Ya han llegado los calores veraniegos y Reckless Love lo han sentido antes que nadie. ‘Hot’ es el adelanto del álbum, que se publica en septiembre, y en su vídeo, Olliver Herman (ex Crashdiet) se quita la camiseta de puro sofocón. El frontman del grupo finés no se desnudó literalmente para nosotros –aunque a las lectoras de La Estadea no les hubiera disgustado-, pero nos dejó bien claros la filosofía del grupo y sus planes de futuro, entre los que incluyen tocar en el Rockfest (Madrid) el 29 de octubre.
¿Qué es el rock para vosotros: sólo música o una forma de vida?
Se sobreentiende que es un estilo de vida. Es más que eso, es como hueles y saboreas. Es cómo vives y mueres.
En vuestra biografía os definís como el antídoto para la escena musical actual donde todo parece ‘demasiado soso, oscuro y serio’. ¿Qué os hace pensar que la escena de rock es así? Ahora el rock nórdico es una garantía de calidad, ¿cuáles son los ingredientes de vuestra fórmula curativa, comparados a otras bandas nórdicas y a la aburrida escena rock?
Sí, realmente estamos de acuerdo con esa afirmación. Casi todo lo que musicalmente hay en el mundo del rock, desde el Apocalipsis del hair metal de los 80, ha sido dominado por un tono soso y triste. Muchas bandas han intentado escribir canciones fiesteras que celebran los buenos tiempos pero pocos han triunfado.
La mayoría solo han conseguido sonar agresivos y heavies. Muchas bandas han creado grandes canciones, pero debido al tono sombrío que tenía la gente ninguna ha destacado. Hasta ahora. Hemos triunfado en nuestro camino, sobre todo porque tuvimos las pelotas de sonar diferentes a otros: felices, pletóricos, y movidos por la fiesta. Realmente estamos ahí fuera para pasárnoslo bien y para el espectáculo. No entiendo por qué alguien querría gastar el dinero que tanto le ha costado ganar así como su tiempo libre en un show donde alguien se quejara sobre lo miserable que es la vida. ¡No es miserable, es maravillosa y sólo vives una vez, por lo que disfrútala! ¡Ya!
Os cambiasteis el nombre de Reckless Life a Reckless Love. ¿Por qué motivo? Comenzasteis tocando versiones de Guns’N’Roses. ¿Seguís tocándolas en vivo?
Comenzamos como una banda de versiones de GnR y, en la misma línea, nos bautizamos por una canción de GnR Lies. Sin embargo, una vez que comenzamos a escribir canciones propias sentimos que necesitábamos un nombre propio. Nos encantaba Reckless, por lo que decidimos mantenerlo y reemplazar la palabra Life con algo más importante que la vida: Love (el amor).
Nacisteis en 2001, hace una década. ¿Qué cambios habéis experimentado durante ese período? Hemos notado una gran evolución desde vuestros eps a vuestros lps.
Mucha. Tuvimos dos baterías antes de Hessu y por supuesto nos hemos desarrollado como músicos y compositores. Además, también hemos intentado desarrollar nuestro propio sonido; un sonido que honrara a nuestros ídolos de la mejor forma posible, pero sin copiarlos.
Olliver, en 2008 se te presentó como el nuevo cantante de Crashdiet –y corrígeme si me equivoco- seguías en Reckless Love, es decir, compaginabas ambas bandas. ¿Qué te impulsó a decidirte por Reckless Love?
Sí, estás en lo cierto. Fue una decisión precipitada por ambas partes, por Crashdiet y por mí. Son una banda con una historia triste y así se supone que es cómo deben sonar. Pero cuando piensas en mí, piensas en un tipo fiestero que no puede parar de sonreír sobre el escenario. Era extraño. No podía fingir que estaba cabreado. Quiero Metal Feliz y así es Reckless Love. En mi humilde opinión, Reckless Love también tiene mejores canciones y músicos, jeje.
Después de cuatro eps y girar incesantemente, Universal os echó el ojo. Considerando que sois la segunda banda de glam rock que en una década firma con una discográfica importante, ¿podéis contarnos cómo sucedió?
En realidad Universal Music nos hizo una oferta antes de que me uniera al CD; de todas formas, todavía no estábamos preparados. Sentíamos que todavía no teníamos canciones lo bastante fuertes y no nos parecía adecuado. Queríamos esperar. Lo hicimos y conseguimos un contrato editorial, que junto a las canciones pegadizas fue nuestro ticket para conseguir un contrato discográfico. Mientras tanto perfeccionamos nuestro arte y escribimos la mayoría de nuestro álbum de debut.
Echando un vistazo a vuestro vídeo de One More Time –de vuestro primer álbum- parece que os lo pasásteis muy bien durante la grabación. ¿De dónde sacásteis las ideas?
Todas nuestras ideas están inspiradas en nuestra vida. Pepe compone la mayoría de la música y yo escribo las letras. Todas las letras tienen elementos de verdad en ellas. ¡Seguro que a veces exagero un poco, pero así es como cuentas una buena historia!
Según el estereotipo, los escandinavos son muy fríos, pero si hemos de creernos vuestras letras, estáis más en celo que la discografía completa de Whitesnake. ¿Sois escandinavos atípicos? ¿Deberían encerrar los padres a sus hijas cuando llegáis a la ciudad?
La frialdad y oscuridad escandinava son sólo una gran estrategia de marketing. Claro que el invierno es frío y oscuro, pero en la oscuridad también hay muchas grandes formas de divertirse. Incluso más, ¡cuando se va el invierno el verano que viene es mucho más intenso que en cualquier otra parte! El sol nunca se pone. ¡Puedes broncearte al anochecer! Añadele en la cúspide a las altas y rubias chicas escandinavas y te encuentras en la California actual. ¿Puedes imaginar a alguien que se cabreara aquí? ¡Yo tampoco!
En Finlandia –vuestro país- os va muy bien, con muchos conciertos y nominaciones a premios, ¿en cambio, cómo van vuestros planes de dominación mundial. El año pasado girásteis por Reino Unido, Japón, e Italia. ¿Vais a girar por Europa en 2012?
Sí. Vamos a ir de gira mundial y vamos a empezar este año, ¡desde ESPAÑA! También estamos funcionando muy bien en Reino Unido, por lo que cubriremos la zona de Noviembre a Diciembre. Cuando eras miembro of Crashdiet giraste por España. ¿Qué recuerdas de entonces? ¿Qué opinas de la audiencia española? ¿Cómo crees que acogería a Reckless Love?
Tengo recuerdos realmente buenos. Me encantó venir de gira a España. ¡Los fans españoles son fanáticos y locos! Creo que a España le encantarán Reckless Love porque a la gente española le encanta divertirse e irse de fiesta… a nosotros también, ¡y proporcionamos la mejor banda sonora para ello!
Lanzáis nuevo disco en septiembre. Si escuchamos vuestro primer single, Hot, parece que váis a seguir los pasos de vuestro debut. ¿Es así o van a sobrevolar más influencias, aparte de Def Leppard, Van Halen, Poison y KISS? ¿Hay alguna canción que va a dejarnos sin aliento?
Creo que todo el nuevo disco nos dejará sin aliento: he estado escuchando los las primeras remezclas y yo mismo estoy flipado… Va a ser más duro que el primero, las canciones son super pegadizas y todo el concepto es muy ambicioso. Queríamos refrescar el sonido glam de los 80, actualizarlo. Nos hemos dejado influenciar por las canciones de pop modernas, como las bandas de metal hicieron en los ochenta. Creo que dimos en el clavo en eso también.¡Puedes escuchar ecos a Lady Gaga y a Katy Perry! Sin embargo, sigue sonando como Reckless Love y hay canciones más heavies que en el debut. Va a ser puro Metal Feliz.

Summer has come and Reckless Love have noticed before anyone. Hot it’s the first single of the new album, released in September, and in its video, Olliver Herman (ex Crashdiet) takes out his tee shirt in getting hot flushes. The frontman of the Finnish band didn’t strip literally for us –not that the female readers of La Estadea would have been upset about it-, but informed us in deep about the band’s philosophy and their future plans, between them, playing in Rockfest (Madrid) 29 th October.
What’s rock for you: just music or a way of life?
A way of life, is an understatement. It’s more than that, it’s the way you smell n taste. It’s way you live n die.
In your biography you define yourselves as the antidote for today’s rock scene where everything seems “too dull, dark and serious”. What makes you think the rock scene it’s like that? Now the Nordic Rock it’s a tag for quality, which are the ingredients of your healing formula, compared to other Nordic bands and to the boring rock scene?
Yes, we certainly do. Nearly everything in rock Music all over the world, since the apocalypse of 80’s hair metal, has been dominated by a really dull and sad undertone. Many bands have tried to write party songs that celebrate the goodtimes but only few have really succeeded.
Most bands have only managed to sound aggressive and heavy. Many bands have produced good quality songs but because of the dark undertone everyone had nothing has really stood out from the rest of them. Until now. We’ve succeeded very well everywhere where we have gone, mostly because we’ve had the balls to sound different from the others. Happy, joyful, energetic and party driven. We are truly out there for goodtimes and entertainment. I don’t see why anyone would like to spend their hard earned money and valuable free time for a show where someone comes up onstage whining how miserable life is… It’s not miserable. It’s great and you only live once so enjoy it. Now!!!
You changed your name from Reckless Life to Reckless Love. What was the reason after that? You started playing Guns’N’Roses covers. Do you still play any live?
We started out as a cover band playing Guns’N’Roses songs n in that fashion we named ourselves after the song on GnR Lies. However, once we began to write originals we felt we needed an original name. We all loved the word Reckless and decided to keep it and replaced the word Life with something larger than life: Love.
You were born in 2001, a decade back. Which changes have you experienced during this period? We noticed a big evolution from the eps to the first album.
Plenty. We’ve had two drummers before Hessu and of course we’ve developed as musicians n songwriters. Moreover, we’ve also consciously tried to develope our own original sound which would honor our idols the best possible way without copying anything.
Olliver, in 2008 you were introduced as the new singer of Crashdiet –and correct me if I’m wrong- you continued in Reckless Love, you were in both bands at once. What made you decide for Reckless Love?
Yes you’re right on the money. It was a rushed decision from both parties, me n crashdiet. In the end I just never found the creative connection with those guys. They’re a band with a sad story n that’s how they’re supposed to sound. When you think of me, I’m a party driven kinda dude who cant stop smilin onstage. It was weird. I couldnt fake being angry. I want joyful n energetic Merry Metal n that’s exactly what Reckless Love is… n in my humble opinion Reckless Love’s got better songs n better musicians as well. Haha
After four eps and endless touring, Universal got an eye on you. Considering you are the second glam rock band in a decade to sign to a major, how did all happen?
Universal Music actually offered us a deal already before I joined CD, however, we were not ready for it yet. We felt we didn’t have h5 enough songs n it just didnt feel right. We wanted to wait. We did n we landed a publishing deal, which was our ticket alongside with catchy songs to land a record deal eventually. In between we developed our craft to perfection n wrote most of our debut album.
Taking a look at the video of One More Time –from your first album- it seems like you had lots of fun. Where did you get the ideas from?
All of our ideas draw from our own lives. Pepe writes most of the songs n I write the lyrics. All the songs have elements of truth in them. Sure I might exaggerate sometimes a little, but that’s how you tell a good story!!
According to the stereotype, Scandinavians are extremely cold, but if we are to believe your lyrics, you are more often in a rut that Whitesnake in their whole discography. Are you atypical Scandinavians? Should daughters be locked up when you are in town?
Scandinavian coldness and darkness is just a well designed marketing trick. Sure the winter is cold n dark but in darkness there are so many great ways to have fun with. Furthermore, when the winter’s gone comes along the most intense summer than anywhere!! The sun does not set at all. You can get a tan during midnight!! Top it off with the long tall blonde scandinavian girls and you got yourself the ultimate california… Can you imagine someone who’d really be angry here?! Me neither!
In Finland –your home country- you are doing great, with many scheduled concerts and nominations for awards. How are going your plans of domination of the rest of the world? You toured UK, Japan, and Italy last year. Are you going to tour Europe in 2012?
Yes. We will tour the world and we are going to start this year already. From SPAIN!! We are also doing great in the UK and that’s where we have a tour booked in November/December. Later this year we’ll tour Italy and next year it’s time for the rest of the world. Check out our website www.RecklessLove.com to keep up with the tour.
Olliver, as member of Crashdiet you toured Spain. Which are your memories of that tour? What’s your opinion of Spanish audience? How do you think they would welcome Reckless Love?
My memories are really great. I loved touring in Spain. Spanish fans are really fanatic and crazy!! I think Spain will love Reckless Love because spanish people love goodtimes and love to party… so do we, and we provide the best soundtrack for it!!
You are releasing your new album in September. Listening to your new single, Hot, it seems like you are going to follow the steps of your debut. Is that so or have you new influences flowing, apart from Def Leppard, Van Halen, Poison, and KISS? Is there any song that will leave us breathless?
I think the whole album will leave us all breathless, I’ve been listening to the rough mixes and I’m blown away myself… this album will be h5er than the 1st, the songs are all very very catchy and the whole concept is very ambitious. We really wanted to freshen up the whole 80’s glam sound and bring it more to date. I think we succeeded in that too. We brought in influences straight from modern pop songs, just like the metal bands did in the eighties. You can hear little echoes of Lady Gaga and even Katy Perry in there! However, the album really sounds like Reckless Love and there are even songs that are heavier than any on the debut. It’s gonna be pure Merry Metal.
Looking at social media we noticed an increasing interest about the band. Which message would you like to deliver to Spanish rockers? Could you tell it in Finnish, too?
