La prensa sueca les ha definido como los nuevos reyes del hard rock old school y ellos aseguran que harán lo inimaginable por garantizar tu entretenimiento. Con 100 conciertos a sus espaldas y hambres de muchos más, los de Gotemburgo nos cedieron a su frontman para que nos hablaran sobre el rock y el lugar que tiene la banda en él.
Os conocimos como teloneros de H.E.A.T en Sticky Fingers (Gotemburgo). ¿Qué partes de la historia de Gloria nos hemos perdido hasta entonces? ¿Y cuáles son vuestros recuerdos sobre este concierto y sobre las otras bandas?
Nos lo pasamos muy bien con nuestros amigos de H.E.A.T y de Crazy Lixx. Compartimos la agencia de booking, por lo que lo natural para nosotros fue unirnos a ellos como teloneros. Aunque H.E.A.T están más orientados al AOR que nosotros, inmediatamente encontramos en estos chicos la misma pasión por el rock and roll, por la fiesta y básicamente por pasárselo bien que tenemos nosotros. ¡Erik Grönwall se convirtió instantáneamente en un buen amigo! Ese chico es tan bueno bebiendo cerveza como cantando, ¡podemos asegurártelo, ja ja! Sentimos que nuestro rock setentero, el sonido más sleazy de Crazy Lixx, y las canciones poderosas de H.E.A.T componía un gran tour. Nos lo pasamos muy bien sobre el escenario y la audiencia también se divirtió. Fue una gran noche de diversión y de rock and roll. Esperemos que volvamos a girar juntos en 2013.

En directo sois muy enérgicos y crudos, con 100 conciertos a vuestras espaldas, ¿es en directo donde vuestra música cobra todo su sentido?
¡Desde luego! Siempre hemos sentido que nuestros discos -‘Shades of White’ (2011) y ‘Out of the Shade’ (2012)- acabaron siendo un poco blandos. Por supuesto que siguen siendo buenos, discos rompedores, pero como tú has dicho, es en directo donde nuestra música cobra VIDA. Tan pronto como subimos al escenario lo que estamos haciendo nos posee y nos obsesiona. No hay fronteras marcadas. Como frontman haré cualquier cosa para ganar la atención de la audiencia. No me detendré hasta que la audiencia esté tan sudorosa y exhausta como yo. En nuestro próximo álbum –que se publicará esta primavera- hemos tratado de capturar para la grabación esa energía cruda del directo. Va a ser más sucio, más crujiente y más heavy que antes –pero todavía melódico, divertido y pegadizo y setentero que moverá a la fiesta.
Tocasteis en el Sweden Rock. ¿Qué significó para vosotros?
Como banda sueca que somos, fue un sueño hecho realidad. El Sweden Rock Festival es un festival de alta gama en este país.¡Es tan grande como parece! Y para nosotros supuso tocar en un gran escenario donde podíamos correr y hacer locuras sin chocar los unos contra los otros, como a veces nos pasa en escenarios más pequeños. Conseguimos un montón de fans aquel día. Y tan pronto como acabamos la actuación, nuestros teléfonos empezaron a sonar, parece que todos en Suecia querían de repente contratarnos. Por lo que extendimos nuestro tour unas diez fechas este verano. ¡Grandes tiempos!
Percibimos en vuestra música la onda de The Romantics. ¿Qué bandas solíais escuchar cuando erais adolescentes?
Crecimos con KISS, Ramones, Thin Lizzy, Misfits e incluso con un poco de Stones y The Beatles, por mencionar a algunos de nuestros héroes. Yo soy un gran fan de KISS; a Carl (guitarrista) le encantan The Hellacopters; Kid (vocalista y guitarrista) adora a Jimmi Hendrix y a Danzig; y Fredrik (bajista) se decanta más por Alice Cooper y cosas más heavies como and Graveyard. Tratamos de verter algo de cada banda en nuestro propio sonido –pero sin copiarlos, por supuesto-. No somos una banda tributo. Tenemos nuestro propio estilo.

En 2011, publicasteis vuestro debut, que funcionó muy bien en las listas suecas y recibió muy buenas críticas. ¿Cómo lo juntasteis todo: qué queríais expresar, cómo encontrasteis al productor más adecuado, y cuáles son vuestras canciones preferidas.
En otoño de 2010 firmamos un contrato discográfico. Uno de los grandes A&Rs vino a uno de nuestros conciertos y quería contratarnos, directamente. Y,de repente, todo sucedió rapidísimo. Se trajo a Boba Lindström de The Hellacopters como productor y acabamos en los estudios Kingside de Estocolmo, donde han grabado artistas como Celine Dion y Per Gessle y donde han compuesto algunos de sus mayores éxitos. Boba fue maravilloso a la hora de entender nuestra música. Queríamos hacer un disco de rock clásico con canciones pegadizas y un montón de sabores de los 70. Boba tenía a Nicke Andersson (Hellacopters/Imperial State Electric) al teléfono todo el rato, consultándole sobre diversas materias. Nicke fue un gran maestro de batería y gritaba “Más batería al estilo de Peter Criss” a través del teléfono de Boba.
De cualquier forma, estamos muy orgullosos de cómo salió el disco. En nuestra opinión salió un poco blando y previsible. Aunque sigue siendo rock and roll. Pero nos hubiera gustado que hubiese sido un poco más agresivo y duro. Pero es un buen álbum. A la gente parece que le encanta y debutó como número 1 en la lista ventas de rock sueca. Pero sacarlo al mercado fue una verdadera lucha.
Cuando acabamos de grabarlo resultó que la compañía de discos nos había jodido completamente. Se negaron a pagar tanto el estudio como a Boba. Por lo que básicamente le dijimos a la compañía que se jodiera y rompimos en pedazos el contrato.
Luego nos pagamos el disco, de nuestros bolsillos y encontramos una nueva casa en Wild Kingdom Records/Sound Pollution. ¡Esa sí que fue una verdadera compañía de discos! Han sido fantásticos para nosotros, han conseguido que nuestra música se reseñe en todo el globo y que esté disponible en cada país.
En mayo de 2012 publicasteis un ep. ¿Por qué no un lp? ¿Qué diferencias podemos encontrar con vuestro primer lanzamiento?
Cuando hicimos nuestro primer disco grabamos un par de temas extra que no encajaban en el concepto de sonido del larga duración. Pero seguían siendo grandes canciones que no queríamos desechar. Teníamos contratado una gran gira de verano por lo que pensamos “¿por qué no hacemos un EP de las canciones que hemos apartado?”. Por lo que cogimos los archivos de sonido y los metimos en nuestro estudio. Grabamos algunas nuevas guitarras y vocales y volvimos el sonido más heavy y sucio. ¡Y voila! Un nuevo EP y algunas nuevas canciones que tocamos en nuestros shows del verano, para hacer las cosas más interesantes para la audiencia y para nosotros. Realmente pensamos que el EP salió muy bien. Se acerca más al sonido del directo.

Habéis sacado los videos de ‘I Can Make Your Run’ y ‘Adore’, que son una mezcla entre la delicadeza sueca y el sabor de bandas como Jet. ¿Cuál es vuestra marca de fábrica? ¿Qué canción será la próxima?
¡Amamos rodar videos! Es una gran forma de expresarnos. Creo que ‘Adore’, como canción, crece y mejora cuando ves el vídeo. El nuevo vídeo se grabará a principios de año, para el primer single del nuevo álbum. Todavía no hemos decidido cuál será. Se está grabando el disco mientras escribo esto. Probablemente se publicará en abril, con el vídeo.
Sois de Gotemburgo, como bandas como Hammerfall o Hardcore Superstar. ¿Pensáis que sois diferentes a las bandas de Estocolmo?
En realidad nosotros somos de Skövde, un bonito pueblo bastante cercano a Gotemburgo. Para nosotros Gotemburgo es como nuestra casa. Existe una gran diferencia entre Estocolmo y Gotemburgo. Gotemburgo es la capital del heavy metal en Suecia. Es un poco como Detroit, ¿sabes? La gente trabaja en la fábricas y en las grandes industrias y sus almas están llenas de puro rock and roll desde que nacen. Estocolmo es una gran ciudad también. Amamos Estocolmo y hay un 100% de buenos clubs. ¡Hemos tocado en todos! Pero las raíces del rock son más profundas en el costa oeste, en nuestra opinión. La mayoría de las bandas de Estocolmo están metidas en la moda. Cada concierto es más o menos un show de moda, con todas esas bandas sleazies saliendo de todas partes. La ropa y la laca parecen más importantes que la música y que la actuación. Las bandas de Gotemburgo son a menudo algo más oscuras, más heavies y más sucias.
2013 se acerca, ¿qué planes tenéis para este año?
¡Acabar el nuevo disco y publicará en abril! Va a ser genial. Honestamente pensamos que cada canción del nuevo es maravillosa. ¡Vamos a llevar nuestro sonido a un nuevo nivel! Con un poco de suerte giraremos por los clubs de Suecia y de Europa para promocionarlo y en el verano participaremos en tantos festivales como podamos. También estamos negociando para ser los teloneros de algunas grandes bandas, pero ahora mismo no se puede comentar nada más al respecto.
Decidnos cómo conseguir que la audiencia española os adore.
Todo lo que nos rodea es REAL. Escribimos nuestras propias canciones y nos rompemos el culo conduciendo de sala a sala y tocando echando nuestros corazones por la boca. Estamos aquí para entretenerte. Haremos lo imposible para que sonrías. Estamos aquí para probar que el rock and roll puede seguir siendo divertido y pegadizo. Es una dedicación 24:7. Trata sobre la libertad, sobre seguir tus sueños, y sobre convertir cada día en algo especial. Sabemos que la vida puede ser una carga y entonces es cuando necesitas más el rock and roll. Es una forma de escape de la realidad. Te inyectaremos y te seduciremos con canciones poderosas y apasionadas actuaciones. En Suecia se refieren a nosotros habitualmente como los “nuevos reyes del hard rock old school” y créenos, ¡The Gloria Story trata acerca de organizar una fiesta por todo lo alto y TÚ, España, estás invitada!
Adoramos vuestro país. Hemos estado allí como turistas, disfrutando de cada aspecto de vuestra cultura, del cálido clima y de la adorable comida. ¡Creemos que la gente española son muy cálidos, con la mente muy abierta y grandes fans del rock and roll! Swedish press have defined them as the new kings of old school hard rock and they assure that they’ll make anything and everything to guarantee your amusement. With 100 concerts on their back and hunger for many more, the guys from Gothenburg borrowed us their frontman so that he chatted with us about the world of rock and about where the band lays.
We’ve met you as supporters of H.E.A.T in Sticky Fingers (Gothenburg). Which parts of the story of Gloria have we missed until then? And which are your memories about this concert and about the other bands?
We had a great time with our new friends in H.E.A.T and Crazy Lixx. They have the same booking agency as we have, so it was a natural thing for us to join them as opening act. Even though H.E.A.T is more AOR oriented than we are, we immediately found that those guys have the same passion for rock and roll, partying and basically havin’ a good time as we do. Eric Grönwall instantly became a good friend! That guy is as good at drinking beer as he is at singing, we can tell you! Haha. We feel that our 70’s rock, Crazy Lixx sleazier sound and the catchy, powerful songs of H.E.A.T made a really good tour-package. We had a great time on stage, and the audience was enjoying it to. A good night of fun and rock and roll. We will hopefully do some more touring together 2013.
You have a very energetic and raw live performance, with 100 concerts on your schedule . Is live where you music takes its full meaning?
Definetely! We’ve always felt that our albums -‘Shades of White’ 2011 and ‘Out of the Shade’ 2012- turned out a bit to soft. Sure, they are still good, rocking albums. But as you said, live is where our music comes to LIFE. As soon as we hit the stage we become completely possessed and obsessed about what we are doing. There is no holds barred. As a frontman I will do pretty much everything to get the audiences attention. I won’t stop until the audience is as sweaty and exhausted as I am. On our next album -released this spring- we’ve really tried to capture that raw live energy on the recordings. It’s gonna be dirtier, crunchier and heavier than before – but still melodic, fun and catchy 70’s rock that will get any party started!
You played Sweden Rock. What did that mean to you?
As a Swedish band it was a dream come true. Sweden Rock Festival is “top of the food chain” in this country. It’s as big as it gets! And to us it meant playing on a big stage where we could run around and go crazy without bumping into each other, like we sometimes do on smaller stages. We got ourselves a lot of new fans that day. And as soon as we had finished our show our phones started ringing – it seemed like everyone in Sweden suddenly wanted to book us. So we extended our tour with at least 10 extra concerts this summer. Good times!
We have in your music the vibe of bands as The Romantics. Which are the bands you used to listen to as teenagers?
We grew up with KISS, Ramones, Thin Lizzy, Misfits and even a bit of Stones and The Beatles to mention but a few of our heroes. Filip (singing/guitars) is the big Kiss-fan, Carl (guitar) is crazy about The Hellacopters, Kid (singing/guitars) loves Jimmi Hendrix and Danzig and Fredrik (bass) is into Alice Cooper and heavier stuff like Graveyard. We try to pour something from each band into our own sound – but still without ripping them off, of course. We are not a tribute band. We have our own style.
On 2011, you released your debut, which did well on Swedish charts and had very good reviews. How did you put it altogether: What did you wanted to express? How did you find the right producer? Which are your favourite songs?
We got ourselves a record deal, in the fall of 2010. These big shot A&Rs came to one of our shows and wanted to sign us, straight away. And all of a sudden everything happened very fast. Boba Lindström from The Hellacopters were brought in as a producer, and we ended up in Kingside Studios, Stockholm where artists like Celine Dion and Per Gessle made some of their biggest hits. Boba was great at understanding our music. We wanted to do a classic rock album, with catchy tunes and a lot of flavours of the 70’s. Boba had Nicke Andersson (Hellacopters/Imperial State Electric) on the phone all the time, consulting him in various matters. Nicke was a great drum coach – and would scream “More Peter Criss vibe” thru Boba’s phone.
Anyway, we are really proud of the way the album turned out. In our opinion the album turned out a bit “safe and soft”. It’s still rock and roll though. But we wish it could have been slightly more aggressive and rough. But it’s a good album. People seemed to love it. And it debuted at #1 on the Swedish rock chart. But getting it out on the market was a real struggle. When we had finished recording the album it turned out that the record company had fucked us over. They refused to pay both the studio and Boba. So we basically told the record company to fuck off, and tore our contract in two peaces. We then paid for the album ourselves, out of our own pockets – and went on to find a new home with Wild Kingdom Records/Sound Pollution. Now that is a real record company! They have been great for us – getting our music reviewed all over the globe and making it available pretty much in every country.
On May 2012 you released an ep. Why didn’t you go for a lp? Which are the differences we can find with your first release?
When we did our first album we recorded a couple of extra tracks that didn’t really fit in to the whole sound of the full length album. But they were still great songs that we didn’t wanna throw away. We had a great summer-tour coming up this year, and we thought “why not make an EP out of the left over tracks?” So we took the audio files, brought them into our own studio. Recorded some new guitars and vocals – and made the sound a little heavier and dirtier. And voila! A new EP – and a few new songs to play at our summer shows, to make things interesting for the audience and for ourselves. We actually think the EP turned out great. It’s got more of a live-sound to it.
There are the videos of ‘I Can Make Your Run’ and ‘Adore’, that are a mingle between the Swedish delicacy and the taste of bands like Jet. Which is your trade mark? Which song will be your next?
We love making videos! It’s a great way of expressing ourselves. I think Adore, as a song, grows and becomes better when you look at the video. The next video will be made early next year. For the first single of the new album. We haven’t decided which one yet. The album is being recorded as I write this. It will probably be out in April, along with the video.
You are from Gothenburg, as bands as Hammerfall and Hardcore Superstar. Do you think there’s a different feeling from the bands of Stockholm?
We are actually from Skövde, a small town pretty close to Gothenburg. We feel like Gothenburg is home to us. There’s a big difference between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Gothenburg is the heavy metal capital of Sweden. It’s a bit like Detroit, you know. People work at factories and at big industries – and their souls are filled with pure rock and roll from the day they are born. Stockholm is a great city too. We love Stockholm – and there’s 100% of great rock clubs. We have played them all! But the roots of rock grow deeper on the West Coast in our opinion. Most bands from Stockholm are into “fashion”. Every show is more or less also a fashion show. Like with all those sleaze-bands popping up everywhere. The clothes and the hairspray seems to be more important than the music and the performance. Gothenburg bands are often slightly darker, heavier and dirtier.
2013 it’s approaching, which are your plans for this year?
Finishing up our new album and getting it out in April! It’s gonna be great. We honestly think that every song on the new one is amazing. We will take our sound to a whole new level! Hopefully we will do a club tour of Sweden and Europe to promote the new album. And in the summer we will probably do as many festivals as possible. We are also negotiating with some major headliners to be their supporting bands on tour. But nothing can be revealed right now.

Everything about us is REAL. We write our own songs, and we bust our asses – driving from venue to venue playing our hearts out. We are here for your entertainment. We will do anything and everything to put a smile on your faces. We are here to prove that rock and roll can still be fun and catchy. It’s a 24:7 dedication. It’s about freedom, about following your dreams, and about turning every day into something special. We know life can be a drag. That’s when you need rock and roll the most. It’s an escape from reality. We will inject you and seduce you with powerful songs and passionate performances. In Sweden we are often refered to as “The new kings of old school hard rock”. And trust us; The Gloria Story is all about putting on a ROYAL party. And YOU, Spain, are invited!
We love your country. We have been there as tourists, enjoying every aspect of your culture, warm weather and lovely food. We find that the people of Spain are very warm, open minded and great fans of rock and roll! We have yet to play Spain. But hopefully we will make that happen in 2013! Can’t wait to see ya!
