“Boston tienen el diseño perfecto para describir el tipo de AOR que creamos o recreamos” Hank Erix
Nos cautivaron con los primeros acordes del single ‘Hold On‘, allá por 2010, y desde entonces no hemos regresado de la luna. Sólo se mantiene en la formación el cantante Hank Erix, pero el espíritu y la calidad siguen alcanzando las estrellas. Tocarán en el festival HRH AOR de Reino Unido, junto a Night Ranger, y después se acercarán a España para cantarnos al oído bonitos temas de amor y “vengarse” de la juerga que no se corrieron en 2011. Erix nos abrió su alma y pidió a los amantes del género que lo apoyen activamente para garantizar su supervivencia.
A H.E.A.T les apasionan los aviones y vosotros parecéis sentir debilidad por los cohetes. ¿Acaso vosotros aspiráis a más que a quedaros sobre la Tierra? ¿Para vosotros qué representan los cohetes?
Hay algo de otro mundo en la música AOR y la visión de Houston era ser una banda de AOR auténtica con el mismo sonido que el de nuestros héroes de principios de los 80. Para mí es algo casi religioso, es la actitud de lo desconocido, de la esperanza y de estirarse para tocar las estrellas.
La portada de vuestro primer disco ─Houston─ parecía un tributo a Boston. ¿Seguís apasionándoos por Boston? ¿Sobre qué trata la portada de II? ¿Cuál es el concepto?
Boston nos inspiró mucho pero no podría decir que nadie en la banda sea un gran fan. Simplemente tienen el diseño perfecto para describir el tipo de AOR que que creamos o que recreamos ja ja. La portada de Houston II se refiere al sentimiento de “voy de camino” que sientes fuertemente en nuestra música.

El primer single de vuestro nuevo disco se llama I’m Coming Home. ¿de dónde regresábais? ¿Pensáis que la vida nómada de los músicos puede haceros sentir a veces como si no tuviérais hogar?
Escribimos I’m coming home justo cuando acabábamos de volver de girar con nuestro primer disco. Habíamos girado con Crashdiet, habíamos tocado en el Sweden Rock y en el festival de Download, habíamos teloneado a Cinderella, habíamos tocado por primera vez en el Firefest y habíamos visitado Madrid. Nos sentíamos como héroes que volvían a casa y solamente queríamos escribir un himno sobre eso.
Vuestro batería y uno de los fundadores de la banda, Freddie Allen, abandonó hace no mucho, y pasasteis de ser un dúo a una banda de cinco personas. ¿Qué podéis contarnos acerca de esos cambios? ¿Cómo altera eso a la forma en la que funcionáis como banda?
Nunca antes fuimos una banda, éramos un dúo que básicamente se convirtió en un trío (con Ricky Delin). Cuando Freddie se marchó, sentí que no podríamos volver a ser un dúo, por lo que sentí que era el momento adecuado para reunir la banda que Houston merecía. Hasta ahora los cambios son positivos, todos opinamos y estamos en esto juntos.
Tommy Denander colaboró en las guitarras de este último disco. ¿Cómo lo conseguisteis? ¿De dónde salió la idea y qué ideas aportasteis cada uno de vosotros?
Conocimos a Tommy a través de nuestro antiguo productor y miembro de banda Ricky Delin y desde el principio se comportaba como un miembro de la banda, nos convertimos en amigos muy próximos. La mayoría de las canciones las escribieron el fundador del grupo Freddie Allen y Ricky Delin, mientras que las que yo escribí eran más heavies y no encajaban. ¡Las escucharéis en mi próximo disco en solitario!

Este disco tiene un sonido más duro. ¿Qué queríais conseguir, en el sentido de composición, cuando comenzasteis Houston y qué queréis conseguir ahora.
No puedes hacer el mismo disco una y otra vez. Creo que Houston fue un golpe de suerte, podía haber salido mal pero teníamos fé y la reflejamos. Ahora teníamos más claro lo que queríamos hacer en II y estamos más próximos el uno al otro y nos sentimos más cómodos. Para el próximo, nos acercaremos más a un moderno sonido pop que a un sonido más duro como hacen todas las bandas. Coincidimos en que es la mejor forma para nosotros para crecer y la mejor de preservar nuestro sonido a lo largo de los años y de la historia.
I’m Coming Home es vuestro primer vídeo. ¿Por qué esperásteis tanto para grabar vuestro primer vídeo? ¿Hay algún otro vídeo de II en camino? ¿Cuál diríais que son los elementos de Houston o de su estilo que deberían aparecer en cada vídeo?
En verdad, es nuestro segundo vídeo, grabamos uno en 2011, para Truth Slips. El próximo será para otro tema de II, y se grabará a principios de 2015. No estoy muy seguro de los elementos o del estilo, simplemente hacemos lo que nos apetece con ayuda de un productor.
Habéis tocado en festivales como Firefest, Download, y Sweden Rock. ¿Vamos a veros pronto en alguno de estos festivales u en otros? Por otra parte, ¿estáis preparando alguna gira británica o sueca?
Este pasado verano tocamos por primera vez en Alemania, en el festival Rock Of Ages. En marzo tocaremos en el Hard Rock Hell AOR con Night Ranger y esperamos conseguir más fechas y giras. ¡Pídenos en tu ciudad!
Acabáis de anunciar vuestra segunda visita a España en los últimos años ─la primera fue en el Rockfest, en 2011─. ¿Qué expectativas tenéis de este concierto? ¿Qué cambios vamos a percibir? ¿Qué concierto váis a hacer?
¡Voy a vengarme esta vez! Lo hicimos bien en 2011 pero no pudimos irnos de fiesta con los locales, esta vez vamos a pasárnoslo muy bien y tocaremos el set list más largo que jamás hayamos tocado y también tocaremos material que nunca hemos tocado antes, cariño, por lo que vamos a mimaros.

¿Hacia dónde se dirige Houston? ¿Qué os gustaría conseguir en el futuro y qué tipo de música os gustaría hacer? ¿Alguna idea sobre cómo será el próximo disco?
Como he dicho antes, nos encaminamos hacia un pop moderno para ampliar la base de fans y hacerlo de verdad. Somos mejores que nunca y ¡es ahora o nunca! Presentaremos un extracto del nuevo disco en el primer cuarto de 2015, ¡espero que os guste!

Si os gusta el Aor, el pop, y/o la música melódica, deberíais apoyar a las bandas que están trabajando tan duramente ─y sabéis a qué bandas me refiero─¡seguramente conocéis a más que nosotros! “Boston have the perfect artwork to describe the kind of AOR we are creating or recreating”. Hank Erix
They stole our hearts with the first chords of the single Hold On, back in 2010, and since then we are still in the moon. Just singer Hank Erix remains, but the spirit and the skills keep on reaching the stars. They’ll play HRH AOR festival in Great Britain, with Night Ranger, and next thing they are coming to Spain to sing to our ears beautiful love songs and to take revenge for the binge they skipped in 2011. Erix opened us his soul and requested the genre lovers to support it actively to guarantee its survival.
H.E.A.T has a certain something for planes and you seem to have a certain something for space ships. Is that you aim higher than staying on Earth? What do space ships mean for you?
There’s just something about outer space in AOR music, the vision for Houston was to be an authentic AOR band with the same sound as our heroes from the earlie 80’s. To me it’s almost something religious about it, the unknown, hope and the ‘reach for the stars’ attitude.
The cover of your first album ─Houston─ seemed a tribute to Boston. Do you still feel so deeply about Boston? What would you say the cover of II is about? Which is the concept?
We were just very inspired of Boston but I can’t say that anyone in the band are big fans though, they just have to perfect artwork to describe the kind of AOR we are creating or recreating haha. The cover of II is more of a ‘I’m on my way’ feeling that you feel strongly in our music.
The first single of your new album is titled I’m Coming Home. Where were you returning from? Do you think that the gypsy life of musicians can sometimes make you feel homeless?
I’m coming home was written right when we came back from all our touring from the first album. We toured with Crashdiet, played Sweden rock and Download festival, we supported Cinderella, we played Firefest and came to Madrid. We felt like homecoming heroes and simply wanted an anthem for that.
Your drummer and one of the founders of the band, Freddie Allen, left not long ago and from a two piece you’ve turned to a five piece band. What can you tell us about these changes? How does that change the way you function as a band?
We were never a band before, we were a duo that became a trio. When Freddie quit I felt that we couldn’t go back to a duo so I felt the time was right to find the band that Houston deserved. The changes are so far only positive, we all get a say in anything and we’re all in this together now.
Tommy Denander collaborated on the guitars on this last album. How did you make it happen? How did the idea come out and which ideas did every of you add?
We got to know Tommy through our old producer and former band member Ricky Delin and from the very beginning he was like a member of the band, we became dear friends. Songs were written mostly by band founder Freddie Allen and Ricky Delin, while the songs I wrote had a heavier edge to it that didnt quite fit, you will hear them on my upcoming solo album!
This album has a harder sound. What did you wanted to achieve, in the sense of writing music, when you started Houston and what do you want to achieve now?
You can’t always do the same album over and over again, I think Houston selftitled was kind of a lucky shot, it could easily have turned out badly but we had faith and we delivered. We all know more what we wanted to do on II and we are closer to each other and more comfortable. For our next album we’ll be going for a more modern pop sound than a heavier rock sound like most other bands do. We all agreed on that must be the best way for us to grow and the best to preserve our sound through the years and history.
I’m Coming Home is your first video. Why did you waited so long for shooting your first video? Is there any video in the way,for II? Which would you say it’s the Houston’s elements or style to appear in every shooting?
It’s actually our second video, we recorded a video for Truth Slips in 2011. Our next video is for a song on our new album II which will be done early 2015. I’m not sure about the elements or style we just go with what we feel like and together with a producer we create the videos.
You’ve played festivals like Firefest, Download, and Sweden Rock. Are we seeing you in any of this or in others festivals soon? On the other hand, is there any British tour or Swedish tour on the making?
We were in Germany for the first time this summer and played Rock of Ages festival, in March we are playing hard rock hell AOR with Night Ranger and we hope to get more dates and tours, demand us in your local city!
You just announced your second visit to Spain in the last years ─the first one was in Rockfest, 2011─. Which are your expectations about this show? Which are the changes we are going to notice? What show are you going to deliver?
I’m getting revenge this time! We did a great show in 2011 but I didn’t get to party with the locals, this time will be one hell of a party and the longest set-list we’ve ever played and we will play material we’ve never done, too, love, so you’re in for a treat!
Where is Houston addressing to? What would you like to achieve in the future and what kind of music would you like to be doing? Any ideas about the next album?
As i said earlier we will aim for a more modern pop sound to be able to get a greater fan base and do this for real, we are better than ever and it’s now or never! A glimpse a new album will be presented in the first quarter of 2015, hope you like it!
