La emblemática formación brasileña Angra está de actualidad. No solo estrenarán un nuevo disco a principios del año que viene, sino que lo hacen con una renovada formación, y que cuenta con la presencia del no menos mítico Fabio Lione (Rhapsody, Vision Divine) al frente. ‘Secret Garden‘ es el título de este nuevo lanzamiento, un trabajo pre-producido por el reconocido productor Roy Z (Judas Priest, Bruce Dickinson, Halford), llevando la grabación y retoques finales a Suecia junto al también solicitado Jens Bogren (Kreator, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Dragonforce). Su primer adelanto ya lo pudimos probar hace unos días en forma de videoclip, pero para saber algo más de lo que nos tienen preparado, nos pusimos en contacto con el propio Lione, quien, en un tono muy alegre, nos demostró sentirse realmente emocionado con el proyecto.
1) Antes de nada muchas gracias por atendernos Fabio, ¿qué tal todo por ahí?, suponemos que hasta arriba con la promoción del disco nuevo…
[Entusiasmado] ¡Sí!, con un montón de cosas… Hay mucho que hacer, y en mi caso, al ser el único europeo, bueno, tengo que trabajar también en ello para Europa.
2) Me resulta imposible pasar por alto la cuestión sobre la nueva formación de Angra… ¿Cómo fue esta última temporada para Bruno y para ti?
[Al instante y emocionado] ¡Genial!, ya llevo dos años con ellos y va todo de maravilla. Con relación a Bruno, la verdad es que es un gran batería y un tío genial. Estoy seguro que mucha gente se llevará una sorpresa con él. Y sobre las nuevas canciones me gusta el detalle de que hayamos podido aportar algo todos, ¡ahora mismo somos un equipo de músicos y buenos amigos!

3) Tal como acabas de comentar hace un momento, ¿dirías que te afecta de alguna manera el vivir en otro país, o el hecho de cantar en otros grupos para mantener esta buena armonía de trabajo?
Bueno… sí que canto con mis otros grupos, pero la verdad es que me organizo bastante bien. Tenemos muchos conciertos y mucho que hacer, pero no hay ningún problema con los demás, además, al final soy yo el que decide lo que hacer, y si es el momento adecuado para hacerlo o no. También creo que es bueno que haya un europeo en el grupo y con experiencia en bandas como Kamelot, Rhapsody, Vision Divine, etc. Creo que [Angra] es más fuerte ahora, y que además tenemos muchos elementos nuevos en nuestra música.
4) Pasaron cuatro años entre ‘Aqua’ y este ‘Secret Garden’. ¿Cuanto tiempo os pasasteis trabajando en la composición?, ¿dirías que es un disco con mucho trabajo de fondo?
Sí… la banda decidió pasar dos semanas todos juntos en una isla en Brasil y podría decirse que ahí completamos el 70% de la composición, ¡fue una experiencia genial!. Luego, por supuesto, trabajamos muchísimo con distintas ideas y canciones, cada uno en su casa o en locales de ensayo. Finalmente pasamos también un tiempo en Suecia con Jens Bogren grabando y terminando todo.

5) ¿Qué más nos puedes contar de tus aportaciones personales?, ¿y Bruno?
Pues como te decía fue todo un trabajo en equipo. Hice mis líneas de voz, y propuse algunas ideas como en 5-6 canciones, Bruno también. Él hizo su contribución en ‘Final Light’. Me gusta pensar que cada uno estuvimos envueltos en el proceso y que el resultado es un disco muy potente y totalmente nuevo.
6) Hablando del tema, en ‘Newborn Me’ escuchamos una especie de viejo-nuevo sonido, cañero, moderno y también cercano al power metal. ¿Es esta la dirección que nos vamos a encontrar en el resto del disco?, ¿qué nos puedes decir de las nuevas canciones?
[Abstraído] Mmm, no… creo que el disco es bastante variado, y que cada canción es distinta a su manera. Algunas veces más «proggy», otras más power, heavy o incluso oscuro. ‘Newborn Me’ es una de mis favoritas, me alegra escuchar que digas eso de algo moderna, cañera y nueva. ¡¡ANGRA 2015!!
7) Precisamente fue la elegida como primer avance de ‘Secret Garden’, ¿queríais demostrar con ella que estamos ante unos Angra «renacidos», o no hay ningún doble sentido?
[Rotundo y eufórico] ESO ES, TAL CUAL!! Y creo que hay sido una decisión acertada, considerando también el concepto del disco y el estilo de la canción.

8) En dos canciones de ‘Secret garden’ también habéis trabajado con dos de las voces femeninas más populares de la escena metálica, Doro Pesch y Simone Simmons. ¿Cómo surgieron estas colaboraciones?
Bueno, conozco personalmente a Simone porque cantamos juntos muchas veces durante la gira de Kamelot del 2011. Me alegró mucho saber que quería formar parte. Es fantástica y una gran persona. Y lo mismo con miss Doro, es una buena amiga y ¡es absolutamente genial!! Estamos muy felices y orgullosos de tener sus fantásticas voces en nuestro disco.
9) ¿Cuando os podremos volver a ver de nuevo en España o por Europa? ¿Tenéis algún festival de verano ya cerrado?
Por ahora tenemos confirmado WACKEN y algunos conciertos/festivales en Italia. Estamos trabajando en ello, así que ya iremos informando.
10) El año pasado, y precisamente contigo como invitado, la banda dio un concierto en uno de los festivales más exclusivos y especiales que existe, el 70000 Tons of Metal, ¿qué tal fue aquella experiencia?
¡¡Totalmente fantástica!!! Aquel fue el primer concierto que dieron conmigo, y también su primer concierto desde hacía ya algún tiempo, creo que llevaban dos años sin tocar o algo así. La reacción de los fans fue genial, y la sensación de estar en el grupo también. Gracias a eso decidimos seguir adelante, y ahora tenemos un disco nuevo, planes de gira y muchas ideas en mente.

1) First of all, thank you for your time. How are you doing? I suppose that full of work with the promotion of your new album.
Yes.. a lot of things.. thanks!!! We have a lot to do.. and in this case.. as I’m the only european member of the band.. well, I have to do promotion for all Europe..
2) It’s impossible to avoid the question about the new lineup, how are Bruno and you integrating into the band?
Great!!! I mean.. it’s 2 years for me in the band.. and everything worked out great. Regarding Bruno, he’s an incredible drummer and a great guy. I really think that a lot of people will be surprised about him. And about the new cd!!! I like the fact that every member of the band gave his ideas and contribution on the new work. Regarding the composition process.. and that we are a team of good friends and musicians!!!
3) Did you think that the fact of living in another country, or singing in another bands, could affect you in the workflow process with Angra?
Well, I’m singing for my bands but I think I can manage my time and efforts well. We had many shows and many things to do and everything was good. I didn’t have any problems with my other bands and in the end I’m the one that can decide what has to be done in the right moment or not!!! I just think that is good that the band has 1 european member that has some experience with some other band (Kamelot, Rhapsody, Vision Divine, etc.), I believe that the band is more strong now and that we can have a lot of new elements and power in our music.
4) 4 years between ‘Aqua’ and ‘Secret Garden’. How much of this time did you spent working on composition? Is this the album that has had more previous work before recording it?
Yes, I mean, the band decide to stay 2 weeks all together in 1 island in Brasil and we can say that we made 70% of the composition process there, was a great experience!!! Then, of course we worked a lot more with ideas and songs, everyone at home or rehearsals rooms (before some gigs we tried something and we listen songs/ideas..). And in the end in Sweden the band spent sometime with Jens Bogren recording and finalizing all the things.
5) What about Bruno and your personal work on the composition?
I gave vocal lines and ideas to the band regarding 5/6 songs and Bruno too. He gave his contribution on the ‘Final Light’ song!!! I like to think that every member was involved in the composition process this time and the result is a strong, fresh new record!!!
6) In ‘Newborn Me’ we hear an old-new sound, powerful, modern, and a little bit closer to power metal. Is this the direction that we can hear along the new album? What can you tell us about the new songs?
Mmm no, I think the record is quite various and every song is different in a way. Sometimes more proggy, sometimes more power or heavy or darker. ‘Newborn Me’ is one of the song that I prefer in this record, great to hear that you found this song kind of modern, powerfull and a kind of new sound. ANGRA 2015!!!
7) ‘Newborn Me’ was the chosen one in order to advance ‘Secret Garden’, did you want to show that we are in front of a “new and reborn” Angra or there was nothing behind?
7) YES WE WANTED!!! AND I can also say that was the right choice, considering the concept of the record and the style of the song.
8) On two songs of ‘Secret garden’ you work together with two of the most popular female voices in metal, Doro Pesch and Simone Simmons. How do this collaboration began?
Well, personally I know Simone ‘cause I was singing with her many times during the Kamelot tour on 2011 and I was happy to know that she wanted to be part of the new cd. She is great and a very nice person. Same regarding miss Doro, she’s kind of friend with me and the band and she’s absolutely great!!! We are happy and proud to have this 2 great voices working in our new record.
9) When can we see you again in Spain/Europe? Any summer festival confirmed?
At the moment we have Wacken confirmed and some festivals/shows in Italy. We are working on that, let’s see.
10) On 2013, and with you as guest Singer, you played on one of the most particular festivals that exists, 70000 tons Of Metal. How was the experience?
Absolutely fantastic!!! That was the first show of the band with me and the first show of the band since a long time (I think the band staid something like almost 2 years without playing) The reaction of the fans was great and the feeling inside the band too.. that’s why we decide to go on and now we have a new record, new Tour to plan and many new ideas to realize.
11) Something more you want to add for the visitors of La Estadea?
