No tenemos grandes expectativas…

ENGLISH VERSION

The veteran Italian band of melodic progressive hard rock Stamina visits our country to introduce their record ‘Perseverance’.

They come back with the hope of being welcomed as warmly as they were in their tour of 2012. We spoke to their songwriter and guitarist Luca Sellitto about how to make a good record of their genre, about their connection to Royal Hunt, and about the collaborations with Goran Edman and Nils Molin (Dynazty).

Where does the name Stamina come from?

Luca Sellitto: I named the band this way because we need stamina to play our kind of music, both physically and mentally. It’s not a genre where you can write a song just strumming a couple of chords. You need a good technique, harmony knowledge and other skills.

In your facebook, in the part of Interest in bands you mention “music, girls, and beer”. Is that the kind of music you like to write, the one inspired by these topics?

Hahah I don’t think beer has much influence on my songwriting.

When you speak about your influences, in your facebook, you say: “Every kind of GOOD music! It MUST be melodic, it MUST be well played, it MUST communicate something!! Would you say that’s the heart of Stamina, good music well played that communicates something?

I hope so, we always try to play as well as we can and I hope that we communicate something to the listeners.

«You need a good technique, harmony knowledge and other skills to play this genre»

On 2011, two of the original members left –the bassist and the singer-. What do you think these changes have brang to the band? As the singer is the soul of a band, which are the main differences between Jacopo DiDomenico and the previous band?

Unfortunately Jacopo is no longer our singer, since he’s no more available for touring. The new bassist, Lorenzo Zarone, fits very well in Stamina and our rhythm section is better now thanks to him and to the new drummer Enrico.

You’ve been a band since 2001, which are the changes you’ve experienced from the concept you had then about what you should be and what you think now you should be?

Well… when I listen to our first demos I laugh a lot. There were so many variations in the structure of the songs, so many influences that sometimes you couldn’t tell what kind of band we were. I tried to experiment a lot in the songwriting and I learned from my mistakes. Now we have a much more convincing sound and a good identity as melodic metal band, with some progressive and fusion influences.

Royal Hunt has collaborated with you in your second album and you opened for them in their European tour of 2012. Which are the things that bring you together? What have you learned from them? Are you collaborating again in the future?

Royal Hunt have been one of my favourite bands since I was a teenager, so I think it’s normal you can hear some of their influence in our songs. Touring with them was a great experience, we learned a lot from them about how to stay on stage, how to try to entertain the audience and how to be as professional as possible in every circumstance. I don’t know if we will cooperate with some of their members again in the future, I hope so… it would be nice.

You’ve recorded you third record, ‘Perseverance’, in which have collaborated musicians as Goran Edman and Nils Molin (Dynazty). How did these guys jump into the project and what can you say about the result?

They are some of my favourite singers, so I just sent them the stuff and invited them to sing. Fortunately, both liked the songs and accepted to feature on the album as special guests.

Your previous album it’s from 2009. Which evolution can we find in ‘Perseverance’? Which are the main topics and the biggest charms from this?

I think (and hope!) that with ‘Perseverance’ we improved the structure of the songs, which sound more efficient and catchy now. It’s an album with strong melodies which can catch the attention of the listener in a few seconds. There are a lot of intricate arrangements and solos too, but the songwriting is fluid and you don’t need to listen to the songs numerous times to keep them in mind.

You are touring Spain next week, but you are not coming with Jacopo but with a replacement. Which are your expectations about these shows? What are you going to offer to the audience?

We will have our former singer Giorgio Adamo on stage with us, who has also sung 4 songs on the new album ‘Perseverance’ as guest. We don’t expect much… We want to promote our new album ‘Perseverance’ and to come back to Spain, because we have such a great memory of our concerts in Madrid and Barcelona in 2012.

Now it’s your time to address to the audience in Spain. Why they shouldn’t miss the Spanish tour and why they should buy your record?

We will give 101% on stage and we just want that the Spanish people enjoy the show and have fun with us. We want make them smile, that’s all! J So everyone who’s in the mood to have fun shouldn’t miss!
