Los británicos liderados por el cantante Lord Zion y la bajista Vikki Spit advertían en su debut que no nos harían daño pero que no nos desharíamos fácilmente de ellos. Vuelven con su segundo disco, tan traviesos como siempre, pero más rítmicos y cañeros, bajo la supervisión de Chris Tsangarides. En su segunda entrevista para La Estadea, Lord Zion nos ilustró sobre sus planes de conquista mundial, su incursión en el mundo del cine, su nuevo vídeo, y el papel de Vikki como icono.
Bienvenidos de regreso a La Estadea. Os entrevistamos en 2008, cuando estrenasteis vuestro debut. Nos contasteis entonces que para triunfar como banda nada más tiene que ser importante para ti o tiene que dar sentido a tu vida. ¿Seguís pensando lo mismo? ¿Creéis que hay demasiada gente en el mundo de la música con una actitud vaga y pija, que no entiende de qué va esto?
Gracias por tenerme de vuelta, siempre es un placer hablar contigo. Sigo pensando lo que dije en 2008, creo que incluso con más convicción. Nuestro viaje con el primer disco no fue muy agradable y nos dejaron tirados un montón de gente. Fue necesaria fuerza y determinación para levantarse y recomenzar. Limpiamos el armario de los malgastadores y pactamos que todos los que aparecieran en nuestro camino serían erradicados. Así es cómo hacemos ahora las cosas y con “Normalityville Horror” está funcionando.
Vuestro primer single fue Sex,Drugs&Heavy Metal y el nuevo del nuevo disco es Zero To Sixty. Según vuestra opinión, ¿la vida de un músico sólo puede llevar a la demencia, si no se maneja de la forma adecuada?
¡Creo que para estar en el mundo de la música has de ser un poco demente! Ciertamente, si no lo eres cuando comienzas, te convertirás poco después. Está menos relacionado con el estilo de vida que con todas las mentiras que lo rodean. La forma en la que conduzco mi vida es sencilla: no miento. No prometo lo que no puedo cumplir. Si todas las personas en este negocio tuviesen la misma política, las cosas irían mejor y en esas bandas conservarían su cordura intacta durante bastante más tiempo. No hay nada peor que ser mentido las 24 horas del día durante 7 días a la semana.
Llevamos varios años con una terrible crisis económica y la gente se lo está pensando dos veces antes de gastar su dinero en un concierto. Refiriéndoos a vuestra experiencia, ¿ha cambiado eso la forma en la que la audiencia se acerca a vosotros en los conciertos? ¿Ha cambiado eso vuestra forma de comportaros?
En los últimos años las audiencias han descendido. Como ha caído la venta de discos, el precio de las entradas ha subido, por lo que los que van a los conciertos –que tienen menos dinero por las condiciones de la economía- tienen que tomar decisiones difíciles. Nuestra respuesta a eso es tocar menos, lo que aumenta la demanda y tratamos de dar más en nuestros conciertos para rentabilizar cada penique. Hay muchas ofertas de ocio gratis hoy en día, incluyendo internet. Toda la industria del entretenimiento está cambiando mucho, no sólo la música, por lo que es importante para las bandas que tengan sus dedos en diferentes pasteles para que alcancen una audiencia más amplia.
El video de ‘Zero To Sixty’ es muy divertido, con vosotros interpretando a los personajes de Los Jóvenes. ¿De dónde os vino la idea? ¿Cómo se realizó el casting para saber quién encajaba en cada personaje? ¿Y qué piensan los miembros de Anvil de la recreación?
La idea vino de un sueño loco que tuve un día, con nosotros como Los Jóvenes interpretando la historia de la película de Anvil. ¿Cómo no podría funcionar? Por supuesto, tener a una de las estrellas de la película en el vídeo también ayudó (Chris Tsangarides) y también tener la misma localización.
Elegir el casting fue sencillo. Cuando era niño solía imitar a Rick; Vikki TENÍA que ser Vyvyan (si la conocieras, entenderías por qué); Gilez tiene ese aire moreno de Mike por lo que eso hizo que a Rob le quedara ser el hippy.
Enviamos una copia del video a Lips de Anvil quien respondió que era “jodidamente brillante”, por lo que hicimos un buen trabajo.
Vuestros videos son muy alternativos pero muy estilosos y estéticamente impecables. ¿Cómo conseguís la mezcla perfecta?
Cuando grabas videos como los nuestros, tienes que asegurarte de que equilibras lo guay con lo tonto. No somos una banda de broma y no queremos parecer una, por lo que la regla es: si somos muy estúpidos en un sentido, tenemos que ser muy guays en el otro. Estábamos haciendo el tonto en el apartado de la actuación de Los Jóvenes por lo que teníamos que parecer maravillosos en la parte de la actuación. Creo que salió bastante bien.
El album ‘We Won’t Hurt You (But We Won’t Go Away)’ era más glam rock y ‘Normalityville Horror’ es más heavy metal. ¿Tiene este cambio alguna relación con tener un nuevo guitarrista o existen otras razones detrás de ello?
No, fue solo un feliz accidente. Si escuchas los primeros EP’s que hicimos, eran más rítmicos que el disco “We Won’t Hurt You”. El guitarrista de ese disco tenía otro tipo de estilo a la hora de tocar y su ritmo no era su punto fuerte, por lo que nos adaptamos un poco para que encajara. No era nosotros del todo y aunque pienso que hicimos un gran disco, podía haber sido mejor.
Por lo que cuando vino el tiempo de escribir “Normalityville Horror”, era importante que fuera más rítmico y más duro. Afortunadamente, el anterior guitarrista hizo algo que nos obligó a echarle, por lo que eso nos permitió buscar un guitarrista que encajara más en la música que escribimos.
Algunas bandas encuentran su sonido directamente, a otras les lleva tiempo de experimentación. Eso es lo que hicimos. No nos mostramos desarrollados del todo, pero ahora que sabemos lo que somos, podemos empezar a construir sobre eso.
Tenéis al nominado a un Grammy Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Anvil, Gary Moore, Angra, Helloween, Yngwie Malmsteen) produciendo vuestro disco y sois el primer lanzamiento de su nuevo sello, Dark Lord. ¿Cómo acabasteis juntos y qué podemos esperar de esta colaboración? ¿Es una gran responsabilidad ser el primer lanzamiento de un sello?
Vi a CT en la película de Anvil y pensé que parecía un tío majo. Le contacté, hablamos un poco y nos reunimos. Me aseguró que podia ayudarnos a definir el sonido SPiT LiKE THiS, y le creímos y nos lo proporcionó.
Trabajar con él en la grabación fue todo un placer. No hubo ningún momento de tensión ni berrinche de divo ni explosión de ego. Estaba tan contento con toda la experiencia (estuve allí durante todo el proceso, incluyendo el de las mezclas) que me fastidió cuando se acabó. Presentí que no era el final de la historia…
… Unos meses después, CT se puso en contacto para decirnos que estaba trabajando para montar un sello y que estaría interesado en que firmáramos con él. ¡DIABLOS, POR SUPUESTO QUE SÍ! Le llevó un tiempo al sello para formarse, pero una vez que lo estuvo, no podíamos esperar para ser los primeros en firmar.
Siendo el primer lanzamiento, la responsabilidad reposa más en el sello que en nosotros. Haremos todo lo que podamos para apoyar y para promocionar el lanzamiento pero es el sello el que nos vende, no somos nosotros los que vendemos a la compañía. Son una gran compañía con la que trabajar, muy agradables, y lo estoy disfrutando mucho. ¡Que reinen durante muchos años!
Tenéis una canción llamada ‘Very Very Good At Being Bad’ (Somos buenísimos siendo malos), pero parecéis muy buenos chicos, sólo que seguís vuestro propio camino.
El término “malo” se refiere menos a ser perverso que a portarse mal. Portarme mal es algo que se me da muy bien. Como dice esta línea en la canción : “There’s too much fun to be had / When you’re very very good at being bad”(Te lo pasas muy bien/cuando eres buenísimo siendo travieso).
Vais a hacer un cameo en la película ‘Zombie Women of Satan 2’ y vais a protagonizar ‘Blaze of Gory’ –la cuál estaréis rodando en Noruega en enero 2013- y habéis escrito música para otras películas. ¿Qué os ha interesado de estos proyectos? ¿Va a ser el cine otra de las características definitorias de la banda?
¡Definitivamente! De hecho, estoy trabajando en un proyecto que anunciaré próximamente que realzará nuestro estatus, nuestra misión y nuestros motivos. Como he mencionado previamente, si eres una banda en 2013, si quieres durar, has de mirar más allá de los límites musicales. Siempre quiero escribir y grabar música –está en mis huesos- pero la gente necesita saber que existo para encontrar la música para escuchar mis mensajes. Hacer películas es otra parte del espectro del entretenimiento que me interesa mucho, por lo que parece que una opción natural y, en el proceso, me conocerá más gente y por lo tanto escucharán las canciones.
Tenéis una marca de camisetas llamada Smell Your Mum, que ahora ha incorporado otros productos –postales, bolsas, etc-, con frases provocativas. ¿Ahora mismo cuáles son las frases que más se están vendiendo? ¿Hay alguna frase que os gustaría decir a alguna persona con la que habéis trabajado?
Para responder a la última parte de la pregunta: ¡sí, un montón de ellas! Son demasiadas como para mencionarlas aquí. Tenemos muchos diseños que se venden muy bien. Algunos son perennes, otros de temporada, otros tienen una vida más corta. Realmente me gusta la parodia de Lord Kitchener que dice “STOP Being A Cunt” (deja de ser un cabrón). Me hace reír cada vez que la veo.
Estáis de gira. ¿Qué cambios vamos a notar en estos nuevos conciertos? ¿Hay países en los que estáis tocando por primera vez?
Vamos a tocar la mayoría de nuestro nuevo disco, pero también vamos a reintroducir canciones que han estado fuera del set list, en algunos casos, durante años y años. El tener a un relativamente nuevo guitarrista significa que podemos tocar cosas que no podíamos con el otro chico. Nuestra intención es girar a lo largo y a lo ancho. Estamos excitados acerca de tocar en Finlandia por primera vez y lo haremos muy pronto. Además de a Europa, nos encantaría llegar a Asia, a USA y a Canadá.
Tocásteis en el Hard Rock Hell en Ibiza en 2010. ¿Cómo resultó la experiencia de tocar en España? ¿Cuándo volvéis?
¡También hemos tocado este año! Tocar en Ibiza es extraño -¡no es una isla de rock! Pero todos los rockeros de Reino Unido traen al sol sus palidísimos culos, se ponen rojos, se ponen como una cuba, y rockean. Es muy divertido. Nos encantaría hacer un tour en el más propio sentido del término por España. Nuestro disco saldrá en Europa a principios de 2013 (acaba de salir en Reino Unido ahora mismo) por lo que esperamos que eso conduzca a la conquista española.
En un mundo del rock todavía sexista donde a las mujeres se les sigue viendo como groupies o como las novias de los de las bandas, ¿piensas que Vikki representa un nuevo modelo?
Rotundamente sí. Vikki se fijaba en Beki Bondage de Vice Squad cuando era una adolescente. De hecho, solía cuidar las mascotas de Beki cuando se iban de gira. Igual que Beki le enseñó a la joven Vikki que podías triunfar en el rock’n’roll, Vikki está enseñando a la nueva generación que puedes ser una artista sexy y con carácter, mientras que mantienes tu dignidad y tu credibilidad. Hay mucho ahí a lo que la gente puede mirar.

The British led by the singer Lord Zion and the bassist Vikki Spit warned on their debut that they won’t hurt us but that we wouldn’t get rid of them easily. They return with their second record, as naughty as always, but more rhythmic and louder, under the supervision of Chris Tsangarides. In their second interview with La Estadea, Lord Zion shares their plans to conquer the world, their adventures on the screen, their new video, and Vikki’s role as an icon.
Welcome back to La Estadea. We’ve interviewed you in 2008, when you released your debut. You told us then that to succeed as a band there’s nothing else that has to be important or that has to give sense to your life. Do you still feel the same? Do you think there are too many people on music business with a posh and lazy attitude, don’t understanding what this is all about?
Thanks for having me back – always a pleasure to talk to you. And I still stand by what I said in 2008. If anything, more so. Our journey with the first album didn’t turn out to be altogether happy and we were let down by a lot of people. It took strength and determination to stand up and do it all again. We cleared out the closet of the timewasters and made a pact that, anyone that got in our way, would simply be eradicated. That is how we now do things and, so far with “Normalityville Horror”, it is working.
Your first single was ¡Sex,Drugs & Heavy Metal’ and the new one of the new album is ‘Zero To Sixty’. In your opinion, the life of a musician can only lead to insanity, if not properly handled?
I think that to be in the music business you need to be a bit insane! Certainly, if you aren’t to begin with, you soon will be. It is less to do with the lifestyle though and more to do with the bullshit. The way I live my life is simple: I don’t lie. I don’t promise things I cannot deliver. If everyone in the business had the same policy, it would run much smoother and those in bands would be able to keep their sanity intact just a little bit longer. There’s not much worse than being lied to 24/7.
We are going through a terrible economic crisis for some years now and people are thinking twice before spending their money in a concert. In your experience, has that changed the approach of the audience in your concerts? Has that changed your attitude?
Audiences have dropped off in the last couple of years. As record sales have fallen, ticket prices have gone up, so gig-goers – who have less money due to the economy – have to make tough choices. Our answer to that is to play less which increases demand plus we try and put more into our shows to offer bang for their buck! There are so many distractions that are free these days too – the internet being one of them. The whole entertainment industry is going through a massive change, not just music, so it is important for people in bands to have their fingers in different pies to reach a wider audience.
The video of ¡Zero To Sixty¡ it’s very fun, with you playing the characters of The Young Ones. Where did the idea come from? How was the cast made to know which character fitted every member? And what do the members of Anvil think about the recreation?
The idea was just a mad dream I had one day. Us, as The Young Ones, acting out the story from the Anvil movie. How could that not work?! Of course, being able to have one of the “stars” of the movie in the video helped (Chris Tsangarides) and also the same location.
The cast choices were easy. I used to do “Rick” impressions as a kid; Vikki HAD to be “Vyvyan” (if you knew her, you would know why); Gilez has that swarthy “Mike” thing going on so that left Rob having to be the hippy!
We sent a copy of the video to Lips in Anvil who came back and said it was “Fucking brilliant” so, job done!
Your videos are very alternative but very stylish and aesthetically impeccable. How do you get the perfect mix?
When you do videos like we do, you have to make sure that you balance the daft stuff with the cool stuff. We aren’t a joke band and don’t want to come across as one so the rule is this: as stupid as we go in one direction, we must go equally as far in the opposite direction. We were acting and looking dumb in the “Young Ones” bit of our “Zero To Sixty” video so we had to look amazing in the performance bit. I think it worked well.
‘We Won’t Hurt You (But We Won’t Go Away)’ album was more glam rock and ‘Normalityville Horror’ is more heavy metal. Has this change anything to do with having a new guitar player or are there any other reasons after it?
No, that is just a happy accident. If you listen to the early EP’s we did, they were much more rhythmic than the “We Won’t Hurt You” album. The guitar player on that album was a different style of player and his rhythm wasn’t his h5 suit, so we adapted slightly to accommodate that. It wasn’t entirely “us” though and, although I think we did a great album, it could have been better.
So, when we came to write “Normalityville Horror”, it was important that it was tighter and more rhythmic. Luckily, the old guitar player did something that forced us to sack him which gave us the opportunity to look for a guitarist that better suited the music we wrote.
Some bands find their sound straight away, other bands take their time experimenting en route. That’s what we did. We didn’t appear fully formed but, now we know what we are, we can build on that.
You have Grammy nominated Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Anvil, Gary Moore, Angra, Helloween, Yngwie Malmsteen) producing the album and you are the first release of his new label, Dark Lord. How did you come together and what can we expect from this collaboration? Is it a big responsibility to be the first release from a label?
I saw CT in the Anvil movie and thought he seemed like a nice bloke. I made contact with him, chatted a bit then had a meeting with him. He assured me that he could help us define the SPiT LiKE THiS sound, we trusted him and he delivered. Working with him on the recording was a total pleasure. There wasn’t one tense moment or diva strop or ego trip. I was so happy with the whole experience (I was there throughout the whole thing, including the mixing) that I was gutted when it was over. I had a feeling though that it wasn’t the end of the story…
…Fast forward a couple of months, CT got in touch to say that he was working on putting a label together and would we be interested in being signed to it. HELL YEAH! It took a long time for the label to get formed but, once it was, we couldn’t wait to be the first signings.
Being the first release, the responsibility now lies more with the label than with us. We will do whatever we can to support and promote the release but it is the label that is selling us, not us selling the label. They are a great label to work with though, very personable, and I am enjoying it immensely. Long may it reign!
you have a song called ‘Very Very Good At Being Bad’, but you seem very good guys, only that you follow your own path.
The “bad” in question is less about being evil and more about misbehaviour! That is something I quite excel in. As the line in the song says, “There’s too much fun to be had / When you’re very very good at being bad”.
You are making a cameo on the film ‘Zombie Women of Satan 2’ and starring on ‘Blaze of Gory’ –filming on Norway on January 2013- and wrote music for other films. What interested you of these projects? Is cinema going to be another of the defining characteristics of the band?
Definitely! In fact, I am working on a project right now that I will be announcing soon which will further enhance our status, our mission, our motives. As I mentioned earlier, if you are in a band in 2013, you have to look beyond the musical boundaries if you want longevity. I always want to write and record music – it is in my bones – but people need to know I exist to find the music to hear my messages. Doing movies is another part of the entertainment spectrum that greatly interests me so it seems a natural fit and, in the process, more people will get to know me and therefore hear the tunes!
You have the t-shirt brand Smell Your Mum, now including other products –postcards, tote bags, etc-, with provocative phrases. Which are the best-selling phrases right now? Is there any phrase you’d like to say to any person you have worked with?
To answer the last part of that question first: yes, plenty! Way too many to list here! We have so many designs that sell really well. Some are perennial, others are seasonal, others have a shorter shelf-life. I really enjoy the Lord Kitchener parody that says “STOP Being A Cunt”. Makes me laugh every time I see it.
You’re on tour. Which changes are we going to notice on these new shows? Are there countries on which you are playing for the first time?
We are playing most of the new album on the tour, but we are also re-introducing some songs that have been out of the set, in some cases, for years and years. Having our (relatively) new guitar player means that we can play stuff that we couldn’t do with the old guy.
Our intention is to tour long and wide. We are excited to be playing Finland for the first time very soon. Beyond Europe though, we would really love to get to Asia, USA and Canada.
You played in Hard Rock Hell in Ibiza on 2010. How was the experience of playing on Spain? When are you we coming back?
We also played it this year! Playing in Ibiza is odd – it’s not a rock island! But, all the rockers from the UK get their pasty white butts out to the sun, go red, get pissed and rock out! It’s great fun. We would love to do a proper tour of Spain though. Our album will be out in Europe early 2013 (it is out in the UK right now) so we hope that will lead to a Spanish conquest!
In a still sexist rock world where women are still seen as no more than the groupies or the girlfriends of the band members, do you think that Vikki represents a new role model?
Absolutely. Vikki looked up to Beki Bondage from Vice Squad as a teenager. In fact, she used to look after Beki’s pets when they went on tour! As Beki showed a young Vikki that you could succeed in rock n roll, Vikki is showing the next generation that you can be a feisty, sexy performer, whilst maintaining your dignity and credibility. There is a lot there for people to look up to.
