Bueno, bueno… los primeros días del año no solo traen un frío del carajo, sino que también nos ofrecen lo nuevo de Hinder, ‘Welcome to the Freakshow‘. Un disco que promete calentar el ambiente.
Es el cuarto álbum de estudio del grupo y salió a la calle el pasado 4 de diciembre, aunque el primer single, ‘Save me‘, se puede escuchar ya desde el mes de agosto. Cuenta con la firma del sello Republic Records, y ha sido producido por el guitarrista de Faktion, Marshall Dutton, junto al propio Cody Hanson (batería del grupo). Su duración es de poco más de 36 minutos, y la banda compuso en total unas treinta canciones, de las que terminaron escogiendo estas once. Entre los problemas que tuvieron que afrontar, se encontraba el enganche a las drogas que atravesaba su cantante, Austin Winkler. Según confesó en una entrevista con Billboard, grabó el disco mientras atravesaba una etapa muy complicada de su adicción, ingresando justo al terminarlo en un programa de rehabilitación.
Comienza con la ya mencionada, ‘Save me‘, y en la que al igual que otras canciones del grupo, presenta unos ritmos fuertes, que calan, con unos estribillos pegadizos y que te dejan pidiendo más. Le sigue en la misma línea ‘Ladies Come First‘, aunque con la presencia de algunos elementos electrónicos. ‘Shoulda Known Better‘ por su parte, es la primera lenta. Se trata de un medio tiempo en el cual la voz ronca y rota de Austin, se une a un piano y a una bonita parte instrumental donde destaca la batería. Todo da como resultado una canción fina y elegante, romántica pero sin rozar lo ñoño, muy emotiva e intensa. Tras este medio tiempo encontramos ‘Freakshow‘, muy del rollo de su anterior LP, ‘All American Nightmare‘ (2010). Lo más destacable es su estribillo: muy pegadizo y potente, en una canción que deja espacio a unas guitarras muy agresivas.
A continuación damos paso al que podría ser el problema del disco: cuatro canciones lentas, muy bonitas, pero demasiado seguidas. La primera es ‘Talk to me‘, de ritmo country, y con una línea vocal impresionante, es una canción preciosa. Le sigue ‘Get Me Away From You‘, también muy emotiva, y en la que las guitarras acústicas conjugan con el piano a la perfección. ‘It’s just me‘ sería la más popera. Y para acabar con esta tanda, ‘I don’t wanna believe‘, creo que mi favorita del disco. Desde las primeras notas es emotiva y vibrante, el uso que hace el grupo tanto de la parte instrumental como vocal es fantástica. Comienza lenta pero intensa, y va in crescendo hasta llegar al climax en los estribillos, como el buen sexo: suave, intenso y te deja con ganas de repetir.
Nos devuelven a la dura realidad con ‘See You in Hell‘, una canción que provoca ganas de saltar y contestar con eso de: ‘Everyboys say yeaahhh…’. No creo equivocarme si afirmo que funcionará a las mil maravillas en directo. Tras el momento de euforia encontramos otra canción lenta y acústica, ‘Anyone but you‘. Y para terminar, ‘Wanna be rich‘. Una canción que anima a pasarlo bien. Me recordó a las canciones disco de los 70, en concreto a ‘Ma Baker’ de Boney M, tanto en el ritmo inicial como en el sonido algo retro, aunque acelerado y más cañero. Muy pegadiza y movida.
La primera pregunta que se me pasa por la cabeza tras escuchar el disco es, ¿por qué coño han repartido las canciones así?. ‘Welcome to the Freakshow‘ es un buen trabajo, pero a la hora de distribuir las canciones ¡la han cagado!. Hay cinco trallazos y seis bonitos medios tiempos, el problema es que los medios tiempos vienen tan seguidos, que no te da tiempo a despertar y se vuelve monótono. Aún así, en general es muy bueno, y encontramos a los Hinder que todos esperamos. Potentes en las canciones más movidas, suaves y emotivos en las lentas.
Mi consejo: pasa de todo lo que digo aquí, escucha el albúm, deja que el grupo te sorprenda, pasalo bien y entonces juzga por ti mismo.

Well, well… The first days of the year arrives with a damn cold weather, but also with the new LP from Hinder, ‘Welcome to the Freakshow‘, and this is an album that could make us feel a little bit warm.
This is their fourth album, and it was released on past 4h december, 2012, but you can listen to – ‘Save me‘ – their first single from august. It was released under Republic Records label, and it was produced by Cody Hanson himself (drums) and Marshall Dutton (guitar on Faktion). The running time is about 36′, and the band chose to put 11 tracks from a total of 30 songs already written. They also have to face the Austin Winkler (frontman) drug addiction during the recording process. As he tolds in an interview with Billboard, he did his part when he was passing through a very hard moment of addiction. Just after finish the work, he entered into a rehab program.
The album starts with ‘Save me‘, and as they usually made on another songs, it sounds heavy, groovy, and with a nice and catchy chorus. In the same way we find ‘Ladies Come First‘, but with some synth parts. Then comes the first slow one, ‘Shoulda Known Better‘, where we can listen to the Austin’s hoarse voice, all with a nice instrumental part and great piano arrangements. The final result is a elegant and romantic tune, intense and emotional, but no fussy at all. After that, we find ‘Freakshow‘, in the same line from their preview LP, ‘All American Nightmare‘ (2010). It have a really cool chorus, very catchy and heavy. It is a song that also have a very aggressive riffs.
Then we are in front of the cd matter, four slow songs, very nice all of them, but just right beside. The first one is ‘Talk to me‘, with country rhythm, and with a very cool vocals. It is a really nice one. Then follows ‘Get Me Away From You‘, which is also very emotional, and with a impressive acoustic guitar and piano arrangements. ‘It’s just me‘ could be the main radio-hit, and to clear this stage we found ‘I don’t wanna believe‘, that could be my favorite. It is moody and exciting at the same time, and with an in crescendo part that ends into a powerful climax on the chorus. It’s like the good sex: smooth, intense and letting you begging for more.
They return to the heavy path with ‘See You in Hell‘, a really groovy tune, that make you jump and scream ‘Everyboys say yeaahhh’ with them. I’m pretty sure that this could be a very good one in their gigs. After this euphoria moment we have another acoustic and slow one, ‘Anyone but you‘, and in the end, ‘Wanna be rich‘. This one makes you feel like party, and reminds me those old-disco songs from the 70’s, like ‘Ma Baker’ from Boney M. It sounds with that old taste, but faster and heavier. Very groovy and catchy too.
After listening the full cd, the first question for me should be ‘what the hell they chose that tracklisting’?. ‘Welcome to the Freakshow’ is a good work, but they screwed it a little bit with the running order. It have five bullets and five slow ones, the point is, the slow songs are right beside! and the listening remains monotonous. Even with that, we have the Hinder we want, powerful on the heavy songs, sweet and emotional on the slow ones.
My advice? Don’t trust anything you read on this review, listen the album, enjoy, and then judge for yourself.
