ENGLISH VERSION
It has come a long way since Diamond Dawn won a contest with the song ‘Standing As One’ and Frontiers put an eye on them, back on 2011. It’s been a long way in which they’ve grown up as musicians and have released their debut, Overdrive, that can compete with ‘Address The Nation’ from H.E.A.T., band with which they have been compared time after time. With a video –’Take Me Higher’- that scored 100,000 views in three weeks, we can’t neglect this band from Gothenburg, that points out to be the next big thing.
Drummer Effrain Larsson answered to our questions, helped by guitarists Jhonny Goransson and Olle Lindhall, as well as by keyboardist Niklas Arbro and submitted us their great love for Spain and their wishes to smash the hit lists worldwide.
How’s a Diamond Dawn like?
That is a very good question. A diamond dawn can be different things, first of all it can be the result of a discussion about what a high school band should be named. A diamond dawn also represents a silver lining and the dawn of a totally smashing day, maybe waking up next to a pretty girl!? A person that incarnates the spirit of diamond dawn is a person with a positive attitude that embraces the fun in life. It is a person filled with hope and will-power that aims straight for it’s goals without distraction. Anything is possible – especially if you work hard enough-, is the philosophy of a «diamond dawn».
After making an impact with ‘Standing As One’, you were reached by many labels, what made you decide for Frontiers?
Yes, we were. To be honest we didn’t have that much of a discussion whether we would sign with Frontiers Records before any of the other record labels. Sure, we had a good conversation and planned with one particular label just before Frontiers contacted us. In the end though, we were pretty much unified that Frontiers would be the best for us!
The video of ‘Take Me Higher’ reached 100,000 views in 3 weeks. How does it feel for a young band in their debut?
I’m pretty sure I don’t only speak for myself when I say that the 100’000 mark was one of the biggest moments of my life. Before we released the video I said that it would be sick if we reached 20’000, then you could understand how unreal it felt with 100’000 in three weeks.
First record and you just released your first video. There are some young Swedish bands that had waited until the second or the third for a video. How important do you consider the videos to deliver the message of Diamond Dawn? What do you think they can do for you?
When Frontiers told us they wanted us to release a music video along with the single, we felt quite proud. As you said, there aren’t that many band getting the opportunity to produce a music video this early (economic and other reasons), so of course it’s a big step! I would say that a music video today isn’t the same as it once was. But at the same time I think our music video helped us reach out to the public much more, which we hope our upcoming videos will do as well.
In the video of ‘Take Me Higher’ we find takes of what a day in a touring band might be. Which other interesting takes were gone on the editing? Any embarrassing moments while the filming we should know about?
Ah, yes, with the video we just wanted to show ourselves as a band, performing and doing what we love to do. We think we managed to capture the positive energy of our live gigs so we really dig the video and it’s really great that so many people seem to do so too! To be honest there weren’t really any embarrassing moments during the shoot, unfortunately. The most funny thing however was probably when we filmed at the real live gig in Gothenburg. Johan Carlén, the awesome director of the video, went on stage with us for a couple of songs to film. The stage was pretty small so during that time we kept moving into each other and also hitting Johan with our guitars and mic stands. Johan got some great shots and the video turned out great anyway so he probably isn’t mad with us for hitting him, still maybe it looked a bit funny to the audience. It certainly felt a bit weird afterwards!
You’ve been compared to H.E.A.T and we saw you talking to Eric Rivers and Jona Tee on Gothenburg after their concert in Sticky Fingers, on last November. What do you think about these comparisons and about these guys? Will we see you playing together sometime?
H.E.A.T is surely one of the bands I’ve listened to the most for a couple of years and it’s honorable to be compared with such a talented and appreciated band. To be perfectly clear though, our vision is not to be alike or a copy of H.E.A.T, which it seems like some people may think. They’re doing their stuff and we’re doing our stuff, we do however probably have lots of common influences and musical ideals. Mixed together we might just be a great team and treat for you guys out there who love melodic rock! Yes. At May 11th we will be playing together in Katrineholm, Sweden, which we look forward to a lot! Hopefully we’ll do some other dates together in the future.
If we check the title of your songs most of them refer to speed or to rush, still, you seem very quiet and nice guys on the promotional pictures. Are you wolves covered by lamb skin?
Haha well first of all, all is relative. Guess we’re lambs and wolves at the same time. We’re really nice, relaxed and humble boys and we love our mamas but if an eligible situation is provided we will be bas ass hulks in overdrive mode. That’s a simple way of putting it, you’re welcome to investigate the matter further if this only made you more interested!
«Our expectations are, to be honest, very high. Our hopes are that our name gets spread and known all over the world, therefore of course America and Asia are two big parts of it.»
One of the things that more catched me of the album was the beautiful keyboard work from Niklas. Where do his influences come from? The other thing was the awesome cover. What did you wanted to express with the artwork?
Niklas Arbro (keyboards): When I first heard the songs we were about to record there were some easier, simplier conceptish keyboards in the demo tracks (mostly Olle’s recordings) which I took as an inspiration before I changed, rearranged and over thought it to really make the chords, frases and lines ‘mine’. About influences I think it’s always difficult to point out exactly what inspires you. I mean, there is so much music out there in the world and you listen to so much everyday that you don’t choose, and whether you like a music genre or not there is always something from anything that you could take inspire from. So you always have a «toolkit» with stuff you hear and like, and mine might be filled with stuff from classical piano, jazz, 80’s rock, dubstep and everything between. A personal favourite us keyboardists between is Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), even though I don’t share his sound that much. But his way of playing is inspiring.
When I play I’m trying to make something new and unique, something others can get inspired and motivated by. Therefore I think it’s a good thing having a wide range of musical inspiration in terms of genres!
Jhonny Goransson (guitars): In all honesty, I don’t think we had a deeper meaning or artistic message to convey with the cover art when we began conceptualizing it. We just wanted something that looked cool, matched our identity and was fairly easy to implement. The initial idea was to show the logotype hammered into a simple stone wall, with a couple of visible cracks around the two D’s. A brilliant sketch artist named Sara Gullberg was later brought in to help us composite our vision into the actual cover. She came up with the idea of pushing the logotype through the wall with gleams of sunlight appearing through the cracks, which could perhaps be interpreted in various ways. In terms of analogies, the simplest way to look at it is that this album will hopefully be our ‘break-through’ record or something similar.
In our media we are particularly keen on ‘Into The Overdrive’, ‘California Rush’ and ‘Powergames’. What can you tell us about the writing process of these songs? And referring to all the lyrics, which are the topics that inspire you and move you?
Olle Lindhal (guitars): Those are really cool songs that I think turned out great! It’s interesting because I think ‘Powergames’ and ‘Into Overdrive’ were the very last two demos that I did for the album. Even though I’m not a keyboard player both songs started out with an idea for a keyboard riff. With ‘Powergames’ it was the opening riff and with ‘Into Overdrive’ it was the rhythmic melody that opens and returns throughout the song. The latter mentioned I did though come up with on a guitar, but then transferred it to keyboard. I think I played a hundred things over it on guitar before I finally had the whole intro done, there’s just so much you can do with a melody like that but I think I found the right combination.
Lyrics wise I just write the stuff that naturally come to mind, it definitely doesn’t have to be complicated. You know you get a feel of the vibe of the song and then you find a part where certain words seem to fit very well, hear the ‘Into Overdrive’ chorus for instance which is a typical example. I guess the stuff that inspires are life, love, loss, good and bad times simply. The most important thing that I always like to incorporate is a positive attitude, a vibe that makes the listener wanna get up and just do. I’m not looking to change people’s lives with my lyrics, I do however want to make people make the most of their days!
Jhonny: The writing process for this particular song was very iterative, a lot of components were reworked, refactored or even excluded in the end. The first couple of demos we produced are almost diametrically different to the one that ended up on the album.
Everything in this song stems from the main guitar riff which was the very first part I did for this song. I wanted to make something with a bit more edge and attitude, and I think the riff provides this very efficiently. I made a very rough demo at home that had a way more ‘bluesy feeling’ (and even a cowbell and a honky-tonk piano if I remember correctly) than the current version. Me and Michael then worked together on the rest of the instrumental arrangements and the lyrics. Alex came in during some of the last stages of the writing process to finalize all the vocal parts and arrangements. The song itself is perhaps the most guitar-heavy on the album, with various progressive elements that makes it a lot of fun to play!
«Diamond Dawn are going to take you higher because we believe in what we do, we have high ambitions & we’re working hard to fulfill them. We are just simply the best fucking rock band out there»
You’re releasing the record on Asia and on America. Which expectations do you have about these countries? Are you planning an European tour for 2013?
Our expectations are, to be honest, very high. Our hopes are that our name gets spread and known all over the world, therefore of course America and Asia are two big parts of it. Our aim is to work at a healthy tempo to slowly build a solid reputation, that’s probably the most healthy way too if you want to stick around. You can’t expect arenas on your first tour and so on. That said, you need to have ambition burning inside to keep moving forward, and that we definitely have. We can reveal that a small European Tour is on the planning table – more than that we can’t say for now though. Stay tuned!
In Spain we have been following you since you released Standing As One and there’s a lot of buzz about you. When are you coming???
We have felt your enormous support from Spain very well for a long time now (since the Standing As One-era, as you said) which always fills me up with pride when I think of it. All six of us are really excited and dreaming about getting to Spain to play for you and meet you guys down there. However, about that dream turning into reality I unfortunately can’t tell you more than read the answer on the question above!
Now it’s the time for addressing our audience and for explaining them why Diamond Dawn it’s going to take them higher than any band in the world.
Diamond Dawn are going to take you higher because we believe in what we do, we have high ambitions & we’re working hard to fulfill them. We are just simply the best fucking rock band out there for you who will provide you with a great show and a GOOD TIME! THANK YOU boys & girls for supporting us, we truly love you for doing it!
