Ruta Rock Sueca #1: Gotemburgo

ENGLISH VERSION

With the second more important city in Sweden we start the guide from the places you shouldn’t miss when you visit the vikings land.

I arrived to the airport of Landvetter (Gothenburgh) at 9.30 of a Thursday, eager to make the most of my day and a half discovering the charms of the city. The first stop was in the hotel, right in the centre, in Sodra Hamnagatan, in front of a shop of Shock (number 49), which it’s into rock, rockabilly, punk, and horror. Compared to the one in Stockholm, the range it’s wider and the place it’s bigger. Very interesting the dress of The Ramones. There you’ll also find many jewellery and t-shirts.
They distribute the t-shirts from the metal festival Metal Town Fest which takes place in June (Goteborg Gallop, Jocekyvagen, 1), one of the most important in the country. In this year’s edition gathered bands as Candlemass, In Flames, Devil Driver, Mastodon, or Trivium.

Quite near and inside Nordstan department stores I came across one of the 30 stores in Sweden of Rocks (Postgatan 26-32), the place for music and cinema goodies. Half of the selection it’s dedicated to rock and the most well known bands of the past and of the present. They are never short of Sabaton, KISS, and Iron Maiden.

Another of the most well known options are the two shops in Gothenburg of Bengans, the online giant, (Stigbergstorget,1 and Östra Hamnagatan 46-48). Cds, dvds, and merchandising of the bands are the deal, with t-shirts, cups, books, and life bags. They also sell concert tickets.

For getting Dresde befote partying, if you like Gothic, you’d better adress to Grothica (Vastra Hamnagatan, 9), a space where you should go down some stairs to access to corsettes, dresses, t-shirts, and accesories for girls and boys, that brings to mind the shops from Camden Town (London).

Having dinner to the rhythm of rock can be achieved in the classic Hard Rock Café (Kungsportavenyn, 10). The night I chose, the musical selection the most opted for Bruce Springsteen, because he was playing the next day on Ullevi Stadion (located to 700 metres of the train and bus central station), venue where have played bands as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax, and that can fit 75.000 people. Fans were waiting for him since the early hours in the door of Elite Plaza (Vastra Hamnagatan, 3), hotel where are installed all the stars that play in Gothenburgh, and which standard room costs 840 SEK (around 100 euros).

The memorabilia selection of this café included the smashed guitar of George Lynch of Dokken, the jacket of Living Colour, the leather jacket of Sid Vicious, Barbie dolls of Abba, a red jacket of Elvis Presley, clothes of Madonna of True Blue era, and the jacket of Slash.

They played Steve Winwood, AC/DC, Guns N’Roses, Bowie, Rolling Stones and Oasis, overall.

The local hamburger was the common in the Swedish Hard Rock Cafes, a salmon loin with onion rings, sour cream, and fries. And as merchandising I got a very cool plush with a fucsia electric guitar that if you squeezed it turned into a wild rocker.

To end the night, nothing better than Sticky Fingers (Kasentorget, 7), where Y&T will play on 22 nd September and have placed bands like Crashdiet, which handles different clubs and djs depending on the night. They also serve fast food and have happy hour on Thursdays, Fridays, and on Saturdays from 20 to 23 hours.

They have 4 floors and in every of them play a different musical style. In the rock one, they had memorabilia from Hardcore Superstar, native from the city- a guitar and signed photographs. The admission fee was 60 SEK; the cloakroom, 10 SEK; and a cider, 50 SEK. The party timetable for summer, from 20h until 4 am.

One of the places I was recommended later was Rockbaren (Kristinenlundsgatan, 14) in which you can also enjoy dinner and that’s open from 17h to 2 or 3 AM, depends on the day.

Often Liseberg amusement park has concerts, included in the price of the ticket for the park, and take place on Stora Scenen. On 17 th August will play Amaranthe and on 18 th, Alice Cooper.

Couldn’t cover all, but that was as far as my trip went. The last short visit was on the morning, to Stadsmuseum (Norra Hamnagatan, 12) , where I could check why Vikings were a hot with the British women of their times; because of their skills on combing and plaiting their hair and beard and their cleanliness, because they had a bath every Saturday, but that’s another story.
