque si encuentro algo que me interese, probablemente escriba una canción al respecto. Mis influencias son Mayday Parade y Chris Daughtry.
J.L: Escribo muchas canciones. No sé que es lo que me impulsa a escribir. La mayoría del tiempo simplemente me siento, toco y me sale un riff molón o una buena estrofa. Tenemos influencias muy diferentes. A mí, creo yo que me influye más lo clásico, bandas como Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Elvis Presley, aquellas bandas y artistas que han pinchado mis padres y mi familia durante mi infancia. También me gustan los artistas de blues, como Howling Wolf y Muddy Waters y creo que esto se percibe en nuestra música.
Sois muy jóvenes, ¿cuáles son vuestras aspiraciones en el mundo de la música?
A.K: Creo que nuestra ambición es que nos vaya bien: tenemos buenas canciones, somos buenos en directo, tocamos con nuestros corazones y lo más importante de todo, ¡nos divertimos muchísimo mientras lo hacemos! ¡Algunas bandas parece que no tienen los huevos para intentar conseguir ser alguien, pero nosotros los tenemos!
¿Cuáles son vuestros planes para 2012?
J.L: Difundir nuestra música tanto como se pueda. ¡Salir y tocar! En el futuro, nos encantaría venir a tocar a España.
E.H.: Tocamos porque nos lo pasamos muy bien y vamos a seguir con ese espíritu, que nos mejora como artistas y músicos.
¿Qué pensáis que es básico que nuestra audiencia conozca sobre vosotros?
A.K: Somos muy jóvenes y sentimos una gran pasión por lo que hacemos. Creemos en nuestra música y esperamos que podamos hacer llegar el mensaje a la multitud, que amamos lo que hacemos y que siempre lo hacemos lo mejor que podemos, ¡pase lo que pase! No pienses que va a ser la última vez que vas a oír sobre nosotros, ¡es sólo el comienzo!

With 15 tender years old and just alter six months as a band, this courageous guys from Ostersünd (centre of Sweden), recorded their first EP and the single ‘Our Time Now’ (listen online with Spotify) was overplayed in local radios. Two years after they keep on with the same will and hunger for playing live and are to play in Norway for the first time. We interviewed the whole band, which promised us we will hear lots about them in the future.
Your name it’s Pure Faith, where does it come from and what does it say about the band?
Josef Viktorsson (bass): I came up with the name when we were gonna sign up for a music competition. We didn’t have a name so we all brainstormed and I said Pure Faith. We thought about it and it felt okay, so we took it for the moment and haven’t changed it!
Jesper Lindgren (guitar): Pure Faith does not stand for something special, maybe the fact that we believe in our music!
You started in December 2009. How all of you get together and what was the type of band you had in mind?
J.F: We all went the same high school. I and Andreas have played together before. When me, Jesper and Erik started to play together we needed a singer so I suggested Andreas.
J.L: It was a teacher dinner one evening and they needed someone to play, we jumped on that and later that night we started this band.
Erik Hammerberg (drums): I believe that we didn’t know what kind of music we wanted to play, we all listened to some kind of rock music and look at us know!
You’ve recorded an EP of five songs. What did you want to reflect on it and what do you think of how the audience it’s answering to it?
J.L: We recorded our ep after we had been playing together for about a half year. We showed people what we were and what four 15 year-old guys can do with pure will.
J.F: I just wanted to distribute our music and I thought that recording an EP would be a good way. I have not really heard what the audience thinks about it but they seem to like it!
E.H: We haven’t received so much feedback on that just like Josef just said, either good or bad, but we had a fun time while we recorded it.
Your first single it’s ‘Our Time is Now’ and you commented it’s doing good at local radio. What do you think people like about that song?
Andreas Karlstrand (vocals): ‘Our time now’ is an up tempo song, a song filled with energy and attitude. This shows that we are here. It’s got a cool riff and a big chorus with h5 melody, all that a good song should have in our opinion.
E.H: It’s a song people remember!
J.L: One of my personal favourites to play live and it’s a perfect opening song. You get the audience right where you want them!
You are doing your first concert outside Sweden, in Norway, soon. What can you tell us about it? Which others bands are playing?
J.F: It’s a district-competition for Norwegians.
E.H: Were gonna be guest artist on that competition. There gonna be lots of young bands there!
You said: “the best thing we know it’s to perform live in front of a enthusiastic audience and if they aren’t enthusiastic, we’ll make them.” What’s the key of your concerts?
A.K: Well, we have very like high tempo in our songs and I think that the crowd can feel that. Also if they see that we have fun on stage they will have fun too. We give everything to the audience, so they have a good time and remember us. No matter how large the audience is, we give everything!
J.W: Our guitarist (Jesper) is amazing on stage. Great energy and audience presence. And we try to make them one of us by make them sing along and have a connection to them.
You also said you are good at doing acoustic sets. What do acoustic sets bring you?
E.H: It’s a completely different atmosphere when we play acoustic; it’s kind of deeper feeling than at the regular gigs which are more like “jumping around doing it electric stuff and so on”.
A.K: People that might not like us for the electric stuff might like us for our acoustic songs. So that’s a good way to reach out to a bigger crowd.
Have you a video of your single? If not, are you recording one?
J.L: We don’t have a video for our single but we love to do one sometime
Which are the topics that inspire you in your song writing? And which are your influences?
A.K: I get my inspiration for lyrics from what I’ve experienced in life, maybe like a crush or a bad break up. But it can also be from a newspaper, like if I found something that interested me I’ll probably write a song about it. My influences are Mayday Parade and Chris Daughtry.
J.L: I write quite a lot of music. I dont really know what’s «trigger» me to write. Most of the time I just sit and play and get into a cool riff or a cool chord progression. We all got different influences, I’m influenced by more old stuff than the others I think. My biggest influences are bands like Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Elvis Presley… such bands and artists that have been playing my parents and family under my childhood. I also love blues artists like Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters and I think that shows a little in our music too.
You are very young, which are your aspirations in the music world?
A.K: I think our ambition is to do good in the music business, we got good songs, we are good live and we are playing with our hearts, and the most important of all, we having really fun while we do it! Some bands don’t seem to have the guts to try to be something but we do!
Which are your plans for 2012?
J.L: To spread our music as much as possible. Go out and play! We would love to come to Spain and play there in the future.
E.H: The reason why we play it’s because it’s so much fun, so we gonna keep up with that “spirit”, improve ourselves as artists and musicians!
What do you think that for our audience it’s basic to know about you?
A.K: That we are very young and have a great passion in what we do. We believe in our music and hope that we can get the message out to the crowd: we love what we do and we’ll always do our best no matter what! Don’t think this is the last you gonna hear about us, this is just the beginning!!
