Ruta H.E.A.T: Knivsta – Estocolmo – Upplands Väsby

Ruta H.E.A.T: Knivsta - Estocolmo - Upplands Väsby

Ruta H.E.A.T: Knivsta - Estocolmo - Upplands Väsby

Ruta H.E.A.T: Knivsta - Estocolmo- Upplands Väsby

Ruta H.E.A.T: Knivsta - Estocolmo - Upplands Väsby

ENGLISH VERSION

H.E.A.T Route: Knivsta─Stockholm─Upplands Väsby

If three years ago we travelled to Upplands Väsby to show you the town of bands as Europe and H.E.A.T, now we aim higher: we visit three places of Sweden where we find traces of H.E.A.T: they’ve grown from tender chicken to become gamecocks and we want to celebrate it! We guide you through Knivsta to taste the beer of the singer, to Stockholm to buy their clothing, and to a record signing and to a concert in Upplands Väsby. Fasten your seatbelts and trevlig resa!

Knivsta

HADIRAJA BEER

Lately, the merch range has reached even drinks and any important band joins, for example, with tequila (Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe), or with beer (AC/DC, Europe, KISS, Iron Maiden). On 1st October 2013 were joined by the singer of H.E.A.T ─also known for being the winner of the Swedish Idol 2009─, Erik Grönwall, with the beer Hadiraja.

As told by the official web, www.hadiraja.com, the singer contacted his childhood friend of hometown Knivsta ─located 48 kilometres North of Stockholm─, Simon Vikström, head of the brewery Train Station, because he always dreamt of having his own brand of beer.

For naming it, he got inspired by Jönssonligan, some Swedish comedies of the early 80s, and, particularly, in the scene in which the character Dynamite─Harry tried to buy a beer in a Polish bar. Elbow to elbow, Grönwall and Vikström made tests until finding the magical formula. As it’s described in their web, it’s a lager “in which has been used varieties of malt, of Pilsner, of Pale, of Munich, of Carapils, and of barley flakes” and its flavour is “citric fruity with hop notes of tropical fruit and body of malting with notes of bread freshly baked, with a long fruity finish with a bitterness clear but balanced”. On April 2015, the regional newspaper Unt ─ in a report about local beers─, would describe it as a beer with “strange name, contemporary and well balanced with flavours of Swedish food”.

The promo pictures, co─starred by Grönwall, were taken by the photographer Gustaf Sandholm Andersson (H.E.A.T, Houston, Dynazty, Crashdiet) and he handed us this in exclusive for La Estadea, when we interviewed him (here).

Since then, Hadiraja has been featured in Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival 2014 and has been tasted in several parties. On the other hand, this September, Train Station and Grönwall will open a pub next to the train station and invite you to become a member here. The annual membership is 350 SEK (around 37 euros).

Hadiraja Festival

From this year on, as well as tasting the beer and going to the pub, could also be enjoyed a festival, Hadiraja Festival, that will take place in the Ängby Park of Knivsta, on 15th August. Even though most of the bill is oriented to pop, with Loreen ─winner of Eurocontest 2012, with Euphoria─ as head, there are some winks to rock, as Crucified Barbara and Erik Grönwall, unplugged, with his mate in H.E.A.T, the keyboardist Jona Tee. Tickets are for sale for 400 SEK (around 42 euros), in https://www.biljettforum.se

Further information in http://hadirajafestivalen.se

Distribution

Unluckily distribution of the beer it’s limited to Sweden and the nearest selling point, from Stockholm, is in the county of Upsala. However, as we have been informed by the press section of Systembolaget, it can be ordered and be picked up in any shop we choose. It takes 8 days and it’s paid on collection. If living in Sweden, it can be ordered in person or through the web of Systembolaget, www.systembolaget.se. If not, on travelling to Sweden, in person or by phone. For further information, email kundtjanst@systembolaget.se or call 0771-83 83 00

In the search of the hidden Hadiraja

We decide to go back on the track of last year, when in our way to Norway we stopped in Sweden and tried to buy Hadiraja, but, this time, we aren’t giving up easily. Following our natural insolence, we choose the most dangerous route: the one of visiting the nearest shop that has it on stock: the one in Knvista.

With the ebook of the biography of Rousseau on the bag ─inspired by the deep books that the singer of H.E.A.T always mentions on Instagram─ we head towards Stockholm C, where we catch a train towards Upsala, with three stops: Marsta, Knivsta and Upsala.

Maybe with the rascal spirit of a rockstar, we jump into the wagon with the hope that our Access carrd would be enough, but it isn’t. We are warned by the ticket collector that SL isn’t valid, but he sells us a single ticket. Then we focus on literature and on watching the Swedish forests.

The view of the forests relax even though writer Strindberg felt uncomfortable in the country during his studies on Upsala, so used to Stockholm.

After a 30 minutes trip, we arrive to our destination. We go down the underground and our first impression is that this town of 7000 inhabitants would be loved by Stephen King or Asa Larsson. It seems a sleeping town in which nothing happens, in which everyone remains silent and watching.

Streets are named after the main feature in them, ─as in Spanish towns─, like Pharmacy Street, etc. There is a big ICA, one library, banks, shops, restaurants and cafés. The most remarkable is the church of the 14th Century, St Stephen’s Church, and the great amount of National and International ice jockey players that have been born here.

After nosing around, we search for Gredelvyvagen,1, where it’s located the Systembolaget. We walk through Apothekesvagen for 5 minutes and there it is, between a convenience store of ICA and the pizzería City Pizza. With the rush of not knowing for sure if we’ll find it or if we’ll have to go to every Systembolaget of Upsala ─a city of 140.000 inhabitants, to 78 km of Stockholm─, we forget the nest and grab instead a box to make it to the till. Yeah, the beer it’s also located in the low part of the stand, so we have to bend our knees. Getting Hadiraja is a dirty job, but just 19,90 SEK (around 2 euros) each bottle! We keep them on the bag and go back to the station.

In the platform towards Stockholm C, we buy the ticket on the machine. Due to our impatience to come back to civilization, we take the first train and it stops in every corner. One of them is Upplands Väsby, the town of the rest of H.E.A.T. In two days we’ll be in Väsby Rock festival, enjoying it in full. Hadiraja will start our engines.

Stockholm

BENGANS

After the beer, we need a Swedish Edition of one of their records for the signing session, so we reach the centre of Stockholm and stop at Drottningatan street. On number 20 there’s the record shop Bengans (which we visited in our rock route of Stockholm, here), where can be bought their last two records ─Tearing Down The Walls and Live In London─ for 149 SEK (almost 16 euros) each. We put up with the second one as we were at that concert (review, here) and it would be extra special if they’d sign it for us.

SHOCK

We have the beer and the record, but to feel as true stars and because we envy their looks, we’d like to buy clothes where they do, so, we address to Shock. We go up Drottningatan until number 81 A.

We’ve seen Crash wearing the wifebeater with the logo of Shock and Grönwall, with unisex top tanks of the North American brand Unif , as the one of I Wish You Were Beer, I Don’ t Trust Me Either or BRB.

Upplands Väsby

With new clothes, brand new cd, and loads of Hadiraja, we catch the train in Stockholm C to the town of H.E.A.T, where on 17th and on 18th July is celebrated the third edition of Väsby Rock Festival, featuring bands as Danger Danger, W.A.S.P, Magnum, The Temple of Rock of Michael Schenker, Eclipse and, of course, H.E.A.T.

LIVING ON THE RUN LOCATIONS

First night, on Thursday, we book a room in Scandic Infra City (Kanalvagen, 10), to discover locations of the video of Living On The Run of Address The Nation, because on release, H.E.A.T told us it was filmed there.

As we came in, we notice the impressive hall, that reminds us more to a Japanese department store of Odaiba than to the hall of a hotel, with some escalators that lead to the top floor, which seems a business area.

The plot of the video happens in a living room, in a bedroom and in a bathroom. The band plays in a party, in which fun and flirting mingle.

Our investigations lead us to the Penthouse suite on 24 th floor, a room of 650 square metres with vintage candelabrum similar to the ones in the ballroom. In a scene we see the number 23 on the door ─which we guess is the room number─ a picture on the ceiling over guitarist Dave Dalone and an impressive staircase. There is a bathroom with a jacuzzi ─where the guests take a bath─ and another with a tub ─where Grönwall and Dalone do─.

The news page of the Town Hall explains that in the theatre of the penthouse is handled Vasby Melodifestival.

VASBY ROCK FESTIVAL

For us, the festival starts at 16.00 of Friday, after having enjoyed warm little pool of K floor ─similar to a jacuzzi, but without the bubbles─and having drank a very warm Hadiraja ─because we don’t have mini bar ─. Soon we start to notice the effects of the beer: a mingle of aphrodisiac and good vibes, as we start improvising in English and in Swedish and making blue jokes. The design reminds us to the one of Ikea and the flavour is very nice. Erik Grönwall export them to Spain, you are going to make loads of money! We have even stored some empty bottles as a souvenir as the Spanish fans have followed our quest in full detail. We are gonna make it till the end!

We walk to the area of the festival. The festival takes place in Vilunda Parken, to 5 minutes of our hotel, Scandic Upplands Väsby (Hotellvagen,1)─we’ve moved to be closer to the festival area─, and there are accomodated several people from the organization, as well as International journalists and some musicians. As a gossip, not far away there is Vasby Centrum, when H.E.A.T do their Shopping. A Pink bag for life with the logo of Centrum is a must in the festival, as we notice the second day.

We get our bracelets and give our flag of Spain ─organization requested flags to know how many different nationalities were coming ─. On Saturday we’ll see them on the walls of the hoarding, next to the Sweden Rock magazine promo and we’ll take pictures.

We cross the VIP zone, to catch a glimpse of any star and to discover the privileges that we enjoy. From this moment on we get hooked on pear cider Briska, 55 SEK (around 6 euros) per each. With our bracelet we get 2 drink tickets.

RECORD SIGNING

Due to the cancellation of Rated X, the concerts have been rescheduled in a way that plays on our side. Now we don’t have to choose between going to Ammunition or H.E.A.T and, moreover, we’ll be able to be even in the signing session of both.

We hardly got alive from the one of Ammunition. The singer, Age Nilssen, puts his hands in a way that, you have the impression that he’s grabbing my boobs. He does it in such a amusing way that we end cracking up. The poses for the last in the row are even better: one woman lies down over the table and they simulate they are having sex. If we’ve seen a rockstar with a passport to Las Vegas on stage, he reconfirms it in the meet&greet.

We make room for our spoiled brats of Väsby. Even having met then a million times we we are still nervous. Not even the team of Hadiraja and Briska chills us out and I’m particularly unable of letting go the hand of my mate. Being the third anniversary since we met in person, in Sweden ─Sommarkrysset, in Gronalund (see here)─, I’m more nervous than ever, guess because never feel confortable in scheduled meetings. That’s why I decide to break the ice with a tease. I throw the booklet of Live In London over the table and, being unable of holding out laughter, I order Gronwy ─as I call him affectionately, to distinguish between the other Eric─ to sign it.

Everything happens too fast and that makes it less special. Used to all that spoiling and those chats, we have to put up with the signing, the pictures and some words, all in a rush, and we can’t transmit all the greetings and affection we have been sent for them from Spain, and we forget to greet the tour manager. On my side, Jimmy greets me by the name─Jimmy you really know how to please a woman─ and Crash gabbles something in Spanish; on the one of my mate, Jona and Gronwy smile; Rivers pouts. We call by the finger Gustaf Sandholm Andersson ─yeah, exactly as in Girl Girls Girls video─to be behind the camera. Who could make it better than their official photographer, who had already greeted us in the VIP zone? And a very nice fellow, by the way.

After the pictures, it is time to land and to take our silvery pen. Over the table is such a mess of pens that I am seeking desperately ours when the guitarist gives me a serial killer look as to say “you won’t have what it takes to steal a pen from me!!”. No spoiling and, moreover, cockiness? Imagine who is nominated for a massive bubble gum sticked on the hair award;P Hey, it’s hard to be a rock’n’roller.

CONCERT OF VÄSBY ROCK FESTIVAL

Kieran Dargan it’s being master of ceremonies of the festival and being in charge of the introduction of H.E.A.T makes it romantic: if supporting Toto put them in the map in Sweden, it was Firefest which lifted them in the rest of Europe. Dargan refers to the dream made true, to the guys that were ice jockey players and that surely ─I add─ before that drawed their books while catching a glimpse of the planes towards Arlanda ─with any mother running after them, shouting “Jona Teee eat your Nutella sandwich…”─ to some of the most important stars in the rock kingdom.

We see in the first row some of the most devoted fans, from Poland, Switzerland or United Kindgom. Tonight the kids play at home and 90 minutes, would that be shown in their concept of the show?

During the soundcheck, we’ve thanked the spirit of bassist Jimmy Jay and that the keyboardist Jona Tee teased with the artists from Väsby All Stars not allowing him to check the keys, would that be on the show?

Once more the band jumps on stage with The Heat Is On by Glenn Frey. Jimmy Jay doesn’t disappoint, he works harder that we have seen him on the last three years, making a spectacular combo with the guitarist, something we have been looking for a ages. We also notice improvements on Crash, who stands up a few times on drums, and that looks more fiery, that’s the Crash that we want!! Rivers would pass on the rabies if he would bite someone and surely more than one on the first rows would be pleased.

We are seduced for a Grönwall less focused of moving non stop and more on the show; if he has to go down twice to lend the micro to fans, he does. We feel a more balanced band in attitude terms, but we still miss the chemistry between them, as if every of them will only focus on playing their part and not about the whole, as is they where pieces of a not syncronized engine.

One of the best moments of this tour, Touring Down The Walls, it’s being Jona Tee on keys with All The Nights, only accompanied by the voice. The nudity of the proposal highlight both; the good taste of Jona Tee on keyboards and the voice of Grönwall facing emotion. The singer has beaten himself in expressing feelings since we saw him in Bilbao last December and we thank him as it offers a more tridimensional performance. When he gets too aerobical, his vocal skills are shaded.

Even so, if there’s something we still don’t hear are the backing vocals, and we see Jona Tee and Jimmy Jay moving their lips. The singer doesn’t enjoy the best sound, but he isn’t off key.

The worst of the concert, as already happened in Bilbao, is the set list, which it’s almost the same: almost in full Tearing Down The Walls, only two songs of the first two albums ─Beg, Beg, Beg and Late Night Lady─and encores of Address The Nation and the Laughing At Tomorrow of Tearing Down The Walls. Just to mention a few, not at all Danger Road, 1000 Miles, We’re Going To Make It or even the side B of A Shot Of Redemption, one of the best songs they have ever written, Under Your Skin. The show bores you if you precisely don’t like the last one and you are not in mood ─fortunately we were in mood─.

Why is it the worst? Because it doesn’t allow them to develop in full their talent. Now, with just one guitarist, all the looks are over him. A good set list would allow him to wack off with the guitar and he just does a great job. He neither takes advantage of his personal charm for interacting with the singer, something that North American musicians excell at and that makes the audience participate, even when you are not addressing to her. An evolution towards Extreme would turn into legendary their performance; and they have the talent for that.

Considering the guitars and the keys are their strong points, we’ll go for a solo of each and we’d neglect the drums. Not just an intro, but something more experimental, that highlights the skills and the moving capacity. Maybe the exact word for that would be they should “únleash themselves more”;not going for the easy way but for standing hair on an end; not to reproduce the record, but to reinterpret it live: it’s not necessary that it sounds perfect ─it doesn’t need every intro, double backing vocals, ornaments of guitar, etc─ but that it sounds “alive”. We know that inside Eric Rivers there’s a fucking guitar hero that’s fighting to come out like Hulk; in the case of Jona, it’s just about letting him room and a chief role; a vocal tete a tete with Grönwall would be delicious. Let’s leave the looks of Crash for what they already are, an eye feast, and let’s allow him to grow up as a drummer, because he’d do it faster if he’d be considered overall as a musician. We adore when the bass goes on top and Jimmy runs off, when the axes compete for the attitude and for the complicity.

Though Living On The Run and Breaking The Silence are anthems for an encore, it’s quite nerve breaking that there’s no room for songs of the first period, as if the band had just fans from the third record on and they only want them to buy the last two, when in the first two they have such an anthems that reinvented live, now that they have more musical maturity, would make them more prestigious as musicians. H.E.A.T is a full, not a singer and not the last records; their success and development it’s a addition of the steps given since their debut.

Once more the concert seems to last too little time. At the end, they are given a flag of prodigal sons of Upplands Väsby and a giant box of Marabou, that they share with the crowd.

And certainly, what a deluxe chocolate box they are!: they leave us good taste in our mouths knowing that rock won’t die when bands as Europe, Bon Jovi, o Def Leppard abdicate.
