Los suecos The Theander Expression se han colado en todas las listas de los mejores discos de AOR de 2013. Hace unas semanas nos visitaba en acústico Christian Hedgren, uno de los cantantes, y hoy hablamos con su líder y compositor, Andrée Theander, que nos desvela incógnitas del disco y hacia dónde avanzarán en 2014. La gira española y publicación de edición japonesa no están descartadas. Hedgren nos dejó un mensaje de agradecimiento para los asistentes al concierto.
Te llamas Andrée Theander y tu banda se llama The Theander Expression. ¿Qué quiere expresar Theander?
Mi música. =)
El álbum se llama ‘Strange Nostalgia’. ¿Es Andrée Theander, cómo músico, una persona nostálgica? ¿Te ayuda la nostalgia a escribir mejores canciones? ¿Hay algún tipo de nostalgia con la que te sientas a gusto?
Realmente ‘Strange Nostalgia’ no se refiere en absoluto a nada musical. Sé que alguna gente parece interpretar el título del disco como una especie de nostalgia musical, como que quiero que vuelvan los 80,j aja, y no tengo ninguna clase de problemas al respecto, pero no es ese el caso. La canción Strange Nostalgia trata sobre mis propios sentimientos sobre el pasado que siempre parece seguro y que no sabemos mucho sobre el futuro, lo que es a la vez aterrador y fascinante.
Tenías 10 años la primera vez que cogiste una guitarra y después hiciste muchos cursos, incluso te fuiste a Los Ángeles. ¿Piensas que irte a Los Ángeles y aprender mucha técnica te ha ayudado a desarrollarte como músico?
Tenía la técnica desde los 17 o así. Era entonces cuando solía practicar la técnica. Desde entonces he estado trabajando más en otros retos musicales. Los meses en LA en absoluto tuvieron efecto sobre mi forma de tocar, pero, en otros sentidos, fue una gran experiencia.
‘Strange Nostalgia’ se ha situado en España en la lista de los mejores discos de AOR de 2013. ¿Por qué crees que la gente se siente tan próxima a él?
¿Por qué es bueno? ;) No, no lo sé. Sólo estoy haciendo lo mío… Pero me hace muy feliz que a la gente le guste, ¡me hace sentir muy bien!
Has hecho una alineación de músicos impresionante para la grabación, pero, en concreto, me gustaría que me comentaras un poco sobre Furin, Edman, y Hedgren. ¿Cómo acabaron subiendo al carro? ¿Cuál es la magia que cada uno añade al proyecto? ¿Cómo se mezclan?
Todos ellos fueron mi primera opción, por lo que soy muy afortunado de tenerlos a todo a bordo. Simplemente los contacté, les toqué mi música y les gustó y quisieron unirse. Piense que Furin tiene un groove perfecto en su estilo de tocar que encaja perfectamente en mi música y es un tío muy majo. Edman y Hedgren son dos vocalistas fantásticos, ambos, y creo que tengo lo que se llamaría lo mejor de dos mundos con un icono tremendo como Göran y un gran principiante como yo en Christian.

Comentaste en una entrevista que para este disco te han influido Toto, Journey, Work Of Art y Street Talk. ¿De qué manera te han influido cada uno de ellos?
¿Lo dije? ¡Ja, ja, vale! ;) De hecho me influyen un montón de bandas y de músicos. Los que has mencionado se mueven bastante en el mismo estilo y quizá es como suena bastante mi álbum, supongo. Puedo darte cuatro nuevas bandas que me han influido: Queensryche, Dream Theater, Europe y Mr. Big. ;D ¡Y héroes de la guitarra como Steve Vai y Joe Satriani!
‘Mr Know It All’ es una de las canciones favoritas de la audiencia española. ¿Hay alguna persona real que te haya inspirado esta canción? ¿Cómo nació?
No trata de una persona específica si no sobre la que gente que le dice a los otros cómo deben vivir sus vidas y les aconsejan sobre cosas sobre las que no saben una mierda.
A uno de tus más devotos fans aquí le gustaría saber si vas a publicar una edición japonesa del disco y si es así, si va a incluir temas extras. ¿Tocarías en Japón?
Quizá lo hagamos, pero tengo que hablar sobre la discográfica. Pero si lo hacemos, sí que incluirá más temas. ¡Y me encantaría tocar en Japón! ¡Que me dejen telonear a Mr Big, que sé que allí son muy populares!;D
Has publicado tu disco con Avenue of Allies. ¿Cómo ha sucedido esto? ¿Cómo decidisteis acabar trabajando juntos?
Me ofrecieron el mejor trato y son un gran sello para el AOR.
No hace mucho, el 29 de noviembre, tuvimos a Christian en España, tocando un set acústico, interpretando algunas canciones del disco. Nos confesó, muy emocionado, que no esperaba semejante recepción. ¿Te ha comentado algo con respecto a su visita a España? ¿Has visto algún vídeo?
¡Sí, me lo ha comentado! He visto algunos vídeos. Estoy seguro de que lo hizo muy bien.

¡Espero que sí! Estamos trabajando en ello.

The Swedish The Theander Expression appear in all the lists of the best AOR records of 2013. Some weeks ago played unplugged Christian Hedgren, one of the singers, and today we speak to their leader and writer, Andrée Theander, that fill us in details about the making of the record and their plans in 2014. The Spanish tour and the Japanese edition of the álbum are a strong possibility.Hedgren left us a message thanking the audience in the concert.
Your name is Andrée Theander and the name of the band is The Theander Expression. What does Theander want to express?
My music. =)
The name of the álbum is ‘Strange Nostalgia’. Is Andrée Theander, as a musician, a nostalgic person? Does nostalgia help to write better lyrics? Is there any kind of nostalgia you feel comfortable with?
In fact, ‘Strange Nostalgia’ does not refer to any musical stuff at all. I know that some people seem to interpret the album title as some musical nostalgia, wanting the 80’s to come back or so, haha, and I don’t have any problems with that, but that’s not the case really. The song Strange Nostalgia is about my own feelings about the past that always feel safe and that we don’t know much about the future, wich can be both scary and fascinating..
You first picked up a guitar at 10 and later did several courses,even went to Los Angeles. Do you think that going to Los Angeles and learning loads of technique helped you to develope as a musician?
I’ve had the technique pretty much since the age of 17 or so. That was when I always used to practice technique. Thereafter I’ve been working more on other musical challenges. The months in LA did not affect my playing technique at all, but it was a good experience in other ways.
‘Strange Nostalgia’ has been placed in Spain in the charts of the best AOR albums of 2013. Why do you think people feels so close to it?
Because it’s good? ;) No, I don’t know. I’m just doing my thing… But I’m very happy people like it, it feels great!
You gathered an impressive line up of musicians for the recording, but, precisely, I’d like you to give me some feedback about Furin, Edman, and Hedgren. How did they end hoping into the wagon? What’s the magic that each of them add to the Project? How do they mingle?
They were all my first choice so I’m very lucky to have them all on board. I just contacted them, played them my stuff and they liked it and wanted to join.I think Furin has that perfect groove in his style of playing that fits my music perfectly and he’s a really cool guy. Edman and Hedgren are just fantastic vocalists, both of them, and I think I got what I call the best of two worlds with both a huge musical role model in Göran and a great newcomer like myself in Christian.

You commented in an interview that this álbum has been influenced by Toto, Journey, Work Of Art and Street Talk. In which way has influenced you each of them?
I did? Haha, okay! ;) In fact I’m influenced by a lot of different bands and musicians. The ones you mentioned now are all pretty much in the same style and maybe that’s pretty much how my own album sounds, I guess. I can give you four new bands I’ve been influnced by this time: Queensryche, Dream Theater, Europe and Mr. Big. ;D And of course guitar heroes like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani!
‘Mr Know It All’ is one of the favourite songs of the Spanish audience. Is there any real person that has inspired you this song? How did it came to life?
It’s not about one specific person, but about people who tell others how to live their lives and giving advice about stuff they don’t know shit about.
One of your most devoted fans here wants to know if you are releasing a Japanese edition of the álbum and if so, if it’s going to include bonus tracks. Would you like to play in Japan?
Maybe we will, but I have to talk with the label about that. But if so, yes. And I would love to play in Japan! Let me open up for Mr. Big, I know they’re pretty popular over there! ;D
You’ve released the álbum with Avenue of Allies. How did that come so? How did you to work together?
They gave me the best deal and they’re a good label for AOR.
Not long ago, on 29th November, we had Christian in an accoustic gig in Spain, performing some of the songs of the álbum. He confessed, deeply moved, that he didn’t expect such a warm welcome. Has he told you about his visit to Spain? Have you seen any videos?
Yes, he has told me! I’ve seen some. I’m sure he did a great performance.

The álbum was out this May and you’ve done some accoustics in Sweden. Are you touring soon? Would that include the rest of Europe?
I really hope so! We’re working on that.
