Hasta 2012, el insinuante vocalista Nils Molin y el gigante rubio a la guitarra Love Magnusson tamborileaban sobre su pupitre a la espera de que sonara la campana para tomar sus tragos de whisky y dar una lección de rock sobre la tarima de la clase de la que sólo era alumnos. Ya no: con ‘Renatus‘, cuyo single se estrena el lunes 17, rompen el cascarón de su huevo de dragón y renacen como maestros.
Molin aprovechó el recreo para recrearnos con su carisma de chico malo y de una de las mejores voces de su generación y explicarnos, como grupo, qué materias se mantienen y cuáles se caen del temario.
Se comenta que os llamáis Dynazty por vuestra pasión por los egipcios. ¿Qué os fascina de los egipcios? ¿Aspirais a convertiros en faraones del rock?
Nils: La idea es establecer una dinastía sueca de heavy metal que dure miles de años, jajajja. No, básicamente queríamos tener un nombre corto y poderoso.
‘Renatus’ es el nombre de vuestro cuarto album. Renatus era un escritor del Imperio Romano que escribió Epitoma rei militaris, un libro sobre el arte de la guerra, y autor de la cita “si vis pacem, para bellum” (si quieres la paz, preparate para la guerra). ¿Son Dynazty guerreros? Si en vuestro disco anterior érais sultanes del pecado, ¿cuál es el mensaje que queréis transmitir con el nuevo? ¿Qué armas usareis para ello?
Nils: El nombre, en sí mismo, significa “renacimiento” o “renacer”. Este nuevo disco es, de muchas maneras, un renacimiento y quisimos amplificar esto con el título de mismo. Todas las letras giran en torno al concepto del cambio, de diversas formas. Un cambio que ha sido, es, y será, etc. Todo se relaciona con el concepto de renacimiento.
“Ahora somos exactamente quienes queremos ser y controlamos nuestro destino”
Vuestro primer disco se llamaba ‘Bring The Thunder’ y el segundo, ‘Knock You Down’. Los siguientes discos tienen nombres más suaves; sin embargo, vuestro sonido es más pesado, sobre todo después de haber añadido un segundo guitarrista. ¿Decidisteis sorprender a la gente con una seducción más dirigida al cerebro que al cuerpo?
Nils: Para ser brutalmente honesto contigo, creo que los títulos de esos álbumes eran bastante juveniles, jaja. Esta vez queríamos noquear a la gente con nuestra música y no convencerles a la fuerza por el titulo del disco ,jaja. Queríamos hacer un disco que fuera nosotros al 100% y que representara lo que somos ahora. Por eso decidimos producir el disco y no trabajar con otros compositores. Supongo que podrías decir que ahora aspiramos a hablar al cuerpo y al cerebro.
Vuestras canciones exudan adrenalina pero también tenéis baladas muy tiernas, pero igual de efectivas. ¿De dónde os viene la inspiración para cada una de ellas y cómo es vuestro proceso creativo?
Nils: El proceso creativo ha sido diferente con cada álbum. Sultans Of Sin se escribió muy rápidamente y eso era algo que no queríamos hacer ahora. Nos tomamos más tiempo y creo que el esfuerzo mereció la pena. Me inspiro de diferentes fuentes: puede ser viendo una buena película, escuchando buena música o mirando por la ventana, jaja.
Para ‘Sultans Of Sin’ rodasteis vuestro primer video. ¿Por qué esperasteis hasta el tercero para grabar un video? ¿En qué se diferencia del que habéis grabado para ‘Starlight’?
Nils: Para el primer disco no teníamos presupuesto para grabarlo y para el segundo nos pareció que ya teníamos uno con la actuación de This Is My Life en el Melodifestivalen. Ahora, realmente, tenemos dos videos para Starlight: uno, el normal, que se publicara primero y otro, el no censurado y loco que se publicará en algún momento del futuro.
El año pasado hicisteis grandes cambios: nuevo bajista, nuevo management, nueva discografica, os producís el disco, y distinta clase de fotos promocionales. ¿Cómo os sentís ahora? ¿Qué pensáis que os faltaba?
Nils: ¡Nos sentimos absolutamente bien! Somos exactamente quienes queremos ser y controlamos nuestro destino, por llamarlo así. Este disco se desvía musicalmente un poco de nuestros trabajos anteriores, lo que puede asustar a la gente a la que le gustaba nuestros discos anteriores, pero para mí hemos llegado a casa y Renatus es nuestro mejor trabajo hasta ahora. Creo que en este álbum hay algo para cada fan del hard rock y del heavy.
Teneis una canción llamada ‘Throne Of China’ y después girasteis por China, durante un mes. ¿Era cómodo ese trono? ¿Qué recordais de esos conciertos?
Nils: ¡Las giras por China han sido una locura! Los conciertos han sido maravillosos y seguro que volveremos. La cultura es muy diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados, lo cual divierte y asusta un poco, jajaja.
En Los Ángeles, habéis grabado discos y dado conciertos. ¿Cómo fueron esas experiencias? ¿Vais a volver pronto?
Nils: Fue fantástico, por supuesto. Un montón de músicos veinteañeros sueltos en América.¿Qué podría ir mal? Jaaja. Pienso seriamente que podríamos escribir un libro de nuestras aventuras allí. Probablemente, y espero, que volvamos pronto.
A menudo se te ha comparado con Sebastian Bach y Tony Harnell y quizá tienes un toque del instinto animal de David Coverdale. ¿Cuáles son tus influencias? También se te ha señalado como uno de los cantantes más talentosos de tu generación. ¿Cuáles son tus metas como cantante y como miembro de Dynazty?
Nils: En primer lugar, gracias por las gratas palabras, aunque al contrario de lo que la mayoría de la gente piensa, Sebastian Bach y Tony Harnell nunca me han inspirado. David Coverdale, por el contrario, sí que me ha inspirado mucho. Amo su trabajo desde Deep Purple hasta ahora. Un cantante único. Mis mayores influencias como cantante podrían ir de Rob Halford, a Bruce Dickinson y a Ronnie James Dio. Mi meta como cantante es convertirme en el mejor cantante que pueda. Retar a mi voz y seguir desarrollándola.
Participasteis en Melodifestivalen con Land Of Broken Dreams y perdisteis ante Topcats. Suecia ganó Eurovisión ese año. ¿Qué pasó por tu cerebro cuando oíste que no pasabais a la siguiente fase y que hubiera significado ir a Eurivisión?
Nils: Creo que me sentí sobre todo feliz de que se acabara, jaja. Según pienso, Eurovision no fue nunca el lugar adecuado para nosotros y mirado desde la distancia me alegro de que no llegáramos mas lejos.
Reemplazaste en directo a Kenny Leckremo en HEAT cuando estuvo enfermo. ¿Cómo fueron aquellos conciertos? ¿Qué tienen de cierto los rumores de que se te ofreció ser el cantante? ¿Hay alguna posibilidad de que toquéis juntos, como en el pasado?
Nils: ¡Fue muy divertido!¡Me aprendía las canciones en el coche, camino del concierto, por lo que siempre fue un gran reto para mí, jaja! Los chicos de HEAT son grandes amigos y siempre es una pasada salir con ellos. Hace mucho que nos conocemos y seria muy guay tocar juntos o algo así XD
Habéis venido dos veces una España, una como teloneros y otra como cabeza de cartel, y en ambas ocasiones habéis enmudecido a la audiencia. ¿Qué tiene vuestros conciertos que mojan las bragas de todos? ¿Qué recordáis del último tour? ¿Cuándo volvéis?
Nils: Creo que el hecho de que nos entreguemos en el escenario se refleja también en la audiencia. España es siempre un maravilloso pais donde tocar y queremos volver cuanto antes. ¡De cabeza a por unas fechas para este año!
En marzo tocáis en el festival HRH AOR, en Reino Unido. ¿Vamos a veros en más festivales este año? ¿Quizá en el Sweden Rock?
Nils: Desde luego.¡Estaremos en la carretera todo lo que podamos, esforzándonos al máximo y promocionando nuestro nuevo álbum! Siempre esperamos tocar en el Sweden Rock pero desafortunadamente no creo que pueda ser este año.
Ahora viene el momento de dirigiros a nuestra audiencia.¿Qué os gustaría decirles para que todos en España se mueran de hambre por vuestro amor?
Nils: ¡No os perdáis nuestro nuevo álbum Renatus, que sale en marzo! ¡Creo que os va a encantar lo que oigáis! ¡Y pronto volveremos a España para rockear con vosotros, gente maravillosa, de nuevo! ¡Hasta entonces, paz!

Until 2012, the suggestive vocalist Nils Molin and the giant blonde guitarist Love Magnusson drummed with their fingers over the desk waiting for the bell to take their shots of whisky and teach a lesson of rock over the platform of the classroom where they were just pupils. Not anymore: with Renatus, which single is released on Monday 17 th February, they break the dragon eggshell and reborn as masters.
Molin seized the break to amuse us with his charisma of bad boy and of one of the best voices of his generation and tell us which subjects will make it to the next year and which leave the syllabus of Dynazty.
Rumour has it that you were named Dynazty after your passion for Egyptians. What do fascinate you from Egyptians? Do you aim to become the pharaons of rock?
Nils: The idea is to establish a Swedish heavy metal Dynasty that will last for thousands of years, haha. No, we just wanted to have a short and powerful name basically.
Renatus is the name of your fourth album. Renatus was a writer of the Roman Empire who wrote Epitoma rei militaris, a book about the art of war, and author of the quote “si vis pacem, para bellum” (if you want peace, prepare the war). Are Dynazty warriors? If in the previous record you were the Sultans Of Sin, what’s the message you want to deliver with the new one? Which are the weapons you use for that?
Nils: The name itself means “rebirth” or “to be reborn”. This new album is in many ways us being somewhat reborn and we wanted to amplify this with the album title. All the lyrics on the album deals with the concept of change in various forms. Change that has been, is, will be and should be etc. It all ties in with the concept of rebirth.

Your first album was called Bring The Thunder and the second one, Knock You Down. The next albums have softer names; still, your sound went heavier, mostly after the adding up of a second guitarist. Did you decide to shock people with a seduction more addressed to the brains than to the body than before?
Nils: To be brutally honest with you I think that those album titles are rather juvenile, haha. This time around we wanted to “knock people down” with our music and not through forced convincing via an album title, hehe. We really wanted to make an album that is 100% us and can represent who we are right now. That is why we decided to produce the album ourselves and not work with outside writers. I guess you could say that we are aiming to speak to both the body and the brain.
Your songs ooze adrenaline but you also have heart melting ballads, both the same effective. Where do you get the inspiration for every of them and how’s your writing process?
Nils: The writing process has been different with every album. “Sultans of sin” was written very quickly. That was something we did not want to do this time. We took more time with this one and I think the effort really paid off. I get inspiration to write from very different sources. Could be me watching a good movie, listening to good music or just staring out the window, haha.
For Sultans Of Sin you filmed your first video. Why did you wait until the third album for having a video? How different is that video for the one you have just filmed for Starlight?
Nils: For the first album we just didn’t have the budget to do a video and for the second album we felt that we already had a video with the “This is my life” performance in Melodifestivalen. Now we actually have two videos for ‘Starlight’. One “normal” music video that will be released first and one uncensored and absolutely crazy video that will be released sometime in the future.
Last year you made a major change: new bassist, new management, new record company, producing the album yourselves, and a different type of promotional pictures. How does it feel like now? What did you think you were lacking?
Nils: It feels absolutely great! We are exactly where we want to be right now and we have full control over our own destiny, so to speak. This album will musically deviate a bit from our previous work which might scare people who liked our earlier albums, but to me at least we have hit home finally. And “Renatus” is our best work to date. I think there’s something for every hard rock/heavy metal fan on this album.
You have a song called Throne Of China and later you managed to tour China for a month. How comfortable was that throne? Which are your memories of those shows?
Nils: The tours in China has been absolutely crazy! The shows have been fantastic and we will definitely go there again. The culture is very different from what we are used to which is both fun and a little scary, haha.
You’ve recorded albums and have played live in Los Angeles. How were those experiences like? Are you coming back there soon?
Nils: It was great of course. A bunch of 20 year old musicians unleashed in America. What could possibly go wrong, haha! I seriously think that we could write a whole book about our adventures over there. We will probably get back there again pretty soon I hope.
Nils has been often compared to Sebastian Bach and Tony Harnell and maybe even has some touch of the animal instinct of David Coverdale. Which are his influences? He has also been pointed out as one of the most talented singers of his generation. Which are his goals as a singer and as a member of Dynazty?
Nils: First, thanks for the kind words. Although unlike what most people think, Sebastian Bach and Tony Harnell have never been big inspirations for me. David Coverdale on the other hand is a big inspiration. I love his work all the way from Deep Purple ‘til now. Very unique singer. My biggest influences as far as singers go would probably be Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson and Ronnie James Dio! My goal as a singer is to become as good of a singer as I could possibly be. To challenge my voice and to keep developing it.
You entered Melodifestivalen with Land Of Broken Dreams and lost in the competition against Topcats. Sweden won Eurovision that year. What was happening in Nils brain when he heard they were not going to the next phase and what would have meant for you going to Eurovision?
Nils: I think I was mostly glad that the whole thing was over, haha. The Eurovision song contest was in my opinion never the right place for us and in hindsight I’m very glad we never made it any further.
Nils replaced live Kenny Leckremo in HEAT while he was sick. How were those concerts like? How true are the rumours that he was offered the frontman position in the band? Is there any possibility of HEAT and Dynazty playing together, as in the past?
Nils: It was a lot of fun! I had to learn the songs in the car on the way to the gig so it was also a big challenge for me, haha! The H.E.A.T guys are great friends and it’s always a blast hanging out together. We’ve known each other for a long time and it would be really cool to do some shows together or something like that.
You’ve been twice in Spain, once as supporters and the other time as head, and both times you left the audiences open mouthed. What do the concerts of Dynazty have that wet the pantys of everyone? Which are your memories of the last tour? And when are you coming back?
Nils: I think the reason that we truly give it our all on stage reflects on the audience as well. Spain is always a fantastic country to play in and we want to come back ASAP. Heads up for some dates this year!
This March, you are playing on HRH AOR festival on UK. Are we seeing you in more festivals this year? Maybe in the Sweden Rock?
Nils: Definetely! We will be out on the road as much as possible this year playing our asses off and promoting our new album! We always hope to play at Sweden Rock but unfortunately I don’t think that’s gonna be possible this year.
