A los suecos Wigelius, con su disco ‘Reinventions’, se les consideró una de las grandes revelaciones y uno de los mejores discos de 2012.
El 21 de septiembre nos visitan en Madrid en la sala Charada para descargar su AOR, de la mano de la promotora Live4Aor, concierto en el que prometen liarla pero bien. Entrevistamos a su cantante, Anders Wigelius, que nos habló de su disco, de lo que podemos esperar en el concierto, sobre chicas y sobre diversión.
Os llamais Wigelius, y hay dos hermanos que se apellidan Wigelius en la banda, ¿por qué elegísteis este nombre? ¿Podría ser porque los hermanos son mandones y el resto no podía oponerse a ello?
(Se ríe) No, siento decir que es todo lo contrario. Cogimos el nombre de Erik y el mío porque suena genial. Todos en el grupo mandan, por lo que no hay locos dictadores.
¿Qué tipo de proyecto teníais en mente cuando os juntásteis? ¿Qué aporta cada chico a la ecuación y cómo lo mezcláis?
Éramos cuatro chicos que queríamos hacer algo real y propio. Todos trabajamos como músicos a tiempo completo y pasamos los días tocando música escrita por otros por lo que básicamente seguimos nuestros corazones y formamos Wigelius. Quizá por eso es por lo que nos los pasamos tan bien mientras que creamos y tocamos.

Anders te descubrieron en 2011 mientras que participabas en el concurso True Talent en la televisión sueca y cantabas ‘Don’t Stop Believin» de Journey. ¿Qué recuerdos guardas de esa actuación? ¿Y qué recuerdos tienes del concurso y de tu actuación final?
Cuando miro hacia atrás realmente no puedo decir que recuerde especialmente nada del show. Todo sucedió tan deprisa… y tienes que estar concentrado para tu aparición televisiva, por lo que los minutos y las horas pasaron rápidamente. Estoy contento de poder desarrollar una carrera haciendo lo que más amo: ¡Wigelius!
Has confesado que eres fan de Richard Marx y de Foreigner. ¿Qué te aportan estos músicos? ¿Piensas que podemos encontrar influencias de ellos en vuestro debut?
Tengo montones de influencias diferentes pero en cuanto a escribir música AOR, gente como Richard Marx, Foreigner, Toto y Whitesnake son los que realmente me inspiran.Ciertamente puedes escuchar mucha inspiración viniendo de ese lado en Reinventions.
Se os ha comparado con Work Of Art. ¿Qué opinión tenéis al respecto? ¿Es otra de vuestras influencias?
¡Todos amamos la música de Work Of Art! Y ser comparados con ellos es halagador. En el nuevo disco que estamos grabando ahora mismo usamos más nuestro propio estilo. Es triste decir que no tuvimos tiempo para aportarlo en ‘Reinventions’.
El productor de Issa, Daniel Flores, ha producido el disco y Harry Hess (ex Harem Scarem) lo ha masterizado. ¿Cómo ha sido la grabación trabajando con ellos? ¿Qué pensáis que potenciaron de vuestro talento?
(Riéndose) Ha sido muy rápida. Ha sido un privilegio trabajar con estos chicos. Son muy naturales y fáciles de tratar, por lo que no hubo problemas. Si hubiera algo que nos hubiera gustado cambiar, hubiese sido haber tenido un poco más de tiempo para las canciones, para la producción y para el management.
En vuestro disco hay dos canciones llamadas como dos canciones de Motley Crue –’Piece Of The Action’ y ‘Too Young To Fall In Love’-. ¿Es por casualidad o es una especie de homenaje a esta banda?
Realmente es solo una coincidencia. Sin embargo soy súper fan de Motley Crue.
Precisamente mi canción favorita es ‘Too Young To Fall In Love’. ¿Cómo fue gestado ese tema?
Me alegra mucho escuchar eso. De hecho, es una de mis favoritas también. La escribí en 2007, cuando estaba estudiando en la Academia de Compositores de Estocolmo (realmente en la misma clase que Jake Svensson –el guitarrista-, pero él estudiaba Músico de Estudio). La misión que me encomendaron mis profesores aquel día fue escribir una canción del estilo de Def Leppard. Creo que salió bien y con un título guay también.
Vuestro disco se llama ‘Reinventions.’ ¿Qué queréis expresar sobre los contenidos con ese nombre?
Siento decir que no hay una historia especial detrás del nombre del disco. Es simplemente algo que surgió en el estudio. Sólo un nombre guay y somos bastante jóvenes para tocar AOR por lo que tiene sentido de una manera extraña.

Mencionáis a dos mujeres en el disco, Angeline y Cassandra. Si tuviérais que escoger a una de ellas, ¿a cuál elegiríais? ¿Cómo describiríais la personalidad de cada una de ellas?
¡Tengo que escoger a Angeline porque Cassandra es una zorra! Ja ja ja.
‘Angeline’ es una canción más matadora y un gran tema de apertura mientras que Cassandra tiene un carácter personal para mí. Y quiero a las chicas tanto como a la música, por lo que, ¿por qué no nombrar las canciones con nombres de bellas mujeres?
También mencionáis que os gusta divertiros. ¿Podemos imaginaros tirando televisiones por la ventana de un hotel, por ejemplo, o sois angelitos?
Si pudieras hacerlo tú misma, ¿no lo harías? Ja ja ja. No, realmente somos unos chicos muy majos a los que les gusta irse de fiesta, beber y pasárselo bien. No nos metemos en líos como peleas, chocar coches y cosas así. Cuando Wigelius llega a la ciudad, ¡siempre hay una gran fiesta!
También tocas la guitarra y el teclado y has escrito canciones para otras bandas. ¿Con qué bandas has colaborado y cómo fue la experiencia?
Erik y yo trabajamos como compositores cuando no giramos. Hemos escrito un montón de números 1 y tenemos como 20 álbumes de oro y de platino a nuestro nombre. Sobre todo escribimos música pop y mainstream para bandas de chicos, no AOR. Hemos escrito una canción para un artista en tu país llamado Abraham Mateo.
Vais a tocar en España el 21 de septiembre. ¿Qué podemos esperar de este concierto? ¿Y qué opináis de las chicas españolas?
¡El concierto va a ser maravilloso! ¡Estamos deseosos de venir a vuestro país! Con un poco de suerte mucha gente de España estará allí, especialmente las chicas guapas ;)

Swedish Wigelius, with their record ‘Reinventions‘, were considered one of the best newcomers and one of the best records of 2012.
On 21 st September they visit us in Madrid in the venue Charada to shoot us with their AOR, concert organized by the promoter’s agency Live4Aor, and in which they promise the hell of a party. We interviewed their singer, Anders Wigelius, that talked to us about the record, about what we can expect of the concert, about girls, and about fun.
You are named Wigelius, and you have two Wigelius brothers in the band, why do you choose this name? Could it be that the brothers are bossy and the rest couldn’t oppose to it?
Haha! No I’m sorry to say that it is the total opposite! We took mine and Eriks last name because it sounds awesome. Everybody in the band is basically in charge so there’s no crazy dictators.
What kind of project did you have in mind when you came together? What do every of the guys add to the equation and how do you mix it?
We were 4 guys that wanted to make something real and own. We all work as fulltime musicians and fill up our days playing music written by others so we just basically followed our hearts and formed Wigelius. Maybe that’s why we have so much fun while we create & play.

Anders you were discovered in 2011 while entering the contest True Talent in the Swedish television and you sang ‘Don’t Stop Believin» of Journey. What memories do you have of that performance? And which memories do you have of the contest and of your final performance?
When I look back I actually can’t say that I specially remember anything from the TV-Show. Everything happened so fast and you had to get your mind together for your tv appearance so the minutes and hours just passed by. I’m just glad that I could carry on a career doing what I love the most… Wigelius!!
You declared yourself fan of Richard Marx and Foreigner. What do these musicians bring you? Do you think we can find influences of them in your debut?
I have a lot of different influences but when it comes to write AOR-Music people like Richard Marx, Foreigner, Toto and Whitesnake really speaks out to me. You can certainly hear a lot of inspiration from that side on ‘Reinventions’.
You have been compared to Work Of Art. What do you think of that? Is it another of your influences?
We all in the band love Work Of Art’s» music! And being compared to them is flattering. On the new album that we are recording for the moment we do have more of «our own» style. Sad to say we actually didn’t have the time to bring that out on ‘Reinventions’.
The producer of Issa, Daniel Flores, has produced the album and Harry Hess (ex Harem Scarem) has mastered it. What’s the recording been like working with them? What do you think they have boosted from your talent?
Fast…. haha! It was a privilege to work with those guys. They are really down to earth and easy going so there was no problems. If there was something that we wish we could do different it would be to have a little more time for the songs, production and arrangement.
In your album there are two songs named like two songs of Motley Crue –’Piece Of The Action’ and ‘Too Young To Fall In Love’-. Is that by chance or a kind of homage to the band??
That’s actually just a coincidence. I’m a hardcore Motley Crue fan though!
Precisely my personal favourite it’s Too Young To Fall In Love. How did this song come to life?
Im very glad to hear that. Actually that´s one of my favourites too. I wrote that song back in 2007 when I was studying Songwriter Academ» in Stockholm. (Actually in the same class as Jake Svensson –the guitarist-, but he was studying Studio Musician) My mission from my teachers that day was to write a Def Leppard tune. I think it turned out great… cool title as well.
Your album it’s called ‘Reinventions’. What do you want to express about the contents with that name?
I’m sad to say that it’s not a special story about the album’s name. It was just something that we came up with in the studio. Just a cool name and we are in pretty young age for playing AOR so it actually made some kind of weird sense.

You name two women in the album, Angeline and Cassandra. If you were to choose one of them, which would you choose? How would you describe the personality of each of them??
I have to choose Angeline because Cassandra was a bitch haha! Angeline is more a killer tune and great opening track while Cassandra has a personal matter to me. And I love girls as much as I love music so why not name songs after beautiful women?
TYou mention you are also about having fun. Can we picture you throwing televisions through the window of a hotel, for example, or are you angels?
If you had the chance to do it yourself, wouldn’t you?! Haha! No, actually we are nice guys that just loves to party, drinking and have fun. We are not into any kind of troubles when it comes to fights, car crashes and stuff. When Wigelius comes to town, there´s always a big party going on!
You also play the guitars and keyboards and have written songs for other bands. With which bands have you collaborated with and how was the experience like?
Me and Erik is working as songwriters when were not touring. We have written allot of #1 hits and have about 20 gold & platinum albums in our names. Mostly we write Pop & Mainstream songs for boybands and not AOR. We actually have written a song for an artist in your country called Abraham Mateo.
You are playing in Spain on 21st September. What can we expect from your show? And what do you think of the Spanish girls?
The show is gonna be amazing! We are really looking forward coming to your country!. Hopefully everybody in Spain will be there especially the beautiful chicas ;)
