Sturm und Drang es una de esas bandas que sorprende tanto por su calidad y competencia, como por su historia… Formada en Vaasa (Finlandia) en el 2004, cuando sus componentes tenían 13 años, a Andre Linman (voz), Henrik Kurkiala (bajo), Jesper Welroos (teclado), Calle Fahllund (batería) y Alexander Ivars (guitarra) nadie les tomó en serio hasta un año después, cuando tras tocar como teloneros para los suecos The Hellacopters, el sello discográfico HMC les dio su primera oportunidad, y pudieron grabar su primer single y videoclip ‘Rising Son‘, sello con el que también sacarían su primer álbum, ‘Learning to Rock‘ (2007).
En 2008, y con Gun Records, sacarían su segundo disco de estudio: ‘Rock n’ Roll Children‘, que les consolidaba como banda en su país, siendo número uno de ventas, y que les dio la posibilidad de realizar un tour por Japón y Centroeuropa. Por las mismas fechas también consiguieron ser teloneros de Apocalyptica, y abrir para el Wacken Open Air durante dos años consecutivos. De este segundo trabajo merece la pena destacar la balada ‘A Million Nights’, tanto por la capacidad vocal de Andre, como por su parte instrumental.
El pasado mes de Septiembre, tras dos años y algunos cambios en la agrupación (Henrik e Ivars dejaron el grupo, y ahora encontramos en su lugar a Joel Wendlin y Jani Kuoppamaa), salió el que es su tercer álbum: ‘Graduation Day‘, bajo la firma discográfica Warner Music Finland.
El disco comienza con ‘Your Love Is For Sale‘ y ‘Dark Little Angel of Mine‘, dos buenos trallazos, en los que podemos apreciar influencias de grupos como Sonata Arctica y Stratovarius. La primera con un ritmo muy marcado, y la segunda con un medio tiempo que cobra fuerza en unos estribillos muy melódicos. Tras entrar en calor, el grupo hace una pausa con ‘Molly The Murderer‘, una balada que sigue la línea melódica del grupo, con buenos riffs y de la cual podemos ver un primer videoclip.
Seguimos con ‘Lucky‘, una canción cargada de fuerza, y con ‘Hammer to Fall‘, mucho más dura que las anteriores y con un sonido más progresivo. Cargada de speed guitars, muestra el lado más heavy del grupo. ‘Goddman Liar‘ es la segunda balada del disco, una canción que combina diversas influencias, y que su cantante ha descrito como: «un híbrido, con partes de Michael Bolton y Bullet for my Valentine. Es una balada melódica, pero tocada al estilo heavy». Otra canción contundente sin lugar a dudas es ‘Futherland‘, que recuerda a Iron Maiden en su solo de guitarra, y a la que sigue ‘I Hurt Myself‘, la tercera balada del disco.
Para concluir y acabar de dar todo, encontramos ‘Party Like a Rockstar‘. Una canción muy fresca e innovadora, donde la banda hace uso de la música electrónica, y ‘Light Years Apart‘, para mi una de las canciones más especiales del álbum. Su parte instrumental recuerda a una canción tribal, y hace imposible no pensar en las tierras escandinavas, uniendo los antiguos sonidos a los ritmos nuevos, como si el grupo deseara crear un nexo de unión entre un antes y un ahora.

Sturm und Drang are one of those bands that makes you feel amazed with their history and brilliant quality/skills… His career begins in Vaasa, Finland, back in 2004, when their founding members: Andre Linman (vocals), Henrik Kurkiala (bass), Jesper Welroos (keyboards), Calle Fahllund (drums) and Alexander Ivars (guitar) were teenagers, and nobody cared about them, until 2005, when after playing as an opening act for The Hellacopters, HMC label group offers them the chance to enter the studio and launch their first single/video ‘Rising son‘. After that, and also with HMC, they released their debut album ‘Learning to rock‘ (2007).
In 2008 they signed with Gun Records, and launched their sophomore album, ‘Rock n’ roll children‘, increasing their reputation in Finland, cracking the charts and rising to the first place on sales. This was the beginning of an international tour around Japan and Europe. On that year, they also got the chance to be the opening act for Apocalyptica, and even played at Wacken Open Air Fest for two consecutive years. On this second album, the vocal skills of Andre, and the musical background on the ballad ‘A Million Nights‘, caught my attention.
Last september, two years later, and after making some changes in their line-up (Henrik and Ivars left the band, entering in their place Joel Wendlin and Jani Kuoppamaa), they released their third album: ‘Graduation Day‘, under Warner Music Finland label group.
The album starts with ‘Your Love Is For Sale‘ and ‘Dark Little Angel of Mine‘, two strong hits, on which we can find some references from bands like Sonata Arctica and Stratovarius. The first song runs with raw power, and the second one becomes a slow-burst tune, but filled with highly melodic and catchy choruses. After the warm up, the band pulls the brakes with ‘Molly The Murderer‘, a groovy ballad full of good riffs, that they also release on video.
The next songs are ‘Lucky‘, filled up with force, and ‘Hammer to Fall‘, so much harder than the first ones and with a progressive touch, fast guitars and showing up their heavy face. ‘Goddman Liar‘ is the second ballad, mixing up various influences, and is described by the frontman as «a hybrid betweeen Michael Bolton and Bullet for my Valentine. It’s a melodic ballad, but played with a heavy touch». Another strong song is ‘Futherland‘, which reminds us of Iron Maiden through the guitar solo part. The third ballad of the record makes its entrance after that.
Near the end, we find ‘Party Like a Rockstar‘, a fresh and modern song, on which they add electronic elements, and finally ‘Light Years Apart‘, one of the most special songs in the whole album for me. Adding some instrumental arrangements, it sounds like a tribal song, and reminds us of nordic lands, mixing ancient sounds with modern tunes, like they were trying to merge past and present times.
