Jóvenes pero con los instrumentos lo bastante afilados, estos tres suecos entre 16 y 19 años, con su debut –’By Blood, By Heart (Sound Pollution)’- han hecho astillas las listas de éxitos de su país y sólo les ha detenido el último disco de Europe. Ni mucho menos ha sido casualidad, como lo confirma el segundo single que estrenan estos días, por lo que entrevistamos a su frontman, Max Landegren, para que nos explicara su secreto y cómo viven el rock.
Os descubrimos en la listas de éxitos sueca. ¿Cómo sienta colar allí vuestro debut?
Genial. Me refiero a que me parece una muestra de que hemos compuesto un disco muy bueno y que la gente también siente curiosidad acerca de escuchar aquello que viene de Less Than 4. Fuimos número 2 en el apartado de hard rock cuando el número 1 era Bag Of Bones de Europe y pienso que fue bastante guay.
Os llamáis Less Than 4 y sóis tres miembros. ¿El nombre de la banda oculta un significado más profundo que ese?
No. Fue el abuelo de Ludo –el batería- el que dijo que nuestra banda debería ser un máximo de tres. Empezamos a pensar al respecto porque nos pareció muy guay y un tiempo después se nos ocurrió Less Than 4. Es la misma idea con diferentes palabras.

Es maravillosos que unos chicos tan jóvenes como vosotros hayáis sacado un disco tan bueno. ¿Cómo os juntásteis para crear la banda? ¿Costó mucho tiempo parir este trabajo?
Gracias. Todos somos amigos de la infancia. Steff–el bajista- y yo llevamos tocando juntos desde que teníamos nueve o diez años, pero no puedes formar una banda de rock sin un batería por lo que un rato después pillamos a ludo porque era el único en nuestro pueblo que sabía tocar, jaja. Nos encanta hacer esto juntos y por eso funciona tan bien. En este disco hemos trabajado con tres tíos, Rikard Löfgren, Rickard Engborg y Gustav Ydenius, que son fantásticos y contribuyeron con grandes ideas. Rikard Löfgren es el productor.
Sois de Dalarna. ¿Encontráis más dificultades a la hora de desarrollaros como banda que si fueráis de lugares como Estocolmo o Gotemburgo?
Sí y no. Mi padre ha convertido el garaje de nuestra granja en un estudio y sala de ensayos. Cuando vives así practicas música un montón porque no hay mucho más que hacer. Viví en Estocolmo durante 3 años, estaba estudiando música allí y, por supuesto, es genial porque en Estocolmo pasan más cosas en este negocio. No estamos pegados a este pueblo, nos mudaremos a una ciudad más grande cuando lo necesitemos.
El disco se llama By Blood, By Heart y parece un gran neón para que la gente repare en que sois rockeros auténticos. ¿Pensáis que hay demasiados rockeros falsos? ¿Os causan problemas?
Exacto, hacemos nuestra tarea con la sangre de nuestras venas y con nuestro corazón. Es una pregunta curiosa porque la segunda canción “In It For The Money” trata sobre un poser. Trata de comportarse como una estrella pero sólo va a por el dinero, esa mierda sale a la luz. Tiene que ser porque lo sientas de verdad, no sé si hay muchos posers pero joder nunca funcionará sin corazón y sin alma.
¿Qué significa el rock para vosotros?
El rock es un estilo de vida, vende tu alma al Diablo y lame su culito para triunfar. El título de nuestro disco te cuenta sobre que va.
¿Cuáles son vuestros heroes?
Debo decir que Guns N’ Roses porque fue el disco ‘Appetite For Destruction’ el que me impulsó a empezar a tocar la guitarra. Comencé a cantar posteriormente y Sebastian Bach me inspiró mucho. Mi padre es mi mayor héroe porque me introdujo en la escucha del hard rock.
Váis a publicar pronto vuestro segundo video. ¿De qué canción? ¿Qué significa esta canción para vosotros?
Publicamos el segundo single el día 14 de noviembre. Ahora mismo no vamos a grabar video. Lanzamos “Fucked Up Kid” como segundo single porque es un éxito seguro,jajja. Adoro esa canción, tiene gancho y es pesada y tiene un coro muy pegadizo, eso es.
¿Qué podemos encontrar en uno de vuestros conciertos?
Alta intensidad y un show increíble. Eso es lo que encontraréis.
Sois una banda nueva para nuestros lectores, ¿qué les diríais para convertiros en una banda que adoren?
De verdad que espero veros a todos de gira por España, en algún momento. Sería genial hacer algunos shows allí. E iremos, seguro, es cuestión de tiempo. Por lo que permaneced atentos a Less Than 4. Sois los mejores.

Young but with their instruments fully shaped, these three Swedish between 16 and 19 years old, with their debut –’By Blood, By Heart (Sound Pollution)’- have splintered the hit parades of their country and they could only be stopped by the last record of Europe. It was no chance at all, as they confirm with their second single, released these days. We interviewed frontman Max Landegren, so that he shared their secret and explained how the way they live rock.
We discovered you on Sverige Top Listan. How does it feel like to be there with your debut?
Great, I mean it feels like a proof that we have create a very good album, And also that people are curious to hear what Less Than 4 has to came up with. We came in as second place in the category of hard rock, the album on the first place was Bag Of Bones By Europe and I think that was pretty cool.
Your name is Less Than 4 and you are three members. Does the name of the band have a deeper meaning beyond that?
No it doesn’t, actually it was Ludo’s (the drummer) grandfather who said that our band name should be max 3, and we started thinking about that, because we thought it was pretty cool, and after a while we came up with Less Than 4. It’s the same idea but different words.
It’s amazing that some guys so young as you could create such a good first album. How do you all come together to create the band? Did it take long to give birth to this work?
Thank you. The three of us in the band are all childhood friends, me and Steff has played together since we where about nine or ten years old, but you can not have a hard rock band without a drummer so after a while we’ve just picked Ludo as a drummer cause he was the only guy in our village that actually could play, haha. We love doing this together and that´s why it works so well. On this record we worked together with three guys, Rikard Löfgren, Rickard Engborg and Gustav Ydenius, They are so great, and they came up with great ideas to this record as well. Rikard Löfgren is the producer for the album.
You are from Dalarna. Do you find it more difficult to develop as a band there that if you were for places like Stockholm and Gothenburg?
Yes and no. My dad has expended our garage at the farm to a studio and a rehearsal room. When you live like this you work a lot with the music cause there is not much else to do. I lived in Stockholm for three years, I was studying music there and off course, it’s great because there happen more things in this business in Stockholm. We are not stuck in this village, we are moving to a bigger city when it’s needed.
The album it’s called By Blood, By Heart and it seems like a big spot light so that people notice you are real rockers. Do you think that are too many fake rockers around? Do they cause you trouble?
Exactly we are doing our thing by blood by heart. That is a funny question because the second song of the album “In It For The Money” is about a fake rocker. He is trying to act like a star but he is only in it for the money, such crap shines through. It have to be by blood by heart, I don’t know if there are many fake rockers but fuck it, it will never work with out heart and soul anyway.
What does rock mean for you?
Rock music is a lifestyle, sell you soul to the devil and lick his ass to success. Our title of the album tells you what it’s about.
Which are your heroes?
I must say Guns N’ Roses cause it was the “Appetite For Destruction” album that got me start playing guitar. I started to sing later and Sebastian Bach was great inspiration. My dad is my biggest hero because he led me in to the hard rock music.
You are releasing soon your second video. Of which song? What does this song mean to you?
We are releasing a second single on November 14th. We are not supposed to shoot a video for that song right now. We are release “Fucked Up Kid” as a second single, because it’s a hit, haha. I love that song, it has got the hook and its heavy and a very catchy chorus, That’s it.
What can we find in one of your concerts?
High energy, and a totally kick ass show. That´s what you get in our concerts.
You are a new band for our readers, what would you tell them so that you became a home band?
I really hope to se you all on tour in Spain sometime. It would be great to do some kick ass shows over there. And we will come to do that for sure, it´s a matter of time. So stay tuned for Less Than 4. You´re the best.
